  • The End: Death in Seven Colours | Korsakow
knew it would allow me to work with video and also I could be a bit looser with the connections I also realized that my idea of defined paths could be executed with the markup system in Korsakow I also think that the work changed a bit as I learned how Korsakow worked and the work does what I want it to do while also using the structure of Korsakow MS What were the creative and or technical challenges you faced in making the film eg the affordances and limitations and frustrations of working with Korsakow versus other platforms or programming languages DC It did take a while to figure out the idea of the linking structure Korsakow is slightly different from Hypertext where a single word in one of the SNU links to another chapter The links are more about Unit to Unit connections Also since there are seven distinct chapters I had to figure out a keyword structure that would sustain this I also had to figure out how to treat and label the keywords The audience doesn t see this but it does have an impact on the way the work functions MS Are you happy with the outcome Anything you would have done differently DC I am quite happy with the work I had an opportunity to exhibit it at the Electronic Literature Organization Conference in Bergen and was happy with the response I think those who spent time with the work start to quickly understand the way the links are made and start to understand the stories MS Who was is your audience Where has it played so far where will it be showing How might the work be contributing to a larger discourse about through interactive based art DC As in my previous work for the Internet I am hoping the work will find an audience through the Internet itself I find that it s very useful that anyone can stumble on to it on the Web or track it down through the aggregation systems I think the audience would be people who like experimental digital work net art electronic literature I think there would be some people who might have seen some of my previous work who would understand how this piece fits with those other pieces My work has been seen in media art festivals through on line exhibitions has been presented at conferences and even included in courses about digital media so in many ways this is an audience I want to continue to engage I do make work that I hope is accessible and even entertaining so I do hope it can gain the widest possible audience for this kind of work In terms of the larger discourse I have been paying attention to the critical discourse around emerging media through ideas of hypertext the database interactive narrative and so on I hope this work provides something for those thinking about the future of these forms MS Any advice for

  • Racing Home – A Dual Lens on Posthumous Cinema | Korsakow
part of Korsakow s own DNA Hoffman believes that we have become different beings with the computer that the individual is immersed in the world of images in a different way The messiness of celluloid is transposed into Korsakow facilitating the feeling of sifting through an archive Re visiting Racing Home created a space for Hoffman to reflect on Marian s original intentions of making the film The interactive program solved Hoffman s dilemma of trying to pin down and make a fixed ordering of the film from the rough cut and substantial archive she left behind The shifting juxtapositions which Korsakow offers allows for a work that continually suggests new connections and relationships Hoffman added some sequences from the film he made in response to Marian s death What These Ashes Wanted 2001 so that Racing Home could stand as a document of her life Racing Home starts with a dream sequence and then moves into a kind of concrete space of home and then back into dream In Korsakow there are more choices You can always kinda loop back into the home life section or the Windsor section says Hoffman There s a sense that Korsakow can be like a dream because you move from one thing into another thing without it necessarily making logical sense The images and texts the reiterations and reformulations in some ways keep an open dialogue with the work and with Marian and conjure new meaning with each new viewing That s the nice thing about Korsakow you juxtapose things that typically wouldn t go together and through that you find new meaning Hoffman considers that each segment of the film makes up the ingredients of a life which connect both the exterior and interior of one s self and one s life Engaging with the film might allow one to reflect on an experience in the same way as it might while sitting down in the morning with your partner and lover talking about your dream and how it relates to something that happened the day before Hoffman is also currently working with others at the Independent Imaging Retreat aka Film Farm on developing non toxic ways of developing and colouring film through organic processes Interview by Myriam Rafla Phil Hoffman is an award winning experimental filmmaker who has created an inspirational space for artists at the Independent Imaging Retreat aka Film Farm a residential filmmaking program for the production of experimental film works He is an Associate professor in the Department of Film at York University in Toronto Canada See for example Kin Gagnon Monika 2009 Posthumous Cinema On Archiving Charles Gagnon s R69 in Charles Gagnon 4 Films Montreal Spectral Films About Matt Co director of Korsakow development filmmaker View all posts by Matt Updates Simplifying downloads hello Yosemite bye bye compression The End Death in Seven Colours English Search Recent Posts The End Death in Seven Colours Racing Home A Dual Lens on Posthumous Cinema Updates Simplifying downloads hello
