  • Grateful Dead fans chill at The Almond Brothers’ concert
also noticeable with at least 15 of people having the Almond Brothers shirts The weirdest shirt there some guy had a German techno band shirt The concert There was an opening band but who cares they sucked When they cleared off we got to see that the set for the main event was particularly lacking the only highlight being that there were three drum sets Three drummers Who the fuck has three drummers They only have two guitarists for Christ s sake I mean they were good drummers but they played too much At one point there was a 20 minute drum solo between them The first 5 minutes were cool The next five were like a set of STOMP gone bad The last ten were kind of like torture Then they all went off stage and the bassist soloed for 10 minutes I was pulling out my hair I wanted to leave but at the same time wanted to hear the second half of the concert I choose poorly and stayed Unfortunately the Almond Brothers are one of those bands whose talent got caught in the seventies while the rest of the world progressed About half of their set was classic stuff and the other half this new shit that sounded kind of like Yanni with some really awesome guitar rifts and drum parts Too bad anything that sounds like Yanni still sucks They also failed to play Rambling Man my favorite song by them minus points While perhaps lacking in musical fun it was still nice to sit out under a splendid night on the Polaris lawn and just relax Plus the crowd was very cool Many people were illegally recording the concert many many people were smoking pot and not one person was being an asshole the

  • Vanilla Ice in concert!
metal guitars The bassist only used his lowest string rarely even changing notes Rest assured that he wouldn t be difficult to replace Every song of theirs sounded exactly the same They were dressed in one piece blue cloth suits bearing their logo F U almost funny almost badass which projected a wonderful gas station employee image A large F U flag was also placed on stage held up by a flimsy PVC pipe frame They tossed some CDs out to the audience and I saw at least five that simply hit the ground and stayed there It s pretty sad that people wouldn t even take their CD for free after hearing their show although I can t say that I blame them The only applause this band received was when they announced This will be our last song The second opening band was greeted with a hostile audience due largely to the poor performance of the first and the crowd s hunger for Vanilla Ice seriously They were far less awful than Fed Up but unfortunately they were not distinct enough for me to remember their name they didn t hang a flag from PVC or wear gas station uniforms They had slightly more talent than Fed Up and could probably be a one hit wonder after many years of constant practice They performed a shorter set than Fed Up to everyone s great pleasure and seemed a bit more realistic about themselves they knew that they were opening for Vanilla Ice 12 years after he became popular in a 15 concert with less than 400 people attending Then Vanilla Ice or V Ice as he wants to be called now began his set The floor filled up with fans I use this term loosely because we were

  • Al’s Soup Kitchen International (Seinfeld’s “Soup Nazi”)
five soups to choose from and they re rotated daily That day he was offering Chicken Broccoli Tomato Mussel the infamous Lobster Bisque Mexican Turkey Chili and Black Bean vegetarian We were initially put off by the prices Soups were available in Small Large and Extra Large The respective prices for Chicken Broccoli were 7 9 and 17 with most varieties falling within 2 of these prices Some like the Lobster Bisque were more expensive I selected a Large Chicken Broccoli Tiff selected a Small Chicken Broccoli and Greg selected a Small Tomato Mussel Thinking of the Seinfeld episode we didn t want to risk any tension so we traded coins and bills until we all had exact change We didn t even see that he had a cash register hidden in the lower right corner of the counter because he operated it so quickly If people needed change he d have the whole transaction completed in less than 5 seconds It was impressive I had watched the Seinfeld episode and read the rules on the website so I knew to move to the far left immediately after ordering But I couldn t There were two women standing there already so I stood as far over as I could without shoving them It wasn t enough He yelled at us Move to the left I scooted over a little more edging into the women Move to the left A little more Move to the left He wasn t doing anything else until we moved further to the left One of the women finally got the hint and moved out of the way allowing me to complete my move and satisfy Mr Yeganeh I then noticed that the sidewalk in front of the counter had a yellow spray painted diagram of an arrow pointing left to two feet where he wanted people to move Mr Yeganeh serves all of the soups himself He had some assistants walking around in the back but it seemed like they were just supplying him with anything he needed I was very impressed with his serving technique he was very careful to get the maximum amount of stuff into the cup with only a bit of broth Mr Yeganeh passed the soups to his assistants who packaged them in paper bags with an assortment of other things and handed them to us We brought them back to Greg s apartment to eat them They stayed perfectly hot for the 20 minute subway commute Here s what I got in my bag The soup was double cupped to avoid leaks and keep the heat in and each of the two plastic tubs were sealed with plastic wrap I was very surprised with everything that came with the soup and it made the price seem more reasonable We weren t paying for just the soup we were paying for a complete meal I was a bit disappointed though my Large was the same size as Tiffany s Small

  • United Airlines customer service
on for which I had no ticket we got him to call a supervisor We waited for her for another half hour She told us we weren t eligable to volunteer blah blah blah but she d call Northwest FOUR AND A HALF HOURS after we came to the service counter I was told the best they could do was to send me to Chicago on United then put me on standby for an already full small flight to Green Bay If none of the 18 people on the plane didn t show up I would have to stay in Chicago at my own expense overnight since I wasn t guaranteed a ticket and buy a flight home the next morning What I m not staying in Chicago alone at my own expense After more waiting for the supervisor she finally explained as if I would thank her for it that Northwest was going to cancel my reservation from Nashville because I didn t show up there and sign in She convinced them that I was indeed in Denver and wouldn t get to Nashville in the next twenty minutes and she convinced them to move my flight plans to the next day Morgan and his dad and I could go to Nashville stay overnight we d be getting in around 11 00 PM then I could get to the airport at 7 the next morning have a five hour layover in Minneapolis and get into Green Bay around 6 PM the next day No I couldn t just fly straight to Minneapolis United s flights were full and my tickets from Nashville were really on Continental even though it was in Northwest s name and Continental wouldn t let me take a pure Northwest flight to Minneapolis So ultimately the three of us ended up taking a flight to Nashville and getting in at 11 PM I was scheduled on Northwest s flights the next day guaranteeing a full two days spent in airports The Denver United people couldn t tell me if they would pay for a hotel room in Nashville or not wouldn t give me one of their five minute phone cards to tell my parents I was getting in 19 hours late and wouldn t give me any other compensation because I already got my free ticket for volunteering back when I thought this was a good idea Incidentally there is no way to reach someone in Nashville from Denver The United 800 number won t connect you with a person and calling the Nashville Airport Information yields someone who tells you United has no phones or computers there and there is no way you can contact them So Denver can t reserve me a hotel and I can t contact Nashville until I step off the plane Which is what we had to do Morgan and his dad had a 2 hour drive ahead of them after getting of the plane in Nashville so

  • Belkin (and Eric Deming)
since been taken down I was made aware of this posting by an e mail that was sent to Belkin s tech support e mail box Since I am a product manager for Belkin s LAN products and was very involved with the development of the Parental Control feature I feel that I can shed some light on this subject Firstly without trying to sound too stand offish we are not talking about SPAM here For me to clarify an understanding of the Parental Control service will really be needed Since Parental Control is a subscription service Belkin wanted to make registering for the service very easy Since the router actually will work in tandem with an outside server Cerberian www cerberian com registration information needs to be collected and sent to Belkin and Cerberian to activate an account Traditional methods of registration such as asking the user to go to a website or navigate to the Router s internal Web page to enter information didn t meet the ease of use goal We elected to re direct one http request to the Register Now reminder page There is a link in a previous posting if you want to see it This page asks the user to register for the service for a free 6 month trial Now granted this looks like an ad It should it is intended to be informative and easy enough to understand At this point the user can register or click No Thanks Clicking No Thanks sets a flag in the Router to stop the Router from re directing every 8 hours to the reminder page Again remember only one http request every 8 hours Admittedly there is no controlling which computer on the LAN this message will pop up on If the user just closes the window without clicking No Thanks then the flag is never set and the reminders will continue Now if you are the type that doesn t want to click the No Thanks button then no problem Navigate to the Router s internal web interface default IP 192 168 2 1 click on the Parental Control menu In the Menu select Don t Remind every 8 hours This phrase actually varies a bit but you get the idea then click Apply Changes DONE Nothing to it By the way this procedure might have to be done if your router is behind a firewall Reason filter belkin com sends a response to the Router to set the flag Firewalls will block the response This might explain the problem in a school for instance We did this not to be evil we did this to make sure that any non techy person part of our target audience would have ample opportunity to opt in or out of the free 6 month trial of the Parental Control feature The Router doesn t collect information on you and send it to Belkin We don t have the ability to SPAM you at a later

  • Buy.com and the Express Repair Plan warranty by Here2Fix
me back or giving me a call Thanks Monty To this day I have no idea what the purpose of this email was supposed to be Sending the unit to a service center That s what was supposed to happen It doesn t change anything on my end Why was it necessary for me to take further action I didn t even receive the shipping box yet I called Monty and he took my name and address which Buy com already had on file as part of the warranty registration He then explained to me that the unit would be sent to a repair center and he had to check with his boss to find out exactly what to do next He would call me back the next day This seemed a little strange you have to call your boss to see what to do on a basic service request I wonder how many people actually hold these service contracts and how large of a staff handles them Well he didn t call me back the next day so I emailed him and didn t receive a reply After playing phone and email tag for a week I finally called and asked to speak to someone else I explained the Monty situation and how I really didn t mind how my warranty was taken care of and I really just wanted to have my replacement as soon as possible The person said that only Monty could handle the situation Wonderful By this time it was July 25 I emailed him and asked him what exactly I needed to do as it had been a month since I submitted my repair and I still didn t even have the box to send my defective drive back I got no reply from Monty but on July 30 I received a confirmation email beginning with this Buy com Warranty Services On 7 30 2003 6 45 25 PM you entered a Repair Request for the following product SONY DRU120A 36 month Express Repair Plan If you have an OnSite Extended Repair Plan please call toll free 1 888 771 3705 to arrange a convenient service appointment If you have an Express Repair Plan your request has been received and an empty box for your product is on its way to you When you receive this box please place your component inside the box with all accessories included Be sure to include a copy of your original invoice Inside the empty box you will find easy instructions and a pre printed shipping label Remember You do not pay for any shipping charges That s interesting I was under the impression that I submitted the request on June 25 not July 30 I guess Monty got the idea that I was getting a little angry and finally approved the repair At no point during any communication with Monty did I ever figure out why our interaction was necessary Nothing was accomplished no new information was

piracy on the open general purpose nature of personal computers Users can freely open copy move or delete any file at any time as often as they want without any imposed restrictions Rather than adjust their business models to capitalize on computers the cartels have decided that they must restrict this general purpose nature They have tried this before Convert a CD to MP3 or WMA using Windows Media Player reinstall Windows and try to play the file It won t let you because of Digital Rights Management DRM translation copy protection because it thinks you re on another computer DRM has also been placed in hardware devices the first generation of Sony digital music players would greatly restrict the capabilities of its files they had their own file format because MP3s did not have DRM But nobody uses Windows Media Player to rip CDs anymore and the Sony music players failed miserably in the market Consumers have made their opinions clear they don t want DRM and they won t buy it So what do the music and movie cartels do Buy a law that would make it illegal to produce anything capable of playing or recording digital content without DRM This brings us back to Senator Hollings The cartels couldn t buy a law on their own so they bought Mr Hollings instead because buying politicians is not difficult And what a surprise he started drafting legislation called the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act SSSCA that would make any non DRM device illegal This includes computers digital televisions CD players DVD players MiniDiscs DAT D VHS anything that can play or record digital content The SSSCA was welcomed by harsh criticism from the public and was never introduced as legislation So he changed a couple lines and

file on your site must be linked to from another page on your site and it specifically prohibited the hosting of images used in auctions So if I posted an eBay auction I couldn t use my 100 MB of space and 2 GB of transfer to host a 20 KB picture of the item for 7 days This made it fairly difficult to use the site for many purposes beyond a simple static site But I tolerated these inadequacies because after all it was only 5 bucks a month One day in June 2001 the second to last month of the service that I purchased my bulletin board stopped working and gave permissions related errors I emailed the support team and asked them to reset the permissions and they replied saying that they had disabled my bulletin board because it was causing our server to crash almost daily Now in June 2001 the Marco org bulletin board had its lowest traffic ever And it was running the Infopop Ultimate Bulletin Board which at the time was the de facto standard for online bulletin boards I knew that it wasn t my board that caused the server crashes but they would not budge It angered me even more that they didn t tell me when they disabled the board So now my site was sitting there practically useless worse than usual and I no longer had CGI functionality that I had paid for I backed up the site to my computer and posted a notice on the front page that it would be closed for a little while Two days after they disabled my bulletin board their servers suffered a 13 hour downtime Guess their problems weren t my fault I pointed this out to them but they insisted that my script was causing the crashes I emailed them again asking to refund my money for the current and next month June and July the last months of my paid service because I was denied basic functionality that I had purchased I also clearly stated that I was NOT going to renew my account after my paid period was over They replied saying that a refund was out of the question After that email I could no longer log in to my site They disabled my account a month and a half before it was due to expire Good thing I backed it up I emailed them again asking why this was done and never got a response Then I emailed the Sales account asking the same thing I gave them the benefit of the doubt assuming that maybe the Support team couldn t deal with account payment issues and never got a response to that either I wasn t being nice anymore I looked up their Administrative Contact phone number in the WHOIS database and called only to be greeted by voicemail I left a message threatening to involve the BBB and the FTC if they did not call
