    were available for EEU 40th Anniversary by Julia Jun 19 2012 Our Stories Several LifeSPAN Focus People including Kari and Lupita were honored this spring at the 40th anniversary of the University of Washington s Experimental Education Unit EEU on May 12 2012 To learn more about the EEU and the history of its unique program for children with developmental disabilities check out these websites See the new website launched at the UW A New Era for Down Syndrome Listen to or read the transcript of the KUOW News Report Kids with Disabilities Thrive at Experimental Education Unit by Ann Dornfield Marilyn s Story by Julia Jun 19 2012 Our Stories Marilyn is a retired university professor who came to LifeSPAN via an invitation from her friend neighbor and former LifeSPAN board president Jean She was not particularly interested in volunteering with LifeSPAN but Jean persuaded her to come along to a network meeting anyway just to see what was going on The meeting they attended was one of the very early meetings of David s network The group was learning about David s many interests as they were sharing their own In the course of the evening s conversation Marilyn learned that she and David share an interest in organ music and the rest is history Marilyn extended an invitation and they began to attend concerts and recitals together Sometime buying whole series at Benaroya or making their way up to St Mark s Cathedral for special events They are fans of the happy hour dinner in restaurants around Marilyn s Pike Street Neighborhood and city buses which get them everywhere they need to go As they ve enjoyed the musical performances together they ve also become true friends Marilyn has had an opportunity to experience Dave s growth

  • Celebration of Hearts 2012 - LifeSPAN
    member of the LifeSPAN community who displays a personal commitment to a focus person and or the family The Julie Rowe Memorial Award was established by Mary Rowe Tappert as a way to honor an individual in the LifeSPAN community who truly embodies the goal and mission of LifeSPAN and to remember her mother Julie Rowe who embodied the philosophy of LifeSPAN as she worked to assure a good life for her daughter Anna Nominees for the award come from the LifeSPAN networks Anyone in the extended community is eligible and a winner is designated in time for an award presentation at the Celebration of Hearts event in late winter This year the clear winner was Marilyn Evans Marilyn is a retired university professor who came to LifeSPAN via an invitation from her friend neighbor and former LifeSPAN board president Jean She was not particularly interested in volunteering with LifeSPAN but Jean persuaded her to come along to a network meeting anyway just to see what was going on Read more of Marilyn s Story We are so touched by Marilyn s example of ease generosity respect and optimism Thank you Marilyn The award this year was designed by Lily who has a network of her own It was fabricated by Judith and Daniel Caldwell of Caldwell Sculpture Studios This is the third year that the Caldwells have donated the award which is cast in bronze then hand finished and colored In addition to providing a venue for the presentation of the award the Celebration of Hearts is a fundraiser for LifeSPAN This year we had many artists including professional artists donating to our silent art auction The food beverages and entertainment were also generously donated by LifeSPAN supporters We would like to thank the many contributors to the event

  • Julie, Mary, and Anna Rowe's Story - LifeSPAN
    Anna s life celebrate and because of Anna s love of music have now started singing together at the meetings Members have established great ways to correspond a wonderful newsletter that is emailed to everyone a beautiful profile of Anna on myspace where members can read about Anna s interests and a calendar to see what she is up to amongst other things and a phone reminder to help remind busy members about the next meeting Relationships have even blossomed and deepened amongst members too With this establishment of communication information and community members are more easily able to be a part of Anna s life Ideas are forming about finding musicals and activities that Anna will enjoy understanding Anna s life and ways members can be a friend There will probably be set backs along the way but I have faith that Anna s network will continue to grow thru the years because of the foundation that has been laid the relationships that have been nurtured We are indeed grateful We should all be lucky enough to have our own network that gathers regularly to celebrate our lives with relationship written by Julie Anna s Mom 11 2007 LifeSPAN Friends at Julie Rowe s Memorial Julie Rowe became unexpectedly ill and died on the 16th of December 2008 LifeSpan would like to thank Julie for her faith in our organization her example in our lives her upbeat way of living and her membership on our board during the last year of her life We miss her Julie s daughter Mary is now her family representative with LifeSPAN and her story follows How long have you been a Lifetime Member of LifeSPAN Three years What brought you to LifeSPAN Originally my Mom found out about the organization and formed the

  • A Celebration of HeARTS - LifeSPAN
    is the youth minister at Calvary Christian Assembly She is a very active member of Jerry s network who has done a great deal to create opportunities for Jerry to engage with and contribute to his community She is a great friend to him and she shows us all that indeed relationships are key to a good life Congratulations Shelly The award itself was designed by Katie who also has a LifeSPAN network It was fabricated by Judith and Dan Caldwell who create sculptures in metal and who are members of David s network They donated their work and materials Thank you friends This year the Celebrations of HeARTS was also an art auction and fund raiser More than 20 professional artists donated beautiful original artworks to support LifeSPAN and they were joined by nearly 30 enthusiastic non professionals who created a huge variety of beautiful things to admire and bid for from jewelry to artworks to note cards Everything on offer was made by hand from within our extended LifeSPAN community Laura Lagerstedt who was one of last years award winners and is a member of Sheri s network provided live music for the night It was a joyous
