  • Greeks Donate for Life Blood Drive February 28
    3 p m The Devine Nine consists of Alpha Kappa Alpha Alpha Phi Alpha Delta Sigma Theta Kappa Alpha Psi Omega Psi Phi Iota Phi Theta Phi Beta Sigma Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho Each day Mid South area hospitals transfuse approximately 300 units of blood products The Divine Nine is giving blood as a way to ensure that the area s hospitals and patients have blood when they need it The Memphis Metropolitan Pan Hellenic Council in conjunction with Lifeblood is honored to be allowed to continue its endeavor of giving back to our community with this year s blood drive said the President of the National Pan Hellenic Council Shelley Lyles Madison The blood drive was created as a way to increase the number of African American donors in the Greater Memphis area Additionally Lifeblood and the Pan Hellenic Council hope to heighten the entire community s awareness of the importance of donating blood particularly during the critical winter months when the number blood donations typically decrease but the need is still great Due to the recent winter weather the community s blood supply is critically low and Lifeblood is asking all eligible donors to help

    in the community as part of Lifeblood s 6th Annual Awards Luncheon Our volunteers are vital to ensuring a stable blood supply is available at all times for trauma centers hospitals and individuals in need said Susan Berry Buckley Lifeblood CEO And so we celebrate them today for their efforts to support Lifeblood and their fellow community members The awards luncheon kicked off with a keynote address by Chris McCulley the father of a blood recipient whose life was forever changed when there were complications during his son s Jax s birth and he needed blood transfusions Unfortunately Jax McCulley passed away less than a week after he was born The luncheon was emceed by WREG News Channel 3 s weather anchor and blood donation advocate Todd Demers and included an invocation by Reverend Katherine Bush of St Mary s Episcopal School 2014 Winners Corporate Hilton Worldwide Education University of Memphis High School Bolton High School Faith Based Bartlett Woods Church of Christ Government Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority Healthcare Saint Francis Hospital Memphis Newcomer of the Year Nestle Richard Dick Benson Community Service Award Jane Garrett Lifesaver of the Year Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Volunteer of the Year Donna

    worship Lifeblood is always looking for more community partners to host blood drives Hosting a blood drive is easy You will be paired with a Lifeblood account manager who will help you set a timeline for your blood drive and provide posters and marketing materials to help recruit donors The blood drive can either be held on a bloodmobile or as an inside set up depending on the space permitted For more information about hosting a blood drive call 901 529 6323 and ask how you can schedule a Lifeblood mobile drive Monthly Promotion Until February 28 successful donors will receive a 2015 Lifeblood Donor T shirt Donors also have the option to surrender their shirt and Lifeblood will make a donation to one of the following organizations Mid South Transplant Foundation Sickle Cell Foundation American Cancer Society Lifeblood Blood Drive Story To honor the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr Mid Southerners donated blood at the National Civil Rights Museum on King Day January 19 Individuals received admission for four to the museum for donating blood More than 60 donors gave blood at the drive making it the largest blood drive that has been held at the museum

    1933 Dr Drew served as an Instructor in Pathology at Howard University and as an Assistant in Surgery in 1936 In 1940 he received a Doctor of Science in Medicine from Columbia University Freedmen s Hospital chose Dr Drew as Professor of Surgery and Chief Surgeon Our blood bank along with others throughout the world is a testament to his work to save lives Lifeblood Salutes Black History Month Sunday

  • National Blood Donor Month Spotlight: Justin Hanson
    donate to save patient lives throughout the year Keep it up in 2015 During the month we will be spotlighting a donor each week This week you can learn about Justin Hanson I don t recall a specific reason why I first donated I just knew it was the right thing to do I have a number of friends and family who ve benefited from blood donation I know firsthand just how important blood donation is and just how life saving it can be So I think about that every single time I donate Every time I donate I mark the date for my next donation on my iPhone calendar I m pretty regimented when it comes to donating I try to donate as close to the next scheduled date as possible Simply put I make time for it I know that should I ever need a transfusion someone else has made time for me I just try and pay it forward and return that favor It s normal for a first time donor to be anxious Try and relax take a few deep breaths and it s really over before you know it For me the hardest part is
