  • Democratize Democracy: Give to a Campaign
mailing or simply transportation for candidates and press is immense Mike Huckabee ran low on money and had to cancel a press plane and as far as the media was concerned he s functionally out of the race Other candidates are forced to take time off campaigning days to focus on fund raising The number of donors is as important or more important than the number of dollars If a hundred thousand people give twenty five dollars each it represents both two and a half million dollars and enthusiastic support from a hundred thousand people Donating to a campaign is sort of like betting on a horse at a race You have a stake in it and you want it to turn out well And if your candidate wins it s even better This brings us to the secret purpose of soliciting small campaign donations It will help you get personally invested in the campaign It will make the whole process that more exciting Don t wait You have access to the Internet Your candidate accepts credit card donations You have a credit card with you probably in your back right pocket And if you re reading this article I know you re not doing something better with your time To make it even easier here are links where you can donate to the candidates most frequently supported by readers of Marco org Barack Obama Editor s note Sorry that list is so short Usually we d have more diversity of opinion but apparently not this cycle If for some reason you want to donate to another candidate this great website can help you find their campaign information How much Obviously this one is up to you A lot of the campaigns are floating the suggested donation of 25 or 50 but I would think even the cost of a nice cup of coffee could be enough for you to own a bit of the political process My recommendation If your candidate of choice is the sort person you d like to have a drink with figure out where you d get the drink and pick up the tab If you re looking for something more aggressive I believe 250 is the number where your donation by law becomes part of the public records and 2300 is the maximum amount you can give per election The primary and general elections are separate so you could give 4600 to a single candidate but half the funds would be restricted Ultimately the real beneficiary of the donation is you Your donation can be your first step down the road to more intensive political activism Or if you d prefer it can be just a donation Why get involved This year there is a bit more at stake The Presidency is about more than who will pick then next batch of Federal judges We have an unpopular war an economy teetering on the edge of recession and a legislature so locked in partisan

  • State of the Union
Democratic nominee she will most likely engage in similar tactics George W Bush has been the worst president in history He and his administration have caused such significant harm to nearly everything about our country that we re unlikey to see most of it resolved in our lifetimes This was all apparent before the 2004 election and almost half of the voters still reelected him Our civil liberties and Constitution have been completely ignored and violated with or without legislation behind these actions during the last 8 years Most people have no idea what atrocities the government is legally able to commit against them under the guise of homeland security But the actual law is irrelevant since it s not enforced the executive branch violates the law frequently without ramifications Their crimes go largely unreported in the friendly media Immediately relevant issues are masked by distractions such as abortion and gay marriage Our political leaders and media use these controversial issues to stir up huge populations so they ll ignore the issues that actually affect their lives such as the domestic economy and health care The middle class continues to shrink dramatically Cost of living keeps increasing while average incomes stay flat or decrease Bush s capital gains tax cuts let the richest people in the country pay a far lower average tax rate than middle class salaried workers Middle class jobs are being replaced by unskilled jobs that offer insufficient health benefits and don t pay a living wage Real estate prices are far too high for anyone but the rich to afford homes in most major cities Those who buy homes must contribute to the massive record breaking unsustainable consumer debt and they pay vast sums of interest over their lifetimes Our education system continues to waste massive

  • Why the MacBook Air (and your laptop) are slow
from boosting them Here s something else you might not have known Laptop hard drives are much slower than desktop hard drives even with the same rotational speed 5400 RPM 7200 RPM etc If you already have 2 GB of RAM or more this is why your laptop is slow Every time Install and watch MenuMeters to see for yourself And something that we just learned from the benchmarks at this link 1 8 inch hard drives like those in the MacBook Air and hard drive based iPods are much slower than the 2 5 inch hard drives found in other laptops Take a look at the Disk Test section at the bottom of that benchmark table Not good Engadget didn t publish the drive models used by their various MacBook Pro comparison models but I d guess that the lower one is 5400 RPM and the higher two are 7200 RPM Sidenote Had anyone actually tested the 1200 premium SSD option they would have seen massive speed gains SSDs are many times faster than any hard drive in general use performance but they re not yet reasonably priced Look at the score on the iMac using a 7200 RPM

  • Sony BMG's DRM-free innovation
great choice whether you re buying for yourself or as a gift for occasions ranging from a birthday to Valentine s Day Wow I m floored To get Sony BMG s DRM free music files someone burns some coal to manufacture these petroleum based plastic cards then delivers them to stores on a series of diesel trucks I drive to Best Buy in my 3056 pound gas burning car and find my particular little plastic card assuming that store carries the album I want in plastic card format and it s in stock If not I need to drive to more stores or just give up and try again next weekend But they probably have these cards taking up space somewhere in their massive store that requires tons of energy to keep well lit and ventilated since it has no windows I bring my plastic card to a cashier one of the few dozen unhelpful unskilled underpaid undereducated employees who had to drive their 3056 pound gas burning cars to work that day for the store to operate so they could earn just enough money after taxes to buy a few plastic music cards I hand the cashier another plastic card from my wallet that serves no purpose except to hold a few dozen bytes and save the cashier the few seconds it would take to type them into the computer manually Best Buy s computer system contacts American Express computer system with those few dozen bytes and the money is electronically transferred from my account to Best Buy s The plastic card costs me 12 99 oh wait I have to pay sales tax Sidenote I found this amazing site while trying to look up the sales tax in Westchester White Plains Just try to use that site I

  • Transcending Party Politics
of Edwards He s hanging onto the race by a fingernail Maybe two fingernails after a stronger than expected Iowa finish Hillary Clinton thinks Hard Work and Experience Bring Change Now that Clinton is also a candidate for change she has offered a different way to change things She says that she has the experience and record to actually bring change about If you look at this clip in which Clinton says change nine times in just over a minute she essentially argues that saying Let there be change won t change anything She thinks she is the only one with the political saavy to accomplish their shared goals Usable experience she claims can be a better agent of change than a pretty speech Clinton has connections Clinton is part of that old political system She knows the ins and outs of Washington She knows how to get things done Obama is a Cross Between a Rock Star and a Tidal Wave The unspoken implication is that while Obama has a pretty face and a strong voice he does not have the political experience to actually get things done This is not a new critique of Obama Others have dismissed Obama s campaign as just rhetoric He is compared to Howard Dean who surged with the support of young idealistic voters and then crashed with a scream The comparison isn t exactly fair Obama does have a full policy outline PDF He also has the organization that Dean lacked He has even managed to keep up with Clinton on the fundraising front And on the experience front Obama s record of consensus building from the Harvard Law Review to the poorest parts of Chicago to the Illinois Senate to Washington D C can stand its own next to Clinton s or Edwards But even knowing this I still think of charisma and inspiring rhetoric when I think of Obama He has a lot of it Remarkably rather than agreeing with Clinton that bulldog politics will bring about change Obama disagrees He says that words themselves can inspire changes He actually puts it much better than I can in this clip Obama only manages to get out four changes in about a minute and a half Perhaps he didn t get the memo If you watch Hillary Clinton s face while Obama s talking she gets sort of a smug look as if Obama has just slipped up I genuinely believe she does not get it Our country is not great because we have competent politicians It is great because we have great ideas and we have the will to make them reality A President is leader The leader is not the guy who cuts the backroom deal The leader is the person who sets the direction The leader is the person who inspires everybody watching to be more than they thought they could be As Obama said When the American people are determined that something is going to happen then

  • Duplicating Apple's keynotes
own events like Apple s to generate similar buzz This is how a lot of the business world thinks but it s a terrible idea People are passionate about Apple s keynotes because they re passionate about Apple s products We jump through hoops to set up and follow live chat transcripts not because we want to see Steve s outfit but because we want more Apple products and their pre launch secrecy usually prevents us from discovering new releases until that moment The entire Apple hype ecosystem from the rumor sites and forums to the keynote liveblogging is fueled by the combination of secrecy and passionate users Without either element it couldn t happen But even if the other companies employed secrecy they still couldn t pull it off Can you imagine these levels of passion and anticipation for any Dell product Intel isn t even a consumer facing company despite their marketing efforts to change that Even if people got excited about a new CPU launch what are they going to do Buy a bare CPU as a desk ornament Replace a 6 month old computer to get 12 faster performance in one Photoshop filter I m sure

  • Dog Lovers and Dog Fighting
them in good health or care But all of this leads me to wonder How can a person be an animal lover and attend dog fights and not recognize until he is busted for dog fighting that the dogs involved are suffering It s so incomprehensible that I m actually tempted to write Vick in prison and ask him It would be easiest to dismiss Vick s whole letter as a bumbling bullshitting attempt to spend a little less time behind bars If he s a monster then we don t have to contemplate how someone with feelings someone who loves animals might commit these horrible crimes Short of asking the man himself here is my musing I own a pretty tough macho sort of dog When we had him in to the vet this October for odd stomach upset or back injury we met a vet tech who raised pitbulls As she examined our dog though he had some nonspecific symptoms she wasn t able to see him react to pain anywhere on his back or abdomen She compared Caboo to her male pit who once ate a six foot nylon leash first chomping it into six inch segments She monitored the situation and he passed several pieces of the leash but eventually it became obvious that the rest of it wasn t coming out Though the dog seemed happy and entirely himself she ran him in for an x ray Turns out that a piece of the leash was lodged in his stomach the nylon had begun to unravel and that as his intestines continued to attempt to pull the leash through the intestines were climbing up the long threads and into his stomach An emergency surgery to remove both the leash and parts of his intestine saved his life A few more hours and he d have been dead and though he must have been in some acute level of discomfort as sections of his intestine actually started to die he gave no sign of it Is it possible to attend a dog fight and not see the suffering Pitbulls are brave brave dogs I can imagine how their bred in training fired aggression might look like eagerness to fight Like a good English teacher I have a book for everything In Jack London s White Fang the dog is put to use in every conceivable contest He hunts and pulls a sled He bests other dogs in pulling contests He beats other dogs in fights they run out of dogs whose owners are willing to face him and begin matching him with wolves and even a lynx At last he looses a fight to a bulldog The fight is long since over and the bulldog is slowly strangling White Fang when a bystander breaks the rules to step in prise the bulldog s jaws off and buy the almost dead dog from his uncaring owner As a child reader before I knew that our cities housed

  • 2008 Election Prediction (Revised)
who is he He s a former governor of Arkansas and a former Baptist minister He s charismatic He s funny When Romney gave his talk about Mormonism he offered to give a God talk too if national media wanted to cover it He offered to throw in an offering and an altar call as well And most importantly he is pulling ahead in Iowa and South Carolina He is still behind nationally but an Iowa victory might give him the momentum he needs to grab the nomination And how can somebody Chuck Norris supports lose Of course he has some weaknesses as well Perhaps most notably he probably did not consider himself a serious contender so he has taken some fairly awkward positions If he starts winning primaries he will have a bit of explaining to do on how he plans to create a national sales tax to replace the IRS Barack Obama is indeed a superstar In my last analysis I undersold Obama I thought he had a largely spotless record I thought he was the most brilliant charismatic and eloquent of the Democrats However I did not think this would be enough to stand up to the Clinton juggernaut I was wrong A month away from the first primaries Obama is not only still in the race he is pulling ahead in Iowa and rapidly gaining in New Hampshire and South Carolina Clinton still has a commanding lead nationally but it is less than half of what it was a month ago As Obama gets a bit more name recognition as the electoral season goes on Clinton s lead could evaporate And Clinton does seem to be getting desparate She has launched a spate of attacks including this gem which dredges up an essay Obama wrote in kindergarten titled I Want to Become President In January I though nothing could compete with a Bill Clinton endorsement I think I was wrong Check out this video though I should warn you that it is just under twenty minutes long and you probably won t be able to tear yourself away midway through Obama himself may be bigger than Clinton He is like Abraham Lincoln MLK Jr and Neo all rolled into one Even if Ron Paul isn t a credible candidate he makes a good indicator People want change and Obama offers it This is an election where experience in Washington is a liability as poor Senator Biden is apparently learning Even Clinton has seen the writing on the walls or perhaps in the polls and titled her new ad A New Beginning What it all means In the end I could see either Huckabee or Giuliani winning the Republican nomination and either Clinton or Obama winning the Democratic nomination How would the various pairings go Clinton v Giuliani I discussed this one earlier Giuliani doesn t have a great record on civil liberties and human rights but Clinton is on record saying that human rights can never
