and on my next visit to Whole Foods I purchased the other 3 designs they had available at the time A very good friend of mine works for REI and for my birthday she wrapped my gift in a REI canvas bag instead of wrapping paper What a great idea My latest bag came from a Farm Girl sister that she hand made and embroidered my initials on It s my favorite but shhhh don t tell the other bags o After each shopping trip I unpack and place all the empty bags into one and put them right back in my truck so they are ready for my next shopping trip It makes me feel wonderful knowing I m doing my tiny part in making a difference in reducing the amount of plastic or paper bags used every year MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Dec 02 2010 12 14 27 PM Sunny However there are many many more residents now which include some elderly folks who have been farming here for decades It also includes more than one disabled person We have very community minded neighbors and we all work together to help others in our rural community Because we have lived here for decades as have many of the other residents we have a help each other out mentality that is implemented an a very regular basis Getting er Done projects have included working on irrigation systems house cleaning and repair feeding animals for neighbors doing farm field work clearing snow for neighbors building projects together tending gardens yards helping with harvest regular checking in on elderly assistance to those who are disabled in whatever they need We have been blessed with a terrific bunch of neighbors and can honestly say we have been we do and will continue to help each other Our community neighbors are as far as 5 miles away so it s a pretty impressive network My involvement far exceeds the time requirement MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Dec 03 2010 11 30 52 AM CJ Armstrong ceejay48 665 has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a beginner level Community Action badge Our community is rural with agriculture as the main livelihood for folks It s a beautiful place to live and a good place to raise your family or retire However one of the main issues is that of industry to provide employment for people who move here The pay scale is low for most and resources are limited For example there are hundreds of women here who are seamstresses but our only available source for fabric and other supplies is the limited and downsized fabric department at Walmart There are many other factors that impact this community and the ability of people to make a good living It is difficult to be able to pinpoint the exact branch of government that is responsible but it seems like it could be a combination Most of the farms and ranches that are the backbone of this area have been in families for generations and are very solidly established There are some other businesses that have their roots that have grown into larger companies serving the entire country probably foreign countries because of the brilliant entrepreneurial finesse of owners One of those companies makes backpacks and related equipment that is sold worldwide Another is one that manufactures toys and distributes all over the USA What seems to make a difference is for folks to beat the bushes and create jobs in areas that meet a need of the area and get really creative in finding the money to fund such an endeavor one of those would be grants Tourism is another job provider however it is seasonal It becomes the responsibility of business owners and the county to promote this area and what it offers Perhaps some of that would be the responsibility of the state government And possibility the National Park Service as we have Mesa Verde National Park right here If tourists are attracted to the park then that benefits the local businesses It s a tough issue to address because of the uniqueness of our area and the fact that we are at least 300 miles from a metropolitan area and the amenities available there It is also complicated by the fact that because we are in the Four Corners area we are bordered by the other three states by reservation land most of which is arid desert One can really admire the spirit of those who dig in and use their resources to their fullest exhibit huge measures of being inventive and creative stubbornness and determination My husband and I take pride in the fact that we are of that determined creative fabric and are making things happen for us We are also part of a network of folks who do the same and we are all part of working to make this area a better place for folks to earn their income as well as enjoy living here MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane composting continues with absolutely everything possible to throw in We ve been able to use some in our garden earlier before the end of the season Spent quite a bit of time researching different types of permanent compost bins The tough part is building one that is virtually impossible for any animal to get into We have had a terrible time with coons skunks and deer We also had to attempt to build something that was bear proof and elk proof The only one of these animals that has not been in our garden in our compost in our yard and walked across the lawn are the elk However there are elk in the woods back of our house so the possibility exists for them to visit as well We are using two very heavy duty very large garbage containers with covers and enclosed in a wood pallet enclosure with chicken wire pushed into an area with large sagebrush around should discourage critters access The idea is a take off from a barrel composter sold by Lehmans Our community does not have a composting program but I have written a letter to our paper And I plan to pursue the topic with some of the other Farmers Market vendors that we interact with We have

of achievement in Stitching Crafting for earning a beginner level Homespun Christmas badge I am pleased to report that I earned my Homespun Christmas Badge by handcrafting 75 of the gifts I gave this holiday season as well as 25 of the ornaments with which I adorned my Christmas tree Oh my goodness I had such a good time crafting for all of my friends and family this Christmas I knitted 2 scarves one of each for my parents made sweet little country rag ornaments with fun festive buttons to give as gifts and for my own tree homemade body glitter to add a touch a extra sparkle to the holiday of of loved ones a handcrafted button wreath and decorative recipe card for my fellow farmgirl sisters a jingle bell basket at a local community center and I also filled Ball jars with tasty treats or ornaments and added a bit of fabric on the tops and tied them off with holiday ribbons Instead of being all stressed out and being overwhelmed by the holiday hustle and bustle I was tucked away indoors crafting with friends On a couple occasions a few close friends and I grabbed dinner brought it back to my place turned on some cheery Christmas music and got to work There was much warmth love and laughter in my little apartment this December Everyone loved their gifts and were amazed that I made them all myself MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 now swap ideas on a regular basis especially now that she is expecting her first baby and is always looking for ways to maintain a clean home naturally A friend and her husband from the city will be visiting me soon at my country home I m eager to see how she reacts to my homemade cleaners I m sure she will utilize my washing machine and use my homemade detergent I can t wait to see what she thinks of its cleaning power compared to what she is used to My mission statement is simple I feel much healthier while using these homemade products because there is no leftover smell after cleaning While using these products I know I m doing something good for the environment myself and my loved ones as well as my pets I also conserve much needed space when I store them Instead of buying a new product each shopping trip because the last one didn t work as well as I d hoped and having a bunch of bottles cluttering up my cupboards I only have to keep a stock of 8 multi purpose ingredients vinegar distilled water Borax washing soda baking soda bleach Zote Soap and a variety of essential oils I know that with a combination of a few of these products I will discover some sort of cleaning agent That s one more thing I like about them they are all multi purpose Some of them even transfer over into other spheres of use in the home such as cooking And as I mentioned before buying all these products saves money Plus it s more FUN to come up with new recipes and scents when creating cleaning products at home Therefore I pledge to only utilize clean non toxic homemade cleaning products because they are healthier save space cost efficient and fun I will never turn back MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jan 07 2011 1 58 21 PM Elizabeth Thums prairie princess 1505 has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a intermediate level Going Green badge I have been using MaryJane s recipe for Powdered Laundry Soap from the August September 2009 issue for about 3 months The only change in ingredients is I replace the 1 grated bar of Castile Soap for 1 grated bar of Zote Soap I do this for economic savings I believe Zote Soap is a good substitute for the Castile soap since it is also made of natural components I love making my own laundry detergent because I can change the fragrances by changing the essential oils I use in the mixture I ve been using distilled white vinegar in place of fabric softener for about 7 months I ve discovered I prefer it over store bought softener because it doesn t gunk up my dispenser I have to use more of it during the cold months due to increased static electricity but it s no problem I find the vinegar to be more cost efficient regardless I ve been using a mixture of vinegar and essential oils as a multi purpose cleaner for about 7 months as well I have discovered it shouldn t be used on wood surfaces that have no protective sealing because it will cause color changes in the wood For those surfaces I use plain water to wipe off the dust or a magnetic duster I also use vinegar and water as a glass cleaner Although I only have wood floors in the majority of my house I ve been using MaryJane s Carpet Deodorizer recipe on my area rugs for a few months to freshen up the pet smell in my house I have transferred some of the green health ideas for cleaning into other areas of my life as well I have been making homemade toothpaste for about a year after discovering some of the side effects of ingredients in store bought toothpaste This is the recipe I use 2 T baking soda 1 ½ t peroxide 5 drops essential oil I ve tried peppermint spearmint and lemon a warning use less spearmint because it s very strong I have also been making my own mouthwash 2 oz Distilled water ¼ t baking soda 1 drop peppermint oil 1 drop tea tree oil witch hazel Over the summer my husband s aunt passed on a recipe for homemade bodywash that I ve also been using 1 C grapeseed oil 1 ½ C epsom salts ½ C coconut oil melted ¼ C olive oil 1 T honey melted 5 drops essential oils of choice Whisk oils together add salts dribble in honey slowly If more than ½ in oil settles to the top add more epsom salts I discovered I didn t need as much oils so can reduce amounts if prefer I hope to start making my own shampoo conditioner lotion and soap in the future I ve notice after passing on information to my mother in law she has now reverted to making her own toothpaste I share with others by setting the example Am much impressed with the cleaning power of homemade cleaners compared to store bought I will never look back after having made my own MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jan 07 2011 2 56 06 PM Susan manual for joining two or more abseil rappel lines to one another and is considered a valuable life support knot MUNTER FRICTION HITCH also a life support knot will check and hold a load through friction Is used with a carabiner It is recommended that if it becomes necessary to free both hand for a vital task one should resort to the MUNTER MULE which also uses a carabiner Learning more about life support knots is of more interest and use to me because of our camping hiking skiing activities etc One of my projects was to knot with surgeons knot nylon baling twine and then braid to not only reuse baling twine but have more options for lightweight useable ropes for small projects Using the Turk s Head knot also to make small coaster mat and bracelets which made unique gifts While it may be an 80 s rage macramé is still useful and made great decorative wall hangings evening plant hangers also unique gifts Making the hammock as in Mary Janes Ideabook was a bit of a nightmare especially to get it started as it was a challenge to support the rows of loops knots and occasionally I missed a loop and had to go back ARRGGHH But it will be a nice thing to have for a summer evening to relax and enjoy the outdoors My hubby already had some oak for the end stretcher bars Helped teach my daughter some rope techniques by guiding her through building her swing and making a rope Also with my hubby especially in the making of rope from plastic bags We believe that this serves more than one purpose It reuses plastic bags makes a reasonably strong rope that can be added to and is something we can carry in our cars for minor emergencies These projects have gotten everyone in the family involved and learning and we re having fun with it I ll be hanging my hammock next summer when all this
