  • The Beauty of Seasons Changing - Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
    I knew it it was fall with cool crisp weather I knew fall called for beautiful foliage and cool air but I didn t realize we d also have fall blooms When people ask How do you like interning at the Garden I reply with enthusiasm mentioning how it is not only a learning experience but a chance to enjoy nature in a way I never would especially now that the seasons are changing Soon I will be doing some season changing of my own I m not sure what s next but in December I will be graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Public Relations and returning home to Silver Spring Md Like in my personal life the seasons at the Garden are changing quickly and I have to make sure I cherish the moment Reflecting on previous years at VCU It seems like fall slips away during the time school starts in late summer and when the semester ends in winter It s like the seasons change overnight and fall is this mystery in between Interning at the Garden I am able to step back and enjoy the beauty Here are some of the beauty breaks I have taken this fall Goldenrod Solidago Beauty Berries Callicarpa found outside of the Healing Garden Narrow Leaf Sunflower Helianthus angustifolius Flagler Garden Lawn Every day I walk through the Woodland Walk I made sure I captured a moment for memories The Rose Garden terraced lawn Fall foliage just outside the Grace Arents Garden Pumpkins by the firepit in the Children s Garden What better way to end my years in Richmond than to intern at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden About Jasmine Kent Jasmine Kent is a former PR Marketing Intern You May Also Like Winter Interest Spring like

  • Gardening: Up-close Photos Bring Nature into Focus - High-tech Photography Reveals Hidden Wonders of Seeds - Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
    Llewellyn now views the great outdoors with a microcosmic perspective He photographs in layers of focus and uses high tech software that strings together the layers The final prints are enlarged sometimes up to 8 feet for even closer inspection The byproducts are illusion of size as well as visual intrigue Using this photographic technique Llewellyn has published several pictorial books including Remarkable Trees of Virginia Seeing Trees and Seeing Flowers Next in the series is a book about seed pods which he is currently photographing Money plant by Robert Llewellyn The seed pod is the most interesting part of any plant he said I watch lots of sci fi and I can t find a more alien world than seed pods Seed pod a common name for the fruit of a plant or tree is the vessel that carries and protects reproductive seeds Like whatever it is procreating the seed pod runs the gamut in size shape and structure Golden RainTree by Robert Llewellyn While the fruit of the honeysuckle is a fleshy waxy berry the dandelion s dry fruit is light and fluffy for wind dispersion Gumballs are prickly while peas are soft and edible Other seed pods resemble air foils or wings like the parachute style seed pods produced by the sycamore tree The seed pod is an amazing life form Llewellyn mused It is a future generation and it s one of the wonders of the world He has gathered quite a collection of seed pods and has photographed more than 20 000 photo frames of them Photography changes a person by getting close to things in nature he added Once you actually see them you ll never see them the same again Editor s Note This article first published in the Richmond Times Dispatch in
