3568 has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching Crafting for earning an intermediate level Buttoned Up badge I really enjoyed making my button bracelet I used supplies from the jewelry making dept at my local craft store I purchased a bracelet some small rings and the buttons I opened the rings and slipped them into the button holes then used a small pliers to close the rings again I set up a blue and brown pattern and enjoyed watching my bracelet grow into a nice piece of jewelry I really enjoy wearing my bracelet and when I do someone always comments on it I have arthritis so struggled to pinch the rings so they would not reopen but as the piece grew so did my need to finish it I plan of making some more of these bracelets to give as gifts I want to use buttons from my stash for these gifts MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jun 25 2012 3 08 30 PM Thelma Adams Thelma 3568 has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning truck and van and a few around the house as they come in very handy when I want to pack things for when I m on the move Since I have a hard time remembering to take them into the stores I came up with this idea When I put my purse in a vehicle I place it in an empty reuseable bag an add more reuseable bags also When I get to the stores I grab my purse and the bags are right there This is a work in progress I am getting better at reusing the bags but if I forget I ask for paper and I never allow baggers to bag things like milk laundry detergent watermelons cereal boxes you get the idea When I m forced to use plastic I always recycle them as small wastebasket liners storage bags wet bathing suit bags ect MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jun 26 2012 3828 has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an intermediate level Birds badge I built a birdhouse and hung it right outside my front window so that I could watch it to see if there were any birds coming For a while only the robins would land on my birdhouse They were too big to actually use it though Finally I noticed a wren building a nest in the birdhouse It would come by in the morning and go back a forth for quite a while getting the nest going We actually built birdhouses and painted them as a family project so I have many in my yard full of birds now improve and be greener and better Since January I ve been making my own laundry detergent and will never go back We use homemade soap homemade cleaners and our home has and continues to keep finding more ways to go green or chemical free I even blogged about it in January on the Suburban Farmgirl Blog under the title Look at Me I m Chemical Free We also got rid of all plastic in the house We love it Our skin feels better from using all natural products we are NEVER sick and I am saving money by being green and doing much of what my grandparents did Sometimes the old ways are the best ways I am constantly finding ways to be green and not use chemicals plastics and to recycle in all aspects of my life MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jul 09 2012 11 product we buy only green organic or natural ones even my mascara is organic I make our deodorant and in the garden we do not use chemical fertilizers or pest control We use nothing toxic I now air dry our clothes on a drying rack or outside as much as possible In April I visited my dad and now they are doing more and more green things including making their own laundry detergent something my dad loves but did not believe would work Now they ve shared it with others too Last week I hosted my Sisterhood chapter and we all swapped green recipes for homemade products We live so much better and simpler I have discovered so many smart uses for re using things such as jars or re purposing items It s actually more convenient to make my own cleaners because I don t have to run out and buy more if I run out of glass cleaner for example I ve always got items like vinegar salt and the like on hand My house and laundry are fresher I am saving money and I am re using things the

our energy options Our home has propane heat electric AC propane cooking We cook primarily outside most of the summer to keep our propane usage down I also marked the calendar for the district meeting so we will be sure to attend and voice our opinions in the coop I found a great interactive tool on the coop website that takes you through the rooms of your home and by showing what we can do to save energy it also calculates how much we can save by doing these things My first changes in the house I will save 360 in a year and I m just getting started I knew some of them already but many were new and I will start on them right away This will be a great tool as I work toward the intermediate badge and start my journal about our energy usage around the home I have already followed the suggestions on the website that I could do right away lowering our water heater temp closing blinds earlier in the day to keep the Texas heat out adjusting our thermostat we are finding that we can keep it much warmer than we had been I had already changed some of our light bulbs to CFC but as I work through the journal keeping this next month I will hope to change at least one in each room this month Some of what I am saving in other areas can be spent on upgrading our light bulbs MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jul 09 2012 4 06 13 PM Connie Cowan Carp hen try badge I decided for this badge to install some shelves along the top of a storage closet to improve how I could utilize the space I had my books stacked two deep in a bookshelf which let them fit but it was harder to find a specific book that way I also read Dare to Repair This gave me many more projects to work on As I read each chapter I naturally had to decide if it applied to my house and did I need to fix whatever I was reading about The shelves are great By installing them I managed to get all my books out of the bookshelf I did have to go back to the store to get more shelves once because I had more books that I thought The bookshelf now is available to hold our linens which were formerly stacked on the floor The storage closet is only four feet tall or so and I have to climb into it to get anything out so having it organized definitely helps MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jul 27 2012 12 01 50 PM Emily Race Simply actually have any nearby I do have a great family so hopefully they can fill in We went camping for two nights No electronics we were in our 1994 trailer but nothing fancy I do hope to make it a little more on the gleaming side of things soon We hiked looking for flowers and teaching our daughters the names of the flowers We tried fishing but the water was too fast and high still We had campfires and cooked dinners and of course s mores over the fire The best part of the trip was when we showed our daughters a flower that is fairly rare here called a fairy slipper Of course our five year old said Where is the other one it took me a second then I realized what she meant Luckily the fairy that had worn them left one nearby When she saw a second one our daughter decided fairies were pretty lazy not placing their slippers near each other Then decided that this area was their home while another spot she found was the fairies s garden We had such fun looking for evidence of fairies and their slippers for the rest of the trip We even found enough Morrell mushrooms for a great side dish of sautéed mushrooms It couldn t have been better enjoying nature and showing our children what is really great in life MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jul 27 2012 12 02 47 PM Emily Race Simply Satisfied 3591 has received a certificate of achievement websites for heirloom seeds that I thought could manage to grow in our quick summer Then I spent a little money and got a little dirty I think I planted around 80 heirlooms this spring A little more than required but I didn t see why more was a bad thing so I switched over pretty much whole heartedly The radishes were great The carrots are growing well but not ready yet The heirloom tomato plants are currently outgrowing the regular old tomatoes The bush beans got planted a little early so they had a setback with a few hard frosts but seem to be keeping up with a second planting we did just in case The lettuce is great and I am hoping a second crop growing in the shade will succeed for a little later and not get too hot So far a great success I am coaxing my yellow cucumbers along it they just looked so much prettier than the regular old cukes that I had to try them MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jul 27 2012 12 04 03 PM Jennifer Mackey Jen It Together badge After trying to store some leftovers and having not one lid for the bowls I had I was ready to clean out again the plastic ware bins I ve been wanting to get a Pyrex set and as luck would have it they were on sale and I had an extra coupon to apply to the purchase So I put everything that was plastic and didn t have a matching lid in the recycle bin took the matching ones to my mom and bought my Pyrex set It turned out great I m really happy that there is enough space to hold my 9x13 dishes as well It s a bit noiser than the plastic was when you close and open the bins but I m much happier with it 2 more awesome bits if the lid is MIA at least plastic wrap or foil will stick to the glass AND I don t have to pull out another bowl to heat up leftovers So I save on dishes to wash My husband is the official dishwasher of our home so he likes that MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Jul 31 2012 2 21 36 PM Ruth Ann Kutemier ruthie 218
