    Garden for a special Fidos After 5 Did I mention VCU Oh yes We know you are out of class looking for some fun and adventure We d like to invite all Virginia Commonwealth University students faculty and staff to come visit Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden for FREE Monday through Friday of this week September 21 25 9 a m to 8 p m Just bring your VCU ID card and we ll welcome you in Explore our blooms butterflies vistas quiet escapes or go for a walk through some of our wooded trails behind Bloemendaal House Shhh It s kind of a secret but fall is one of the best times to visit the Garden The weather is perfect Butterflies LIVE is open til 4 45 p m daily and there is so much in bloom The Rose Garden in particular is looking fabulous What a romantic place to take a date or just bring a group of friends Or maybe you d like to connect with nature in our meditation garden Medical and pharmacy students did you know we have a really extensive Healing Garden filled with information about medicinal plants Especially if you haven t visited Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden before you are in for a treat You can even come listen to some of your professors as they perform at the Garden tonight Monday September 21 The Garcia Jazz Trio features Director of Jazz Studies and Associate Professor Antonio Garcia trombone vocals percussion VCU Jazz Studies Program alumni John Conley guitar and Brian Sulser bass and special guest Associate professor Counselor Education at VCU Mary Hermann Garcia vocals Visit our website to see the full schedule of bands Then again on Tuesday night September 22 it s VCU Jazz alumnus and Prof Marcus Tenney tenor sax

    of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators in May Earlier this month President Obama launched his Million Pollinator Garden Challenge too We are happy to report that we ve signed on as a Pollinator Garden Our regular visitors and Garden Members know that Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is a great place to spot monarch butterflies in summer and early fall and it s a great time to spot all kinds of pollinators bees butterflies moths bats and birds at any time of year Even as a home gardener you can join as a pollinator garden post a photo and be added to the map A monarch butterfly visiting the Central Garden in late summer Conservatory in background Pollinator gardens should use plants that provide nectar and pollen sources provide a water source be situated in sunny areas with wind breaks create large pollinator targets of native or non invasive plants establish continuous bloom throughout the growing season eliminate or minimize the impact of pesticides Join the campaign to reach 1 million food and habitat sites for pollinators Anyone can help If you d like to learn more about pollinators visiting our indoor butterflies exhibit Butterflies LIVE is a great way to learn Our butterfly curators can talk to you about different kinds of butterflies and why they are so important to our ecosystem Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden s Children s Garden is also a Monarch Watch Certified Monarch Waystation This means that we provide milkweed nectar and shelter for monarchs in an effort to conserve and protect them About Jonah Holland Jonah Holland is PR Marketing Coordinator at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden specializing in social media She s been known to go for a walk and come back completely inspired to write a blog post on her newest found adventure You

  • Mother's Day at Lewis Ginter
    best friend with the addition of her son who was just 6 weeks old While not yet able to play with the other children he seemed quite content to snooze to the sounds of the band Traditions Our little girls are growing up Having reached the very big girl age of 7 the girls weren t interested in dancing to the music this year much to their moms chagrin Instead they wanted to sit and chat find secret hideaways and practice cartwheels on the lawn Luckily my little guy was very excited to dance with Mom for several songs but then he s always been a boogie man One tradition the kids always love involves smelling the heavenly scents of the gorgeous peonies in Grace Arents Garden This year my daughter showed her little brother how it was done and he thought it was pretty neat Secret Hideaways This year the ongoing request from the girls was to show them secret hideaways and cool lesser known places in the Garden since Mommy works here I did my best to show them many of the really intriguing places but they also managed to find some of their own special spots Sad Good Byes Every year it gets harder to leave The girls want more time together and more time in the Garden Even though the Garden was getting ready to close the girls asked if they could please stay longer and explore one more part of the Garden Thankfully we don t have to wait until next Mother s Day to bring our families back for a play date Even still there is always something extra special about Mother s Day in the Garden Dads like to spend a day in the Garden with family too Join us for Father s
