Tweet Character Sow and Reap Posted on July 5 2011 by Marcus Brown JD Leave a Comment You just won one million dollars What would you do with it When we were younger my dad would periodically ask my brother and I that question and all too often to my immature mind For me steps one through five would rarely change church gift bills gifts savings investing something special for myself More importantly however since the likelihood of receiving it was little to none I got tired of having to answer it over and over again I didn t see the point Only once my mature mind developed did I realize the question was less a hypothetical taunt to amuse my dad but rather practical teaching learning moments By posing this question and critiquing my answer he was actually teaching us about life As a parent he was imparting his knowledge and experience in hopes that one day it would prepare us for that lottery win or more realistically whatever amount we would accumulate by punching that timecard at work every day over the course of our lifetime He would say the rich and wealthy don t stay that way because they decide to be so on the day they come into their riches or wealth understand he was not only referring to people with material things they have prepared themselves for it well in advance When they had little to nothing whether money time or responsibility they learned how to live and manage it as if it were equal to one million dollars By the time they do make it big their principles for living and managing things don t change only the amount they possess at that time That is also how character is developed in relationships by professional reputation in financial discipline through social or environmental responsibility in a commitment to service and spiritual maturity It is first taught then practiced and finally realized Life is complicated If parents of today still wish their children to be the hope of tomorrow we must not be reluctant to take a consistent and active role in developing the character of those children more talking more listening more teaching more loving So what would you do if you won 40 000 today This commentary stemmed from an article I just read in the LA Times about Allan Guei a graduating high school athlete from Compton California who had to answer that very question recently When he did it was remarkable and unexpected That act is what highlights his character Allan gave it ALL to the runners up seven of his classmates at Compton High School even though they were already receiving a monetary prize for being finalists What Even as there are many to applauded in the article along with Mr Guei I have to highlight a couple we read nothing about his parents We don t know anything about them but their influence shines undeniably through the actions of

dispensing the quantity of anything But you know A lil dab il do ya is the perfect reference for a lot of things in life If we could only master our desire for consuming stockpiling or pack ratting things even emotional baggage the world might be a simpler more peaceful place Now tell me how can you apply this to your life Me I can just tell you by looking around my house I ve got more stuff than I need or care to deal with on any given day especially when my five year old decides to pull it out all at once So why do I have it I ll tell you why because I failed to remember A lil dab il do ya But I m not the only one with that problem am I My resolve in the face of relentless advertising a wife to please or puppy dog eyes of a child broke down way too many times And now we all realize it as we have to clean repair or move this stuff I hate moving Even when we come to our senses and jettison bags full of this stuff to the local shelters and donation drop offs the moment is short due to the realization that it didn t make a real dent at all That s because we still kept too many things claiming some notion of the sentimentality of what remains What s worse The fact that somehow those same things surprisingly lose their sentimentalism too soon after that thought A rap artist aptly entitled his song Mo Money Mo Problems but the song could have just as appropriately been Mo Stuff Mo Problems because after all the money wouldn t be the problem if we were giving more and accumulating less right Aside from the material things do you clutter your relationships with stuff Accumulating unhealthy characteristics or engaging in destructive behaviors in order to perpetrate some false self image I can tell you our youth do it if for no other reason than to fit in somewhere And how do you think they get that idea We model it for them every day But less is more Just think the less time we spend trying to be somebody else the more time we have to perfect who we actually are We ve got to simplify our personal lives Why you say Have you ever seen an episode of that television show Hoarders Well you know the lives we live in our hearts and minds can get like that too if we let it stockpiling grudges resentments regrets failures loss hurts even unexpressed needs or desires Less is more How about giving some of that up trading some of that off transforming some of that into something new More thank yous I m sorrys I forgive yous I love yous more listening patience sharing consideration ensures profoundly less stress and strife and significantly more joy peace hope inspiration strength to

placed in groups with children who are lower functioning How do I know that this will not be the case at your agency We utilize our assessment to examine abilities and goals for potential participants We find that some functioning variability in groups can be a positive motivation for change However too much variability is counterproductive for all parties involved Our groups are tailored to meet the unique needs of high functioning children and teens that often find it difficult to locate groups with similar functioning peers If my child is high functioning does that mean this group will be a good fit The ultimate goal of our program is to help our participants learn how to make and maintain positive interactions and relationships that are needed to be successful in all areas of life i e school home community While we do not establish and maintain friendships with everyone we meet the same is true for our children The initial assessment serves as an opportunity to determine appropriateness based on group structure The first 3 sessions of our group serve as a good assessment for peer group dynamics It is of upmost importance to us that children and teens are placed in groups where they can be successful We maintain communication with families to determine if another group at our agency or an outside agency may be a more appropriate fit I am looking for a group where my child will get to interact with children with their same diagnosis Is this the case with your group Our groups are designed to place children and teens based on their age ability and social skills goals As diagnoses present differently among individuals we do not use this as a basis for group placement There may be children with a psychological diagnosis and others with a medical condition and still others with neither The commonality in age ability interpersonal skills and social goals is what we use to place children and teens in groups My child has ADHD social awkwardness medical condition etc and does not have an Autism Spectrum Disorder All of the groups I find are for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Is this is the same with your agency Our groups are for children and teens with skills deficits We do not place individuals in groups based on diagnosis see question above but rather based on abilities and complementary Butterfly Bootcamp Plan goals Therefore our groups can have children with a variety of psychological and or medical conditions Members of our groups are considered high functioning They often have a unique struggle in that many adults and peers do not understand at first glance that they have a problem Therefore others tend to place high and unattainable social expectations on them causing frustration to both parties Do the children teens in your groups all have the same program goals No Their goals do not have to be the same to be in the same group However if the
