found it to be really interesting I m a Master Gardener and had volunteered at a garden called Cedar Hill near me I was there one time when Kat the director brought out a photograph book of the history of the place The book was literally falling apart with the pages torn at the edges of the binder The pictures were in glue pages that had yellowed from age Kat mentioned that she needed to redo it and I said that I would I found a scrap book on sale at Michaels that had flowers on the front and off I went Our chapter had a lot of equipment already so I didn t have to buy anything more to do it Kat was delighted when she got it just in time for an Open House they re having Even though she knew about it it was quite a surprise for her when she saw it MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts Quilting badge For this badge I decided to make quilted potholders out of some cute material scraps that were given to our chapter They just epitomized Farmgirls in my opinion and I think they turned out very well Adding the backing was more challenging than I thought it would be but I eventually got it in A bigger project would have made that easier I made nine of the potholders and spent way more than three hours doing this On the first one I used a polyester knit for the back and someone mentioned that it should be cotton so it wouldn t melt I used unbleached cotton muslin for all the rest of them and will keep the polyester one for myself and just be careful with it The rest will be Christmas presents for later this year MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA finally came up with a design for a clothes pin holder using a Farmgirl inspired material It took way over 20 hours to do and turned out very differently from what I had originally envisioned Actually it kind of evolved and I got input for it from several of the girls in our local chapter I spent at least five hours quilting this in the company of the crew I put the batting on the back by ironing it on which was much easier It also became the lining and I didn t have to do anything else to the inside I think it turned out very well I have used it a number of times when I put the clothes out on the line to dry and when I put plastic and and old coverlet over my garden during cold weather MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Mar 26 2012 11 58 58 AM month was on the Farmgirl Spirit We all dressed up as our idea of what the Farmgirl spirit meant to us individually so there were lots of aprons involved We all brought food to eat can t have a party without food and chowed down Then we went around the room and everyone spoke on how they found the Farmgirls It was a fun and interesting way to get to know our fellow Farmgirls better and one member Paula brought her collection of vintage aprons to show She generously gave away one to each of us so we all have mementos of the day She wisely decided to just keep pictures of each of us with the aprons because they had been sitting stored away in a bag for years Things are meant to be used and all of us will enjoy them Here s a picture of us MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow A few days before and after Oct 25 2011 I and several other people helped a neighbor of ours move to our road because his house was being foreclosed We moved stuff after boxing everything up and I actually spent over 40 hours helping him I brought some food over during the moving process and helped him get settled into the new place afterward It was difficult because he had to be out by the 25th so we had a deadline After he got settled in I gave him a copy of the prices for grass fed grass finished beef Heritage pork raw milk and free range eggs from a USDA certified farm close to us Because he was fairly local already he did not need phone numbers He has tried the products from the farm but says he doesn t have time to go buy from it That s a shame but it is his loss MaryJane beginner scarf this one was knitted sideways Instead of casting on 30 stitches and knitting until the scarf was the desired length I had to cast on 168 stitches and knit to the desired width I used circular needles for the first time and was shocked to realize I was knitting without end an infinity loop so I had to undo the 168 stitches and the first few rows of knitting and start over again I also had to switch between two different colors which is something else I ve never done before I love this pattern I think the scarf is gorgeous and the stripes add so much detail I started another scarf using this pattern with a purple lavender white and grey varegated yarn which will have black stripes to go with a black coat I think I will be making this scarf pattern a lot I m getting great groceries in the reusable bags at the car has made me begin to remember them Today I use them every time MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Apr 12 2012 10 22 Since January 2012 I have driven 4000 miles Which means it is time for an oil change My vehicle gets approximately 18 miles to the gallon It costs approximately 68 00 to fill up the tank It is great to know what is going on under the hood of my vehicle I am no longer helpless in that area MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Apr 12 2012 10 25 01 AM Amy Farmer Amy D 3695 has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an intermediate level Grease Chicks badge In January of 2012 I visited my parents in Arkansas While there I asked my father if he would help me earn this badge He thought it was funny that I wanted him to teach me how to do an oil change when I could take my mini van to the quick lube and pay about the same price to have it done for me I explained to him the importance of me knowing how to do it I have always had a curiosity as to what went on under the hood Well maybe in the spring summer and fall time of the year My dad was never a fan of having his daughter under foot while he was doing car maintenance cutting the grass or any kind of man work So this was a big step in our relationship A funny step to be honest The time came for our lesson Mama of course told me to put on a pair of insulated coveralls She didn t want her baby to be cold I am 37 I was grateful none the less Dad instructed me to pull the mini van up on the jack stands I guess he forgot I was never given the opportunity to do this kind of thing I was very nervous I would drive off the other side of them I did it though He already laid out an old tarp so we wouldn t get anything on the ground I was glad he did this as I wasn t really digging the idea of rolling in the dirt As we crawled under the vehicle I prayed that this would be a good experience It was a super tight fit under there I had to lay there for a few minutes to get acquainted with my new space Dad showed me what everything under there was And then decided he would crawl back out from under the vehicle to get the tools My daddy is 72 years old and after 5 trips up and down from under the mini van I told him I think the first step should be to get all the tools together before you begin He agreed with a laugh I reminded him that our time together under there would be FUN and filled with laughter He agreed again After a while of him struggling to loosen the oil filter he finally let me use the wrench He was very discouraged to see that we drained less than 2 quarts out of the mini van He asked if I checked the oil before I left for my 600 mile trip to his house Well of course I did Daddy It was to that line kind of I think We filled the oil back up with the proper amount Which was found in the maintenance book I took a picture of it with my cell phone so I would have it for quick reference next time We also put together a bucket of fluids that remains in the trunk area at all times It turned out wonderful I now know how to change the oil in the mini van Plus I got to spend some quality time with my Daddy MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Apr 12 2012 10 26 11 AM Amy Farmer Also how to change a tire That was exciting I have never understood what went on with an air gauge I am now aware that you put more than a key and gas in a vehicle to make it from point A to point B soda Bon Ami distiller white vinegar hydrogen peroxide dish soap and some essential oils These ingredients seem to take care of most every cleaning job I need to tackle I began this whole process by keeping a journal of green living ideas and the journal has since expanded into ideas for all areas of my life I love it My family s mission statement pledging to use only green cleaners in the future Because our family believes in green living and we want to do our part to make the world we live in a better and safer place for future generations we pledge to purge our home of all toxic chemicals them I have gotten my electric bill down under 25 for a family of 5 I love my new room It is Mommie Den where it had been the Man Cave for my son I only spent 10 for the entire change over for some because I can t stand the noise of hearing them drip never mind the amount of water they waste Having a handyman in my house does help I have been conserving water for many years now especially after the two years of extreme drought that Georgia went through awhile back I actually timed the length of my showers and a regular one is two minutes long If I have to wash my hair it is five minutes because I have to leave the conditioner in my hair for two minutes The amount of water used up in waiting for it to get hot is five gallons per day During the summer that is not an issue except for showers because I don t need the water to be hot Therefore I save 28 gallons of water a week when it s warm outside like it is now MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts water that your household uses except for toilets which is black water and examples of this are laundry water and sink water This type of water can be used for watering plants and washing cars in many but not all areas Some places have ordinances against it but attitudes are changing as water shortages show up in more and more places Last year when I took the Master Gardening class they gave us the opportunity to make a rain barrel in an outside class They provided all of the materials and had drilled all the holes so assembling it was easy The cost of the materials was only 40 so it was a very good deal I now have it on my back deck and use it to water all of my outdoor plants and for my Aerogardens indoors which require unmineralized water MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Quilting badge I was a member of a quilt guild that offered a challege for their quilt show They gave us some 1930 s fat quarters and asked that we make a traditional 1930 s wall hanging I researched quilt blocks that would have been used in 1930 s quilts and also what a number of quilts looked like in that era I decided that I would used construct a traditional patchwork motif and made my personal challenge TRIANGLES I completed the quilt top and had a friend show me how to do binding correctly I entered the wallhanging in the contest for fun I thought it was a little stressful because there would be many quilters who would participate in the challenge that were way past my quilting level However I worked diligently on trying to make blocks with triangles that did not lose their points always a challenge for me I spent hours on my first block agonizing over triangle points But finally I was able to greatly improve as I did more blocks My wallhanging did not win a prize but for me the prize was having the courage to put an entry in a big show and to challenge myself to improve MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Apr 13 2012 1 00 34 Shopping Green badge For the beginner level it was rather easy I had to collect six reusable bags I have six in my car at any one point in time I even have a little sack rolled up in my pocketbook Next was to commit to using them when I shopped To be honest I was much better at this in theory rather than practice I could look in my trunk and make sure that they were there I could tell myself I would no longer use any type of store bag But inevitably a store bag would sadly wind up in my car with me disappointed staring down at my trunk strewn with reusable bags I decided one day that this had to change and that I had to get things in gear I decided notes were going to be my friend to make this become a habit I was on a mission I decided to put notes on my dashboard one in my wallet I have left the store to go out to the car get bags and return only once I have had success It has been wonderful I committed to doing this for 21 days with no mistakes I have been a successful I have even dropped one of my bags occasionally in a cart for another while waiting in line I feel good about my commitment The noticeable less waste in my house is amazing The kids and my husband do not ask about the missing plastic bags I stuck a few in his car and he even uses them My youngest will search the kitchen for one similar to the one I toss in my purse and clip it to his jeans Until he has it drying in the house is great though the cats seem to think some of it is for them so had to hang them higher I have also found that living in Massachusetts some herbs do not do well if they have a long growing season what too much rain does I had basil the size of lettuce that even the chickens wouldn t eat after months of rain I have been creating special blends for my tomatoes that I put in Nellie Make do badge This tote bag is made from recycled curtains that were white with a blue band They reminded me of the bag I had bought from Michaels so I decided to make a tote using that bag as a pattern I spent way over 100 hours on this because I took out as much as I sewed I tried using a doubling of the cloth as a batting but the tote wouldn t stand up that way So I checked with the Farmgirls and got some leftover batting from a quilting project from one of them Likewise with some interfacing which I had to piece together to make it fit I used chalk to draw lines on it for quilting and then couldn t get the chalk off It took many washings with different soaps to get it clean I also found that since the fabric was a knit type it kept pulling out of shape when I sewed it But since I m going to cover it with MaryJane badges that won t matter I m really pleased with how this turned out but my advice to others is buy one don t try to make one That would be a whole lot easier MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Apr 18 2012 2 24 01 PM Tami Linamen 4029 has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching Crafting for earning the Garden badge Each year our garden grows bigger and bigger Last year and again this year we ve chosen to use trellises and bean tee pee s to help save space Both the bean tee pee and the trellises were very easy to put together and use I used some branches from a tree that recently had to be cut down and wrapped them w twine that I had on hand The tellises were made from some leftover rebar and cattle fencing that we also had on hand MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Apr 25 2012 3 29 46 PM Mandi Wright 3643 has received a certificate of achievement
