  • Klamath Tribal Youth Training & Employment Program, Summer, 2014 - Lomakatsi Restoration ProjectLomakatsi Restoration Project
    a variety of skills in forest and watershed restoration Through positive work experience and teamwork development the Klamath Tribal Youth Training and Employment Program provides professional skills a sense of responsibility a long term community service ethic and a foundation toward future employment in the field of natural resource stewardship Lomakatsi resource staff provided hands on training and insight into career paths in natural resources ecosystem restoration science and ecology Through a competitive application process 10 local youth ages 16 24 were selected to participate in this 3 week intensive in which participants were paid 10 an hour to conduct forest and watershed restoration projects As part of the Fremont Winema Forest Restoration Stewardship Project the Klamath Tribal Youth Training and Employment Program utilized the forested landscape as an outdoor laboratory Collaborative partners of the project include the Klamath Tribes Lomakatsi Restoration Project The Nature Conservancy and the US Forest Service Under the guidance of Lomakatsi s professional workforce trainers participants implemented a series of stewardship projects in the Fremont Winema Stewardship Project on US Forest Service administered lands and adjacent private lands Lyndia Hammer Lomakatsi Restoration Ecologist is shown here demonstrating how to read tree cores in her discussion of forest ecology with youth participants Lomakatsi Executive Director Marko Bey discussed how ground crews implement prescriptions to achieve landscape scale forest restoration projects with Klamath Tribal Youth Program participants Local natural resource specialists from The Nature Conservancy the Klamath Basin Rangeland Trust and the Klamath Falls US Fish and Wildlife Service office gave guest presentations throughout the program Lomakatsi managed two youth crews this summer as part of our Youth Ecological Stewardship Training and Employment Program This provided an opportunity for youth participants of both programs to gain a more extensive experience as they traveled to a variety of

    and interns review and discuss ecological prescriptions for Hope Mountain Project Job creation workforce training and development are primary objectives of the Hope Mountain Stewardship Project and this was supported through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding During the Hope Mountain Stewardship Project Lomakatsi provided training and employment opportunities to a total of 130 forest workers from Josephine and Jackson counties Three well established forestry contractors and two timber operators participated in the program which served to create employment opportunities in one of the most economically depressed areas of Oregon while simultaneously building local contractor and workforce capacity Lomakatsi s Ecological Workforce Training Program trained a new 32 person workforce in the rural communities of Cave Junction O Brien and Takilma with both in class and hands on opportunities in stewardship forestry Intern workers participated in this 9 month training series where a wide range and diversity of skills in both the technical and labor intensive aspects of holistic ecosystem management were shared On project training sessions assisted in developing skill sets and demonstrating a workable model during project implementation on 890 acres Activities served to reduce extreme fire hazards and restore late successional forest habitats while providing green jobs
