the Space Shuttle Commander John W Young and Captain Robert L Crippen you go forward this morning in a daring enterprise and you take the hopes and prayers of all Americans with you You go in the hand of God and draw on the courage of life Our countryman and poet William Cullen Bryant said America is where mankind throws off its last fetters With your exploits we loosen one more Who he said shall place a limit to the giant s strength or curb his swiftness in the forward race Through you today we all feel as giants once again Once again we feel the surge of pride that comes from knowing we are the first and we are the best and we are so because we are free For all Americans Nancy and I thank you and the 50 000 others who have worked to make this day possible As you hurtle from Earth in a craft unlike any other ever constructed you will do so in a feat of American technology and American will May God bless you and may God bring you safely home to us again 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

sure we can go on Friday Boston Globe 4 9 81 Columbia prior to launch Originally scheduled to be launched on April 10 STS 1 was delayed because of several problems including malfunctioning fuel cells and computers The shuttle contains five computers four of the computers are used simultaneously during launch and re entry with the fifth being used as a backup The fifth computer is also used while in orbit All four of the launch re entry computers must agree in their responses If there are any discrepancies the fifth computer will be used as the backup The delay in the first attempt at launching STS 1 was caused by a delay of 40 milliseconds when the number five computer was scheduled to come on line to support the other four onboard computers While waiting for the countdown to resume the astronauts were allowed a snack Young joked I just want you guys to know that we only delayed the launch so we could get our burritos on time Young after aborted launch attempt Don t worry guys on Star Trek we almost never got it on the first take either William Shatner New York Post 4 11 81

the two solid rocket boosters and the three main engines of the orbiter ignited in a fierce explosion of light and smoke was the silence I will never forget the noiseless beauty of those few moments Even as the behemouth jumped off the launch pad in a violent burst of fire and smoke singeing the grass for a mile around I heard nothing Then like rolling thunder the roar came
