  • The Case for an Estuary - Lakes Need Water
and bream in the wide waters of the lake when the sea went up When this was the case the cod went up stream as they do not like salt water examination of Robert Strachan a fisherman who said cod fishing was carried on at present while mullet will be caught next month Cod are caught with a hook and line A small mesh net had to be tried with which to catch tukerie for bait He fished near Milang for the most part but when the salt water came in he went to the other end of the lake As early as 1902 the River Murray League was lobbying the government for barrages to keep the Lakes fresh all year round While at the same time the Royal Commission on the Fishing Industry Lakes fishers expressed concern about the adverse effects on their industry by the creating of freshwater lakes behind the barrages Olsen 1991 Some locals still remember what life was like before the barrages Their stories have been told in these interviews Excerpt from an interview with the late Bert Lundstrom There was all salt water in Goolwa in those days We used to go down with a little net down opposite the station Goolwa railway station then we d walk around and get a feed of mullet You could fish off the wharf there was a lot of garfish around Or this excerpt from an interview with Richard Spencer We did a lot of swimming actually out from the wharf There were a couple of walkways with ladies and mens bathing sheds situated out along this walkway and we used to swim there In the early days before the barrage was built it was all clear salt water and it was beautiful swimming And this excerpt from the interview with Jim Marsh Barrage Superintendent Goolwa As the South Australian Government in the meantime had long foreseen or been made aware of the need for some sort of a structure at the Murray Mouth They came up with a scheme designed it and submitted a proposal and it was approved Goes back a long way the early settlers the country around Mundoo Island Hindmarsh Island was settled in about 1840 1841 It was mainly cattle grazing because of the ephemeral nature of the Murray and the very flat terrain it was a constant battle of forces between the sea and the river You ve got fresh water coming down it pushes the sea water out and everything s hunky dory but if you get a dry year and the river doesn t flow then the tides push the sea water in and as in 1915 it was a bad drought year the sea water penetrated up to Mannum they were catching Mullet at Mannum and there was a sighting of a shark at Tailem Bend and a dolphin at Murray Bridge History Post Barrages 1940 s to now This report the Murray River Barrages Environmental Flows Report

  • Lower Lakes Facts - Lakes Need Water
large percentage of the known Acid Sulphate Soil sites would not be exposed if the Lower Lakes were maintained at sea level by opening the barrages During a drought the current management plan is to allow the Lower Lakes to dry down to 1 5 AHD or below sea level and keep the barrages shut Then use bioremediation techniques to control the ASS that would not have formed in the first place if the barrages were open and seawater allowed to mix with the freshwater creating an estuary A map of acid sulphate sites and the bathymetry of the Lower Lakes Fact The Lower Lakes as a freshwater ecosystem has been in decline for over a decade The ecology of the Lower Lakes and the Coorong has been suffering biodiversity loss for decades with loss of habitat invasive fish species such as carp and declining native fish species The presence of the barrages causes an abrupt change in the water environment and reduced tidal range and is believed to be one of the major factors contributing to habitat degradation ref MBDC Fact There is not enough freshwater during an extended drought to sustain the artificial freshwater regime of the Lower

  • Vision Statement - Lakes Need Water
GL day seawater intrudes into the Lower Lakes depending on tides wind and weather The Lakes are not destroyed by this in fact it helps with the native fish congolli spawning With vision planning and management a vibrant estuarine ecosystem could be reestablished in the Lower Lakes which would be more sustainable especially during drought than the current artificial freshwater system Communities and farmers around the Lower Lakes are now supplied with piped mains water unlike the early settlers who became dependent upon the Lakes being fresh year round The Ramsar listing can be changed to an estuarine classification Conservation of Murray Darling Basin resources Restoring the Lower Lakes to an estuary reduces an unnatural demand on the River Murray to always keep the lakes full of exclusively fresh water This frees up precious freshwater during drought for other wetlands of the Murray Darling system that lack a natural estuarine history The Lower Lakes when full hold 2200 GL of water and evaporate approximately 950 GL of freshwater each year Socio Economic Benefits Coastal lakes and estuaries hold tourism appeal in stark contrast to dry lake beds The communities surrounding the Lower Lakes depend on water not only for crops and livestock but water to support tourism and boating Planting the lake bed as was done to combat acid sulphate soil acidification during the drought does nothing for tourism and boating Opening the barrages would restore the size of the estuary restore the tidal prism and allow storm flows to scour the Murray Mouth making it easier to keep open than the current static system Additional efforts to stabilize the Murray Mouth to make it navigable similar to what has been done at Lakes Entrance could be a boon to boating and tourism The Peel Harvey Estuary and Dawesville Channel

plants and waterbirds Use of the barrage network has significantly reduced the flow of water into and out of the river mouth under tidal influence Because of this the Murray Mouth approaches closure more frequently than would have occurred naturally Flow management can result in abrupt changes to salinity levels and overall water quality in the Coorong estuary which disrupts the natural reproductive cycles and movement patterns of many fish species The net result of these factors and other external impacts on the fishery is that there are varied and acute pressures placed on fish stocks and the ecosystem that supports them particularly during periods of drought This report River Murray Barrages Environmental Flows from the MDBC in 2000 analyzes the condition of the Lower Lakes Before the barrages were built in 1940 scientists agree that the Lower Lakes were part of a vast estuarine ecosystem connected with the Coorong As Charles Sturt in 1830 approached Lake Alexandrina at Pomanda Point he wrote in his journal Thus far the waters of the lake had continued sweet but on filling a can when we were abreast of this point it was found that they were quite unpalatable to say the least of them The transition from fresh to salt water was almost immediate and it was fortunate we made the discovery in sufficient time to prevent our losing ground But as it was we filled our casks and stood on without for a moment altering our course Goolwa Barrages and Lower Lakes South Australia Goolwa Barrages and Lower Lakes South Australia Barrages in red separating freshwater from seawater since 1940 A very interesting historical interview in 1999 with Jim Marsh Barrage Superintendent Goolwa Mr Marsh says As the South Australian Government in the meantime had long foreseen or been made aware
