birds making a wish list of birds I d like to observe in the wild here I started by finding and printing a complete list of birds found in California Then I spent almost three hours using this list in conjunction with National Geographic s Field Guide to the Birds of Western North America I d find species that are native to my area read the description on their plumage habitat calls As I went along I hand wrote a list of birds I d like to spot identify in the wild I ended up with four pages over 100 birds I can t wait to complete the next two levels to this badge as I build some backyard habitats and plan bird watching excursions to start seeing birds on my wish list MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Aug 13 2012 10 34 18 AM Thelma in them No particular photographer s work was of interest to me What I do like is Mary Jane s photos photos from country magazines calendar photos and photos taken by local artists This past 3 months I have been learning how to get the most out of my new Nikon by taking over 400 pictures not all of them keepers If you look on pages 322 325 of farmgirls over 50 chat you can see 10 of my pictures Instead of finding a book on photography I studied my camera manual watched a Nikon CD and took notes at the county fair for the 4H photography judge I think that I have come a long way and learned a lot this summer Portraits are my least desirable subjects but I love outside shots of birds flowers and rural Iowa shots MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Aug involving the use of bean bags One day I was visiting in a nursing home and realized that my mother in law was having trouble keeping her puzzle book open I want home and made her and her friends some long slender beanbags to hold open their pages I added small pockets where they could keep a small pen or some tissues While I was at it I made 4 small beanbags for my grandchildren to use when we go on vacation They will come in handy for roadside travel breaks The nursing home patients loved their gifts I am glad that I took the time to make the bags MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane drought conditions across the United States it probably wasn t the best year to try anything new like Heirloom Seeds I planted varieties of cucumbers tomatoes corn and a rose bush The cucumbers are terrific They have good flavor and I had plenty of cukes for fresh eating and canning I m not sure about the tomatoes They are producing small sized fruit that doesn t have much flavor Also I think they may have crossed with my regular tomatoes as I planted them in the same area None of my corn varities was exceptional due to the high heat and lack of rain The rose bush has bloomed all summer The first blooms were dissapointing but as summer moved slowely along the blooms improved I am dissapointed that they have no odor I got the book Gardening with Heirloom Seeds by Lynn Coulter I really enjoyed looking through this book If I continue working with Heirlooms I will purchase the book in the future as it is packed with solid information I feel that I need to try again next year I have the requirements for the Beginner Level Since I sew and have a few sewing kits around already I wanted this sewing basket to be very fun and very personal By the time I sat down to assemble my kit I knew exactly what I wanted to do I have a little picnic basket that used to hold a miniature porcelain tea set I received for Christmas one year as a little girl probably when I was 7 or 8 It s the perfect size to house my sewing kit and has lots of charm and sentimental value After I pulled that out I went to making my pinkeep just for this basket Using a remnant of fabric that I ve been stashing for a couple years love the print but haven t had the perfect small project for it before this I used antique thread and antique floss to create the basic pincushion I embellished it with a yo yo and a button from my husband s grandmother s stash Then I decided the straight pins going into the kit needed some love too using a hot glue gun I attached swarovski crystals pearls and heart shaped beads to the tops of the pins The inspiration for those were vintage hat pins Finally I started filling my basket with the pinkeep pins an array of vintage thread on wooden spools scissors buttons tape measure thimble safety pins needles and needle threader I love the finished kit It is personal charming and is perfect for carrying along for a stitching project on the go It has the elements of an heirloom kit something I d be proud to hand on to my future daughters MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Aug 14 2012 4 36 00 PM Nancy Witko in Stitching Crafting for earning a beginner level Nellie Will do badge This july I worked over 75 hours making a costume for a comic convention in Chicago I learned a lot about patterns and sewing including how to alter patterns to make what you want The costume only used part of a pattern and the rest of it my step mother who is teaching me how to sew and I made the rest by looking at images and a diagram The costume was of Qourra from Tron Legacy and it was complete with wig boots identity disc and EL lights The costume was amazing We finished it right before comic con and I had a lot of generated interest from other comic con goers I entered it into the costume contest but I did not win but that is alright because I am very proud of what I created I met another Tron character at the comic con and we exchanged numbers he said that he had a lot of knowledge that he would like to share with me and I want to help him with his next costume MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts our local Wild Birds Unlimited store sponsored a birdwalk with Georgann Schmalz an expert birder She was so good that she could tell you which birds were making which sounds in the forest Because there was a front coming in this afternoon we didn t see many of the birds but we sure heard them Many were fall migrants coming through She said it is perfectly legal to count a bird if you only hear it and don t see it Therefore I heard or saw white eyed vireo catbird Canada geese yellow warbler titmouse Carolina wren blue jay bunting field sparrow crow chicadee house finch goldfinch mocking bird brown thrasher Eastern towhee chipping sparrow red shouldered hawk and my favorite of all hummingbirds The picture is from my own front yard MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA project was started last October after I took a dying class at a local yarn shop I purchased some wool yarn from the store and started making some slippers to felt The project got put aside for other things but I finally picked it back up and finished knitting the slippers It took me awhile to figure out how to sew them together but I finally did It took over 25 hours to finish especially if you count how many times I had to wash and dry them in order to get them to felt They still are a little bit big on me but I have dried them with all sorts of things like denim and jackets with metal buckles to agitate them more Since I will probably be wearing them with socks during the winter they should fit me just fine by then MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 the beginner project in scrap booking I learned about acid free paper vellum and lignan and used them in that project This time I used a different tactic for my scrap book Unfortunately I learned the hard way about how pictures degrade as listed in the book Saving Stuff I just got it from the library and read it today That s why I decided to go digital with all of my family photos A picture of my grandmother s family in the early 1900s not only faded but stuck to the glass of the picture frame I was horrified when I tried to take it out of the frame and it tore Thankfully I had made copies of all the old pictures and had given them to both of my siblings When I called my sister to get her to send me the copy so I could re do it she couldn t find it Ditto with my brother One of my women s magazines had a special with Shutterfly where you could get a 20 page book online for free So I took a photocopy I had made of the lost picture I did a genealogy back in 1989 and photocopied everything and put it plus all of the other family photos in a digital scrapbook It actually came out better with more detail that way I put in dates of birth marriages and deaths as well as where everybody was born and where they died I told the story of each photo in relation to me so that the younger set nieces and nephews will have a family history that they hopefully will not lose My sister found the missing picture finally after I had done all of this I put flowers and other embellishments in my copy of it and I will get another one for my brother to give to them as Christmas presents this year I hope that it will become a treasured heirloom for them some day MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Sep 17 2012 1 32 27 PM Barbara Roberts name from a place called Le Perche which is an old province about 50 miles southwest of Paris What was needed in the time was a horse that could trot from 7 to 10 miles per hour and had the endurance to do it day in and day out Cities in France were growing and omnibuses were the public transport of the day Thousands of omnibus horses were called for in Paris and other French cities The job called for a little heavier horse the breeders of the Le Perche altered their local breed enough to do the job At the same time faster and stronger horses were replacing oxen in agriculture and there was a need for draft horses to move large loads from docks and railheads The initial importation s of French stock to the U S was around 1839 The Percheron quickly became America s favorite horse In the 1880 s almost 5 000 stallions and over 2 500 mares were imported to the U S mostly from Le Perche Over 70 of the purebred draft horses in America were Percherons at this time Most of the farmers were still loyal to the horse as the most economical source of farm power and during the great depression the draft horse made a dramatic comeback Corn was cheap and since farmers were broke they couldn t afford to purchase gasoline In 1937 the number of percheron horses reached 4 611 When the war began gasoline became plentiful so the use of drafters declined The low point in Percheron registrations came in 1954 when just 85 head was recorded A handful of people dedicated to the breed were unwilling to relinquish their equine heritage which in turn has kept the Percheron alive They were aided in this by the thousands of Amish farmers throughout the country who stuck with the draft horse as their source of motive power I have found out a lot about the Percheron horse breed My daughters mare Niki is such a gentle horse and definately build for working I checked out The Soul of a Horse by Joe Camp from my local library I also went to the web site I love the pictures of his horses Joe seemed to have such a love of horses He reminded me of how much love horses can give when they trust I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased his book Beginning Ground Work for my daughter as a Christmas gift for this year It was her Percheran horse that I researched the origins on MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Sep 20 2012 2 52 19 PM Linda Van
