  • "Caring for our Elders, Adults with Disabilities, and Each Other" - A panel discussion hosted by Highline Historical Society - LifeSPAN
    net or 206 246 6354 limited seating The story of a truly great community is how we care for our elders and loved ones with disabilities as well as for each other Did you know for example that this is the first time in history that individuals with disabilities are outliving their parents If you are facing something new and trying to figure out how to make it work you are not alone Join us for a panel discussion with experts in the field You will gain helpful hints to move forward and help write a new history of the way things are done In addition while you are visiting the venue take the opportunity to enjoy an excellent free exhibit on the 1930s and The Great Depression The exhibit is a wonderful place to entertain networks or families who are considering joining LifeSPAN The exhibit is very welcoming fully accessible and attendees can have a great time talking about their individual family histories during the 1930s There are many restaurants in the neighborhood so it would make a nice outing for families networks and friends Panelists include Judy Pigott Founder Personal Safety Nets Marla Beck Owner President Andelcare Home

    Personal Safety Nets are important for every one of us not just those of us who are living with a disability Judy Pigott knows this and has created a social enterprise and a non profit designed to bring us all to awareness and celebration of our interdependence http personalsafetynets org Bio JUDY PIGOTT co wrote Getting Ready for Life s Inevitable Changes and Challenges and the workbook Get Ready Get Started Eight years ago she turned these written ideas into a social enterprise dedicated to making the world a better place Her goal to build communities one person one family one neighborhood at a time This work has put Judy in front of more than 350 groups during these years including individuals for and non profit businesses neighborhoods organizations and forums for all ages In 2012 Personal Safety Nets transformed into a 501c 3 non profit organization The Center for Ethical Leadership rewarded Ms Pigott for her work by naming her one of the recipients of the 2011 Bill Grace Leadership Legacy Award The award identifies and celebrates Northwest individuals or groups whose vision leadership and commitment work advances the common good in local communities Personal Safety Nets is the

    their families to have a safe secure and quality future On Saturday September 21 2013 we met at Salty s Restaurant on Alki for a wonderful brunch with the members friends and families of our community to celebrate where we ve been in the past year and our hopes for the year ahead We honored Joanne O Neill of The Arc of King County for her outstanding leadership in the disabilities community as a training coordinator for Parent Trainings Housing Transition to Adult Services and Employment Kay Hirai LifeSPAN Board Vice President presents Joanne O Neill with LifeSPAN s Good Life award for 2013 We also recognized Kaasha Samuelson as the recipient of the Julie Rowe Memorial award for her outstanding contribution as a member of the LifeSPAN community in her personal commitment to her network s focus person and family LifeSPAN would like to again thank our wonderful community sponsors for this year s event Studio 904 BNY Mellon and Kitchen Plus We would also like to thank all of our guests who helped to make it a joyous and successful event If you would like to see more photos from this year s event please visit our Facebook

    a house key contact info On the reverse side it has Medical Contact Info Insurance Info In case of emergency or if I cannot speak for myself please call Contacted 1 Name Phone Contacted 2 Name Phone Contacted 3 Name Phone in other words have I actually contacted these people for permission to be on my card They know how to reach one another so I need to connect them They have info access and legal power I need to figure out how to do this I would like to ask you if you would consider being one of my three emergency contacts I would list your name and phone number on my card I would introduce you to my other two contacts and my medical contact my primary care doctor I hope and I would provide you with a bit more information about how to access critical information about me if anything ever happened I realize this is not a small request If something ever happened to me and you were the contact who got called I would be counting on you to be there for me Of course we hope that time never comes Please know that it has taken me several weeks to actually start my homework It is not easy to ask for help but I know that this is the best path for me and I believe for others Also please know that you can say No In fact in some ways it would be a relief to me to know that I can make a request without worrying that I ve intimidated someone into saying Yes reluctantly Thank you so much for considering this request With love and deep gratitude Michele p s I am blogging about my personal journey with personal safety nets
