2013 5 15 38 PM Susan Roby 5505 has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Level Community Service Merit Badge I have begun a Community Service Journal It helps when we need to fill out a monthly report to send to state headquarters The three organizations I considered are Salvation Army St Vincent de Paul and Fish I chose the Salvation Army It is run out of the church I attend and is all volunteer and free I spend eighteen hours per week volunteering My job is to answer the phone and returning messages People regularly cannot pay their utility bills their mortgage payments or rent and cannot afford medication It is my job to grant vouchers for all or part of the money needed There are times when we need to find shelter for homeless people such as with the man who started walking from north of San Francisco and is attempting to walk to Maine and then return to California all in the name of Jesus So many people in our town do not even realize there are homeless people in the area and are glad to help Many people including some who we have helped do bring in donations Some bring in monetary donations all of which is a huge help MaryJane together a beginners sewing kit It seemed as if I have been wanting to learn how to sew for quite sometime now by the look of a disheveled small wicker basket bursting with sewing items in it and a brand new sewing machine that was still in the box after a couple of years I began taking everything out of the wicker basket and lo and behold I had everything I needed for this merit badge excluding a homemade pin keeper All the sewing items could not be kept in the wicker basket so I took an old craft box I had and turned into an organized sewing kit To make my pin keeper I used and old small jewelry bag stuffed it with cotton balls and zipped it up I am so pleased with the outcome Having an organized sewing kit puts a smile on my face I have everything I need in one spot and I m ready to Yavonne Tudisco pokey220 5243 has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Level Gaining Ground Merit Badge When my husband and I moved into our new home one of the first things I did was start a compost heap I chose a spot next to the fence and close to my future garden For over 2 years I have been putting my bucket of kitchen scraps veggie egg shells and coffee grinds along with the landscapers grass clippings and dried leaves into the compost heap This past year I realized the roots of the Palm trees like the compost heap so much I built a compost bin I have never calculated how much compost dirt I ve collected and used but I have enjoyed using this rich dirt in the garden beds and seeing more worms in the soil The first time I saw and heard about vermicomposting was in NYC 1995 I went to a client s apartment and she showed me her small handmade plastic worm bin I was fascinated how neat to throw a banana peel into the bin and eventually it would end up being worm castings I was hooked and wanted a worm bin ever since That dream came true last August I bought a three tray worm bin and started off with 100 worms Since then I have added 200 more worms and in total have harvested 15 20 gallons of worm castings I feed the worms with eggshells and coffee grinds I collect from Mother Earth Café and veggie pulp from the local juice bar I just finished reading Amy Stewart s book The Earth Moved I sure am glad it was a suggested reading because I felt as if I met a kindred spirit Like Amy I care for my worms as if they are apart of my family I check on them daily I feed them I make sure their home is comfortable and even moved them inside for the summer because of the heat I have since discovered hopefully a remedy to help cool them off next summer by freezing water bottles and putting them in the bin Reading The Earth Moved also helped answer a few questions I had Like what are those microscopic white dots that seem to move I thought they might be little worms but no they are Springtails I questioned the timing of rotating my trays or why are the worms going to the bottom of the bin or why they sometimes crawled to the top I found all my answers in Amy s book In South Florida where I live we have been having a major problem with spiraling white fly not to mention other bug invaders However these spiraling white flies eat everything in sight At first they were identified on Ficus trees but I found out they have no mercy and attack pretty much every living plant including my huge Traveling Palms My personal belief they are mutated bugs from the years of depleted soil from fertilizer and pest sprays Every 2 weeks I d get out a 6ft ladder to spray organic solutions soaps and other concoctions At one point I broke down and used chemicals Nothing was working My trees were black dying and still infested One day I was reading about worm tea and the article stated it was good for getting rid of the white fly I was so excited because I dislike using chemicals at the core of my being and not to mention the labor involved Immediately I made my first batch and was absolutely amazed by the results Within a week after spraying worm tea not even spraying the entire tree because they are quite large my palm trees came back to life healthier then ever The black was gone no infestation and they are green and healthy I only wish I would have taken a before picture of the dying palms all black and lifeless to have visual proof of the life giving power of worm tea I can also say the application lasted over 8 months WOW MaryJane Farmgirl 1 Plowin Thru giving aprons a good wrap for 45 years and counting MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Dec 28 2013 2 29 28 PM means stray or feral animal rather than being a particular breed Mustangs are as mutt as the American people are in terms of having a diverse genetic background The Appaloosa breed came of the this collection of genetics developed by the tribe most considered master horse breeders the Nez Perce I have loved animals since I was a child and still have a love affair with them especially horses Having my feelings confirmed about animals was gratifying I found the differences between the needs of the predator and the prey to be significant and telling I will be more conscious in using this information to develop my relationships with the already in my life and those yet to come MaryJane Farmgirl 1 Plowin Thru giving aprons a good wrap for 45 years and counting MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 movies not kid friendly were not watched during the time they were there and awake Eating in front of the TV is a bad habit and should be stopped The 5 hours I just watched were spent seeing a new movie with the kids and ringing in the new year I might try this again when we do not have a holiday Of all the members in our house I watch the average amount my daughter watches a lot less and my partner watches a lot more football hockey auto racing We saw a show on the spice vanilla Vanilla is native to Mexico where a very tiny bee that pollinates the plant exists When a young black boy figured out how to pollinate the plant by hand vanilla production began in other parts of the world Vanilla production is dropping off in Mexico because there is not as much demand for the product Personally I will look for vanilla produced in Mexico so as to no only get a very high quality product but also support native agriculture Very interesting and informative show For New Year s Eve we watched 80 s movies then rang in the new year with our local channel Wonderful fireworks show We are working to watch less television already got rid of paid television and use only an antenna now and Camp s book first Unfortunately the closest horse rescues in our area are at least 2 hours away something that we cannot do at this time I wish that they were closer so I could physically help One horse rescue in our area accepts financial donations and is involved with Good Search search engine so I am able to help out a little bit financially hopefully more in the future MaryJane Farmgirl 1 achievement in Stitching Crafting for earning a Beginner Level Origami Merit Badge I hadn t known the history of origami except that it was Japanese in origin Turns out it was used by the small percentage of people for religious purposes As paper became more widely used the art of origami became more practiced While we typically think of it as Japanese Europeans were also creating with folded paper dating back to the 12th century Around 1950 the folding patterns for several shapes was published and it was the advent of origami taking on a more global following I like this cultural history so this was interesting to research I have done origami in the past with my oldest daughter when she was fascinated by Japan but we hadn t done it in several years I made a canoe for the merit badge which was fairly easy except for the very last fold which didn t fold smoothly But the correct shape turned out in the end MaryJane Farmgirl 1 Plowin Thru giving aprons a good wrap for 45 years Stitching Crafting for earning an Expert Level Knitting Merit Badge Having already completed the beginner and intermediate levels of the Knitting badge I moved forward with the expert level Knitting socks with a heel has been goal of mine for over 3 years Because socks require knitting on 4 needles I decided to start the process with making thick tube socks with a size 8 needle and thick yarn It was hard enough to keep the pattern on the needles and not drop stitches because the needles all feel so cumbersome at first The socks did turn out see black pink pair in photo well and are good for wearing in boots or tennis shoes Next I took a knitting class on how to knit socks with the heel gusset The project used a sport weight wool blend with a 6 needle set The heel part proved to be challenging but I eventually got it right My completed pair are the orange brown socks Currently I am working with 6 needles and acrylic yarn on the same pattern but a shorter sock see purple green sock My goal is to next make a pair of short cotton weight socks on a 2 needle for the spring and summer My third project was to learn how to knit and felt a project I followed a pattern shared on the MJF Connection by Teri at White Sheep Farm using 11 needles and Lite lopi 100 wool from Iceland You knit the slippers to be huge and then felt them in the washer using hot soapy water until the measure the correct size I had to felt mine for 10 minutes to get the correct size The slippers are the kelley free hot pink ones shown I am very please with all of my projects It was fun learning new stitches techniques and making my knitting better Each project built on the skill set and now I feel like I have achieved so much from the experience I have put in well over 50 hours learning how to work on knitting with 4 needles and felting In addition last September I joined a knitting group that meets each week While I have not taught 5 people how to knit I have helped others get started with circular needles correct dropped stitches and figure out a yarn gauge My next goal is to take this class on spinning wool with a small hand held tool The class is on February 20 and I hope to make the class The class costs 60 dollars and will be an investment in time and money But I would love to take plain roving spin it into a chunky wool dye it with an plant dye that I make and then knit it into something to wear MaryJane Farmgirl 1 Plowin Thru giving aprons a good wrap for 45 years and counting MaryJane Queen Bee 10657 Posts MaryJane Moscow Idaho USA 10657 Posts Posted Feb 07 2014 4 29 20 PM carbon dioxide which supports life as we know it and protects us from the sun s radiation The atmosphere is held in place by our gravity and atmospheric temperature The higher the temperature of our atmosphere the more movement there is of the different molecules which creates a circulation of the atmosphere a contributing factor in any regions weather Atmospheric pressure is the force applied by the surrounding gases A high pressure system is when the pressure in the region is higher than the surrounding area I high pressure system typically bring clear skies more extreme warm and cold temperatures and broader temperature fluctuations between night and day A low pressure system is when is when the pressure in a region is lower than the surrounding area A low pressure system typically comes in with winds and moister air masses The greater the pressure difference between the high and the low the stronger the winds will be Hurricanes and tornadoes are two products of low pressure systems A barometer is an instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure Short term changes in the weather can be forecast based on the atmospheric pressure tendencies and changes My head and my joints often feel the changes in the weather long before any changes is seen I have lived in the southern states the northern states and Europe The weather differs greatly depending on the region the distance from the equator and the distance and direction from major bodies of water learning the details of the different types of systems helped to explain what my body already know Beginner Level Weather Merit Badge Weather is the state of the Atmosphere to the degree that it is hot or cold wet or dry calm or stormy clear or cloudy Most weather phenomena occur in the troposphere just below the stratosphere Weather general refers to day to day temperature and precipitation activity Weather occurs primarily due to air pressure temperature and moisture differences between one place and another Low pressure system is a region in the atmosphere where air is rising it is developed when air get hot and moist compared to the surrounding air High pressure is a region in the atmosphere where the air is sinking High pressure systems have a longer atmospheric lifetime compared to lower pressure systems A Barometer is a scientific instrument used in meteorology to measure atmospheric pressure Pressure tendency can forecast short term changes in the weather Wind is caused because the sun heats the planet differently and over vast areas As a place warms up the air expands causing a pressure change Wind is simple high pressure air moving towards a low pressure region to balance things out Air masses are defined simply as uniform bodies of air Air mass is a large body of air that has similar temperatures and moisture properties throughout A Front is a place where two air masses meet Fronts extend both horizontal and vertical Fronts and air masses contribute to weather Fronts rarely collide but they do overtake the proceeding front When they meet they provoke the various types of weather Researching all this has given me more insight on understanding what the weather man talks about and why he explains about the low and high pressure the warm and cool fronts and how it effects our weather This was all a very helpful badge to earn MaryJane Farmgirl 1 holiday theme for some time so I decided to update my blog and add some additional features In order to do so I had to do some research on how to do some basic coding on the site Blogger After researching how to add additional features I added some options on my site that now connect my blog to both my Pinterest and Facebook accounts I also utilized a site that offers free backgrounds and redid my entire template so I now have a new background header and font options for various portions of my blog One of the hardest options was adding a floating Pin It button that will show up over all my photos and link them directly to Pinterest Last but not least I was not happy that my links to YouTube were too large to fit nicely into my blog so I found out how to change the size in the embedded code I normally copy from YouTube before posting them to my content These are all things my daughter had been promising to do for me and hadn t So the fact that I did this all on my own is super exciting for me I called her daily to share my progress as well I also submitted my site to GirlGab today to be linked up with the others If you d like to check it out here is the link http
