  • Fixing the Broken Textbook Market | MASSPIRG Students
Nearly half of all students surveyed said that the cost of textbooks impacted how many which classes they took each semester Students attend college seeking job preparation and or degree attainment Careful course selection is often necessary in order to yield the results that a student is seeking within the timeframe they are prepared to study It is especially concerning that this process may be being undermined by high textbook costs 3 Students want alternatives expressing support for textbooks that are available free online and buying a hard copy is optional 82 of students felt they would do significantly better in a course if the textbook was available free online and buying a hard copy was optional This is exactly how open textbooks are designed Not only is the open textbook an ideal alternative to a traditional textbook from a student point of view but it is the only product in the marketplace that can directly challenge the high prices that publishers charge for new editions These high prices which outpace inflation underpin the entire textbook marketplace and drive market conditions for other alternatives such as the used book and rental markets Overall this study demonstrates that despite recent steps forward in the marketplace high textbook costs will continue to be a problem for students unless the cost of high priced new editions of college textbooks comes down Related issues Make Textbooks Affordable About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Chapters Berkshire Community College Fitchburg State University Holyoke Community College Mass College of Liberal Arts MassBay Community College Middlesex Community College North Shore Community College Salem State University UMass Amherst UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth UMass Lowell Westfield State University Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a PIRG Chapter Full Time Jobs Campaigns Make Textbooks Affordable 100

  • New Report Shows Bay Staters Are Driving Less: Bay Staters’ Driving Is Down 4.03% Percent, Ahead of National Trend | MASSPIRG Students
among Millennials The states with the biggest reductions in driving miles generally were not the states hit hardest by the economic downturn The majority almost three quarters of the states where per person driving miles declined more quickly than the national average actually saw smaller increases in unemployment compared to the rest of the nation We were surprised to see how widespread this trend was across the country We expected that perhaps driving was declining mostly in the more populous states but the research revealed that driving is on the decline in almost every state said Phineas Baxandall a Senior Analyst at MASSPIRG and primary author of the report Massachusetts transportation system is antiquated and has gone underfunded for decades If we are to build a modern transportation system our limited tax dollars and political capital must be redirected to support projects which improve public transportation Governor Michael Dukakis offered this assessment The MASSPIRG study now confirms what has been apparent to many of us for some time people are sick and tired of wasting their time in traffic and want to live in communities that are close to their work with excellent public transportation systems Fortunately Greater Boston already has a public transportation system that is the envy of most of the other major cities in the country Our job now is to manage it well and continue to make the kinds of investments in it that will make it even better and more accessible to all of our citizens light rail through Somerville commuter rail to southeastern Massachusetts and building the North South rail link that will finally connect North and South Stations by rail Given these trends we need to press the reset button on our transportation policy said Wasielewski Just because past transportation investments overwhelmingly went
