    more mid southerners to help local patients in 2016 Blood donors are the secret superheroes in our community In 2016 Lifeblood is asking more volunteers to Find the Hero in You by making a pledge to donate blood Individuals may pledge to donate by filling out a simple form on the Lifeblood website Lifeblood org Donors who pledge will receive special communications recognition and opportunities to share news of their good deeds through special images stickers and t shirts Whole blood can be donated every 56 days and platelets every seven days Those who pledge will receive reminders and helpful information during the year to keep them on track to reach their goal Last year 27 839 local individuals donated approximately 42 000 units of red cells platelets and plasma for patient transfusion More than 63 of Lifeblood donors gave only one time If every blood donor gave just three times during the year Lifeblood could maintain a stable blood supply for patients and reduce the need to import blood from other communities Text with Lifeblood Receive appointment reminders shortage announcements ask questions and get general Lifeblood news when you text LIFEBLOOD to 444999 to opt in to Lifeblood text

  • African Americans asked to Donate Blood during Black History Month
    centers to help the community s blood supply They have a goal of 90 donations during the month The number 90 is significant because it has been 90 years since Dr Carter G Woodson initiated Negro History Week now called Black History Month to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout history said Debra Brown community relations director at Lifeblood In Memphis approximately 12 000 people a majority of which are African American suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia These patients often need blood transfusions every 21 days just to live Medical research has shown that African Americans possess rare blood traits that are found only within their ethnic population Because of that African Americans often provide the best match for other African Americans in need of blood and the need is great here in Memphis African Americans also often possess blood types O and B which are in high demand at Memphis area hospitals Successful blood donors will receive a T shirt during the month February at any Lifeblood donor center The Black History Month campaign is in partnership with the National Sickle Cell Foundation the Mid South Transplant Foundation and the National Bone Marrow Foundation To
