he wears boots when he competes Yes the horse is not wearing iron nailed on shoes but neither is he barefoot as there is still a layer of protection between his bare hoof and the ground I ride my horses between 800 and 1000 miles a year in various harsh terrains Barefoot does not work for me Barefoot across the board as Mr Camp proclaims does not work for horses being ridden that hard carrying extra weight in rocky mountainous terrain The people who have ridden with me in that rough terrain whose horses are barefoot have horses that mince along or walk on the side of the trail off the rocks because their feet hurt I did agree with his statements about letting a horse be a horse in the most natural environment possible My horses are out 24 7 without shelter Until it is below 40 degrees and raining or sleeting or snowing with wind they are left alone In the above mentioned circumstances I put waterproof insulated blankets on them and feed them lots of hay MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 dive in The manual was four months late getting to me because it was back ordered so that s my excuse and I m sticking to it I had been out of the exercise loop since becoming ill with Thyroid problems so I wasn t looking forward to getting back into it I knew I was out of shape but I had been very disciplined before by walking three miles a day five days a week religiously no matter what the weather This routine was easier in that it was indoors but it WAS a workout I have done it for a month now and I feel much better about it MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA quite a workout I ve only missed two days in two months now so I consider that to be a success I nearly always eat only organic food so that has not been an issue with me I have kept up the exercise program now for actually three months and I will continue to do it and expand on it as time and muscles allow My diet is very healthy already so my goal was to get back into an exercise program and I house I literally wrote a mission statement on the white board in the kitchen saying from here forward we are going green and recycling Now it is just known amongst my family members that mom likes green I began phasing out my non green cleaning products After my previously purchased non green cleaning products ran out I vowed not to repurchase those things I could make or buy green I am now on to trying testing out some of those very recipes I ve collected in my notebook In addition to my immediate family I have shared my green notebook with my mother who is a fellow MaryJane Farmgirl intending to start her very own going green mission I am impressed with my family s progress so far in going green Of course it s a constant ongoing process when it comes to greening your house life but we have BEGUN the process starting with our cleaning products My husband and children have been cooperative with these efforts It s something I ve wanted to do for some time but never got around to implementing it Now I am constantly learning new greening tips and little by little making changes MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Nov 15 2011 that I put together but it helped me brush up on some quilting techniques such as adding a backing This quilt took me many hours to do I have two small children and I only have part of nap time to work on anything It came out very nice and I m sure my niece will really enjoy it My favorite part of the quilt is the way I did the ties Instead of just tying a knot with embroidery floss I sewed buttons at the corners of each block It took a lot longer to do it that way but it is so beautiful and was a great way to use some of my button collection MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane badge I started a button collection in early January However my family does not wear very many garments with buttons I was off to a slow start By June I had just 3 I thought I would never get 50 In early September my dad and I stopped at an estate sale I bought a box of sewing stuff and tucked in the bottom was a tin full of beautiful buttons I now have well over 200 I have gone though the tin of buttons that I purchased and even used some for ties on a quilt that I made There are some buttons with tags still on them but it is plain to see that the vast majority came from a lifetime of cutting buttons off garments that were most likely repurposed into something else I don t know the woman that owned them or her family but I like to think that she is looking down from heaven and is commercially raised meat Not just for me the consumer but also the animals the workers and the environment I was unaware of some of the specific details that many of these corporate farmers use to try and increase their bottom line Some of the more disturbing things I learned was about the feed and ultimatly the health of these animals How can these farmers think that candy with wrappers pot scrubbers recycled magazines and newspapers not to mention all of the hormones anti biotics and other types of medications are good for them or us 500 billion per year lost because of Ascites The pasture raised chickens do not have these kinds of mortality rates It s cheaper and better for us and their pockets so why are we still buying this garbage I found a farm nearby where I live on their home and choices I decided to use the beginner portion of this badge to update my green journal which lives in our health care office as a resource I recently welcomed a quilting friend to my neighborhood and brought her a lovely basket of homemade cleaning products Intermediate I learned a lot making laundry detergent and soap I am well versed in all purpose window floor bath cleaners already but had not taken the step to make my own soap or laundry detergent A little goes a long way with a high efficiency front loader I read all the forums on MJF and researched what others have come up with on the internet and now have about a 5 year supply by the washer My soap came out rather hilarious as I used shaped ice cube silicone trays to mold the soap I tried my lavender flowers and yes it is more of a scrub type of soap vs creamy I had some friends over last month to help make the soap and gave each lady a copy of my laundry detergent and hand sanitizer recipes with little bottles of each Expert My home and office as well as art studios are all organized around green We have outdoor clothesline pictured below and I like to plant lots of herbs and flowers to enjoy while I hang out wash During the winter I still use the outdoor line in the middle of the day but I also have two heavy rods that are 8 feet each inside our boiler room hot water heat that basically is a drying room I also use a stand up wood rack and a lighter weight rod above the washer for lightweight items We use non toxic paints have wood floors with hand knotted area rugs air filtration water filtration non toxic mattresses furniture and fabrics I have donated far more than the required 6 hours to several friends to transform their living environments from toxic to healthy I have an entire lending library in my office that is highly used and well respected I love sharing good news simple living healthy choices and a hopeful future with the folks that pass through our office and lives I in my studio This led to a spontaneous talk to a local youth group on simple ways to go green while still living at home My efforts to inspire others to stop using those hideous plastic bags at the grocery had been well rewarded Our local food coop now has someone making net bags for produce as a small cottage industry and is offering lots of handmade totes Our offspring and their partners are enjoying the sets of bags I sent as harvest gifts filled with goodies from the farm of course Two of my girlfriends are looking at offering a free class on sewing up present bags for the holidays at all levels Beginner Intermediate Expert I read Lynn Coulter s book among others to further my understanding of seed saving for produce and flowers Last spring I spent a lot of time researching Monticello s gardens and how Thomas Jefferson worked his rotations of food items Granted he still had slaves and lived in an era very unlike our own but at the same time Jefferson introduced amazing varieties of plants from Europe to the US for the first time all of which are now considered heirloom varieties Last fall I saved many seeds including cosmos hollyhock lakota squash Juliet tomato early Jersey wakefield green cabbage four heirloom peas and beans nasturtiums peppers etc This year I planted and grew many of these to adult fruiting stages and re saved many of the varieties It has been an amazing education in agriculture and a time when there weren t online catalogs for everything I could ever want to grow My gardens this year were over 90 heirloom varieties with fantastic success I have also been very blessed with excellent friends and neighbors that have joined together in protecting and cultivating our heritage plants We did a lot of swapping including some of my flowers that I painted fancy little seed packets as gifts My favorite is my close neighbor s great great grandmother s snap beans fabulous tasty abundant and I saved a ton of seed to share next season Overall the results are very inspiring with a few abject failures I am so very grateful my family will not starve because one or two crops failed It is humbling how much there is to know and put into practice but I can honestly report my seed saving area of the root cellar is full to the brim for next season MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Nov 17 2011 3 crocheted a pattern that was supposed to be a one hour scarf When I finished it it looked more like one of those halo things that doctors put around patient s necks who have had a whiplash so I pulled it all out and started over I used a chenille yarn that was very thick and the pattern said to hold two together so the second go around I used only one skein of yarn This time it looked a lot better and had more drape to it Now I am pleased with how it turned out The one hour scarf took about five hours altogether Tonight at the craft in that we Farmgirls have on Thursday nights I taught Karen a fellow Farmgirl who is a knitter how to crochet She is doing well with it but is tight with it like most of us were right now because it is new to her MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow worst part Installing the flooring was pretty simple and quick once we remembered to tilt the preceding piece The dogs helped by standing on the foam underlayment As a side benefit I sorted through lots of stuff that had been languishing on shelves and in cupboards for many a year waiting for someday Most of it is going to Salvation Army Now the room seems less cluttered and more inviting The downside Now I see all the dust dirt and dog hair that used to hide in the carpet But my husband says that he already notices less aggravation of his allergies MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane For spaghetti sauce I used organic tomato paste I just finished a box of organic granola using soy milk instead of regular milk For Thanksgiving dinner I made green bean casserole with all organic ingrdients except the Durkee s onions I have tried others but I am at work and don t have my list For a new non organic food I tried sauteed eggplant and on another day roasted turnips To me flour is flour But I like the idea of using organic natural flour I could tell no difference in using the tomato paste Again just felt better knowing I d used it Same with the granola and soy milk However I did notice a difference in the green beans straight from the can firmer and better tasting By the time all the other ingredients were added I could tell no difference and nobody made any comments So far as noted above I can tell little to no difference I will continue to try organic foods because it makes me feel that I am making a small difference MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow miles listed on the site One of the farms is less than a mile down the road from my house I have known them in a horse training context and had no idea that they raised grass fed animals for sale I have heard stories about what has been included in animal feed and even read a novel years ago based on that premise It just seems obvious to me that natural conditions and feeds are better for the animal and therefore better for the consume r But I also understand the desire for profit and the slim pocketbooks of purchasers I grew up eating moose deer mountain sheep mountain goat caribou buffalo ptarmigan an occasional bear salmon ling cod and halibut All were wild My mother bought bacon and occasionally chicken The moose meat was made into hamburger with beef suet to keep the patties from crumbling breakfast sausage summer sausage and one year hotdogs Now in Oregon we eat primarily deer and elk Once in a while we eat freshly caught salmon ocean going halibut and trout I still buy beef chicken and pork for variety I would like to try some pasture fed meat but don t know if I can afford to I had always been told that wild game was leaner than domestic and that the red meat limitations did not apply to game It was interesting to see the graphs on eatwild com that showed the truth of that statement MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Asheville NC Since I don t have access to a drum carder I carded the ENTIRE FLEECE by hand from washing it to the carding to pulling it into roving to spinning that sucker on a Lendrum single treadle wheel Best Time Ever I taught my neighbor Teri to help since that was a ton of fleece Well 6 pounds at least From Jester that was the sheep s name I did several 200 yard balls of single ply and a metric ton of thin singles over the next few months that I plied into a DK weight 15 wpi two ply yarn The yarn was gifted to a knitting friend For several months in lieu of a spinning class in the requirements I taught my stitch n bleep group how to spin at our meetings A couple girls have gone on to buy wheels and at least one is enrolled in the Master Spinner Program now so apparently I infected her with the bug I m hooked on spinning I sold my wheel when we moved to NE but I still have my drop spindle and several braids of off the hook gorgeous top to play with when my fingers itch I ve made all kinds of things out of the yarns created most of them gifts a few for me It s probably my favorite of the fiber arts The attached picture is of one of the novelty yarns made from fiber I dyed spun thick and thin left as a single ply It was prettier to look at than the more boring two ply even yarns were LOL MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted and experimented with a few small projects using sizes 10 20 and 30 threads And I learned how to add beads to my work I tatted an edging on a 12 square hankie I do not know how to crochet so I found and used instructions from an old booklet on how to attach the tatting to the edge of the hankie as I worked using a joining picot I ve given several of my smaller two color snowflakes and beaded medallion projects as gifts The hankie turned out lovely and it s so pretty I can t bring myself to use it so I have it displayed on my dresser It is so fun to look back at earlier projects and see how my skill is improving MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jan 03 2012 1 46 47 PM Laurie Conner Montrose Girl 1587 has received a certificate of achievement difficult with my job as they are everywhere and we have a thick book of them As a gift a few years back I received a book The Word Museum It has amazing words that have been forgotten So I used that as an inspiration for my two weeks of words fubbery deceit deception quanked Overpowered by fatigue thigger One who draws on others for subsistence in a genteel sort of way mawmsey sleepy stupid as a brochure describing the various energy options available along with approximate cost differences After reading the information I called the power company and found out that most of the power for the basic service option comes from coal It costs about 10 a month more to switch to other cleaner service PacifiCorp does have several green options with varying amounts of different power supply The cost per 1000 kwh was not that much different but with a power bill of 120 dollars when I was expecting 80 I am not able to add another 10 dollars a month for the green options The option I am most interested in has over half of the power generated by wind with smaller amounts generated by solar biomass and other I was surprised that PacifiCorp had an option completely independent of coal Farmgirls in September so together we are a team She practically lived at my house throughout October helping me to finish my book Alive Health Recipe Book Healthy Eating On The Run Then in November she helped me for three hours to promote the book at an Expo that was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce I went to her house later that month to help her cut out four Christmas stockings that she was making for gifts She has arthritis in her hands and using scissors is difficult for her I had to go to her house in December to print out the transfers for my newest badges because I found out that HP printers like the one I have get too hot and melt the transfer substance Then I helped her to put the names on her almost finished stockings with iron on transfers so that she could get them done them in time for Christmas We have been in and out of each other s homes for three months now helping to Get er Done with projects and each time it has been for at least two hours and many times
