  • Korsakow Artist Profiles: ‘A Cartography of Iconic Memory’ by Morgan Rhys Tams | Korsakow
kids Half the population of that town is children And I thought well this would be such a great opportunity Iceland being a modern European nation and totally wired Even out there on the coast everyone has a smartphone Isn t that an interesting experience in and of itself You are completely cut off from the world yet you are completely networked MRT That s something I think about everyday The proliferation of the screen and the smartphone in the hands of young people is I hesitate to say in crisis but I think from an educational standpoint it s something that does need to be more aggressively addressed than it is now But that s a bit tangential I got into the idea of using QR codes and teaching myself how to manipulate those and how to make that work I produced all the animation and taught myself how to make a smartphone friendly app not really an app it s a website that pops up when you scan the QR codes There was a facility in the next town over about 40 minutes away that provided all the laser cutting Those are metal 6 inch by 5 inch aluminum plates that have been laser engraved with the QR codes And with permission from the Mayor who was really excited about the project and really engaged with the arts community in that town I was able to mount these on public structures That s quite an incredible process and journey MRT Yeah it was an odd one I guess you really only go as far as you want to go and so I had these ideas I m so glad that I took those risks and delved into technologies I didn t know before and all those kinds of things It also seems that the combination of the landscape your presence there the time you took to explore called for you to find ways of engaging with it and having other people share that experience As you say sometimes it literally takes wandering about and getting lost within the space MRT Well I think that s where the map idea comes through Once someone in Skagaströnd scans the QR code they see the animation but then if they scroll down they see the map The map is like a provocation or suggestion of where to go or what to do next But their experience of walking from point A to point B is going to be completely different from my experience walking from A to B or anyone else s experience which also becomes part of the art work itself Exactly Which brings us to something like Korsakow How were you introduced to it MRT I wrote my Master s thesis on interactive documentary as it relates to education My Master s is in Art Education For me that was just an excuse to get involved in doing some interactive doc stuff So playing with Zeega and a few of those platforms I stumbled across Korsakow in somebody s writing There s enough of it out there so that it gets little mentions Maybe it was through Sandra Gaudenzi University of Bristol I may have found it through Adrian Miles Because of the education connection these things pop up I m not sure where I got turned onto it but it was through some initial research And then as part of my thesis I made a small project called Two Horses about the politics surrounding a bridge in my home town of Victoria which is being torn down There is obviously a connection there to Florian Thalhofer s Korsakow film Planet Galata and I absolutely love Istanbul too So that film resonated with me very very strongly Two Horses was a small piece but it was a way for me to cut my teeth with the software and also acknowledge the work that Florian had done on Planet Galata which I think is fantastic And once Cartography was mounted in the interactive live space it seemed like a natural fit to move the images into Korsakow MRT For me Cartography was always going to be two fold I wanted to use my time in Iceland to explore Korsakow further and start a new project the idea being that the average person is not going to travel to Northern Iceland to experience the project Korsakow does a very good job of replicating the experience in the best possible way for someone sitting in front of their computer screen I found that was a natural fit and a great way to represent the experience Would you consider remounting a Cartography project elsewhere MRT That s an interesting point keeping it as an ongoing thing throughout my career or until I get sick of it Yeah making it international If you think about it it could be quite exciting You could have these hidden pieces globally or you can open it up in the spirit of a lot of web based filmmaking make it open source and encourage a whole community to start doing these And in any major city you visit you can have these hidden QR projects It s so playful It s a different way to experience open spaces whether they be urban or other MRT And it doesn t have to be animation based you can nest any kind of story you want As a political tool it could be really interesting as well There s all kinds of angles for it You are an active part in the work That s the teacher in me Artist as facilitator or something like that I am facilitating an activity or an experience Do you want to elaborate on that MRT Yeah sure For example Korsakow films being active So you are not just sitting and watching a documentary about a bridge in Istanbul but you are an active participant in that project or in the viewing process and so

passionate I am inspired By this risk The risk is in not knowing in advance what will be what will form and what shape your work will become It is a thinking environment And coincidentally why Korsakow or its future avatars provides the best current model for the essay film in interactive contexts Which courses are you teaching using the Korsakow system AM The subject is called Integrated Media One It gets the one because there are two subjects and it is where we put the network specific things we want media students to learn I m currently using Integrated Media One to expose students to less formal but deeply informed ways of making using available tools of making and then to stretch them in relation to multilinear video and network specific ways of thinking and working I ve written out in way too much detail a lot of the curriculum here How are students adapting to non linear storytelling Is it a challenging experience for them A liberating one What are some of the observations unexpected experiences that they encounter during and following the making of a Korsakow film AM A very small number are liberated A very small number find it too challenging and so produce litanies of why it is all a waste of time The majority fall somewhere in between begin to get it and sort of enjoy the liberties it enables The majority only realize the importance of it after they graduate The biggest step is that I try to steer them away from fiction storytelling That s because there isn t enough time in a semester to do that well That multilinear storytelling remains an area dominated by bad theoretical work and snake oil sales people who are well intentioned but don t have much idea That it is very very hard to do well and politically aesthetically and ethically I m more interested in work that shows us ways to engage with the world as peers agents and lets us see notice and discover what is already there waiting rather than teaching and building yet another layer that becomes my imposition of my will upon the world through a story casting lighting carting stuff around Are students primarily making database documentary films or are other styles genres of films emerging in their works AM At the moment we make small observational works They are primarily non narrative so more description than story The outstanding ones shoot stuff they notice and are interested in We view the material then do a second level of noticing to see what has been filmed what works best and that usually becomes the theme that they film to A third layer of noticing happens when this material is then curated through simple and minimal keywords in Korsakow It s about poetic noticing of the world Do you teach any theory when you teach with the Korsakow System If so what sort of material do you refer to AM
