  • IKEA instruction people
is fairly obvious You shouldn t try to vibrate while carrying boxes Instead you should invite a friend with a bumpy head to help you The third is also straightforward If you cannot understand the 1 page instructions to screw 4 legs into your coffee table you should immediately plug a phone with a 50 foot cord directly into an IKEA store while smiling But what is the middle diagram

  • Powmax power supplies
could move the mouse That s all I needed I unplugged it tore open the case and pulled out the power supply I opened it don t do this it s dangerous and looked around for the dead capacitor The smell was definitely strong which confirmed that it was indeed the power supply and not another component with capacitors like most of them But I didn t see anything obviously burnt An exploding power supply is generally not a good testimonial to its manufacturer but here I have to make an exception This was from POWMAX a generic PSU manufacturer and it came in a generic case that I bought in 2000 It was one of the cheapest power supplies available I had previously opened it up you re not supposed to do that to replace the fan with a quieter one you re really not supposed to do that and I had to splice the wires on the non standard fan connector you re definitely not supposed to do that It was rated at 300W and I used it at almost full capacity for the majority of its life It was rarely turned off Before I bought this UPS in 2002 it was plugged into the cheapest surge protectors and fed dirty unstable power It s been moved more times than most college students And I have a homemade fan controller that uses the 5V instead of ground with the 12V to get a 7V fan current you re absolutely never supposed to do that powering all of the fans through badly spliced RCA audio cables instead of Molex connectors because they re easier to plug and unplug my computer really should have burned down the building To complete this wonderful set of conditions I haven t blown the

  • Counter-Point: Men
Men are inconsiderate lying cheaters and lazy cheating liars They think entirely with their genitals giving them the amazing ability to have negative intelligence Not only do men spread infectious diseases and horrendous jokes they are men involved in every major war repression and genocide known to history Men have no sense of honor and will betray every principle to get their own petty way If a man were ever to apologize take responsibility or perform a single selfless act well no point going into stupid hypotheticals Men have only one redeeming quality and that s me Counter point I pretty much agree by Dan You bring up some pretty good points I was all set to come to the defense of men but you ve pretty well convinced me Rather than disagreeing with you I m just going to say Preach it brother Men are pretty disgusting In fact if you juxtapose the words disgusting and men you get disgusting men And don t think that s a coincidence Every bad person in the past 5000 years has had a man for a father And everybody without a man for a father has turned out to be to be the savior of humanity I have a few other ideas on what we can do with the man problem in this country As you know men are the largest nuisance gender in the world In order to get rid of all the men I propose we hold a Last Man Standing competition where we tell all the men that there s a special prize for the last man alive in the world And that special prize could be death We shouldn t rest until every man is six feet under the bottom of the ocean I do disagree with one

  • The Switch, Part 2: First Impressions
just in case I want to play this game So I decided that I d try to create a DMG of the CD and see if it could fool the program I expected that I d need some weird hack like Daemon Tools for Windows but I figured that I d look into the system utilities anyway Applications That s a reasonable place to start Alright how about Utilities I probably need a utility Hey I bet Disk Utility could help me out There s an Image menu New I want a new image From Device SimCity 4 Wow That was easy A few minutes later I had a DMG of the first disc of SimCity 4 and it worked exactly as I had hoped it would I can now play SimCity 4 whenever I want wherever I am regardless of whether I have the CD with me By the way SimCity 4 works almost exactly like the desktop version An update from the publisher s website is critical though because without it it won t play in any widescreen resolutions This was a pretty stupid move on the publisher s part almost every Macintosh system sold today has a wide aspect LCD screen Battery life is a bit shorter than I expected but it s still excellent for such a giant bright screen in such a slim lightweight package Under my current usage with the screen at maximum brightness WiFi under constant streaming and the speakers at medium volume playing music continuously I can get about 2 45 from a charge Dropping the screen brightness makes the biggest difference at a lower brightness I can get almost 4 hours And with the backlight completely off in what I call MP3 player mode a charge lasts almost 5 hours Not bad at all especially considering that the G4 CPU wasn t designed specifically to be a mobile processor like Intel s Pentium M The speakers are spectacular They re still laptop speakers and the 1 inch diameter doesn t allow for much bass response but the general quality and volume are excellent This isn t saying much but they re the best laptop speakers I ve ever heard And somewhere there s even a built in microphone with decent quality I learned about this when I discovered the built in limited command voice recognition system You can t dictate documents with it although if you ve used modern voice recognition software before you probably wouldn t want to but you can speak commands from a predefined list containing such things as What time is it the computer then speaks the response and Open my browser And while there s no microphone port a Line In is present and the headphone jack provides amazing sound quality and plenty of power to drive big headphones Today I needed an external microphone to record something with extremely high quality at work I plugged in my external USB SoundBlaster and waited Nothing happened I

  • Windows is secure
For instance when you call the Registry functions you tell them the name of the key you want to read or write There s a bug that I m trying to fix in which the uninstallation process at some point tries to delete its own registry settings However instead of requesting its own folder it occasionally requests the empty string as its name Instead of rejecting the request the Windows

  • The Switch, Part 1: The End Of The World
rewrite of the operating system the Macintosh became the silent envy of computer geeks a highly advanced operating system based on BSD with a beautiful slick easy to use interface and all of the familiar UNIX utilities under the hood for those who wanted to mess with them I m in the market for a laptop and the PC world has been very disappointing recently It seems that nobody offers a decent warranty or support anymore but I can t take my usual strategy and build my own I briefly considered Dell until I remembered the huge hassle that their India call center put me through when I called the sales line to ask a simple question about their extended warranty on the Axim I couldn t understand the person through his thick accent and poor sentences he couldn t understand my standard American English he didn t know what dead pixels were and if the warranty covered them and he kept rudely pressuring me to purchase immediately over the phone instead of finding the answer to my question Then I looked into Apple laptops I love OS X but Macs were always those expensive computers that couldn t play games and only had a one button mouse But when I priced what I wanted from Apple and compared it to similarly equipped PC laptops from IBM Dell and Fujitsu with equivalent warranties the Apple Powerbooks were always within the same price range Apple s support is also far better and all Powerbooks come with many hardware and software features that are optional or unavailable on most PC laptops Supportive testimonials were everywhere I looked There s also a great Mac community in SH SC my favorite subforum of my favorite forum Then I went to a store to see
