  • Lifeblood Updates Donor Eligibility Criteria
deferral period was 60 days Donors with a history of heart problems specifically those donors who have had heart attacks or pacemaker implants will require personal physician and Lifeblood medical director approval in order to continue donating Several years ago the FDA and AABB allowed same day acceptance for donors with tattoos or piercings who meet strict criteria said Dr Laurie Sutor Lifeblood s medical director but Lifeblood maintained a more conservative deferral period In reviewing Lifeblood s clinical data I do not see any valid reason to keep deferring these donors The second change requiring written medical approval for donors with history of heart attack or pacemaker implant is intended to maintain donor safety Donors with heart muscle damage may be at increased risk of complications during a donor reaction Said Dr Sutor In the interest of their safety and continued good health the blood center s medical directors want to confirm with the donors physicians that giving blood will be safe Individuals age 17 and over 16 with written parent consent who weight at least 115 lbs and are feeling well and healthy are encouraged to help save lives by donating blood at any of Lifeblood s five
