  • How To Save Money on Textbooks | MASSPIRG Students
free Some of the best one are Project Gutenberg that offers over thirty eight thousand free e books Bartleby that is not only great for free texts but it also a great reference site There are also applications that can be used not only on a computer but also on a smart phone if you have one Google Books Kindle or Nook all of which offer a good selection of free classics If you have a Kindle or a Kindle App you should also check out Lendle me for books that are not available for free it s kind of like a library for Kindle books that offers a good amount of selections that you can borrow for up to two weeks There is also a website called Boundlessnow com which will create an alternate text based on the textbook you need for free It also has a bunch of other cool features like highlighting and summaries but can only be accessed online If you can t find what you re looking for free there s another option get it for a cheaper price One easy solution is to split the price with a friend if the two of you have class together Just make sure to agree on what happens with the book afterwards Or buy them used at the textbook store The first two good places to check online are Amazon Marketplace also offers rent and Ebay Be sure to check the prices not right before school but about a week or so into school Prices will drop dramatically because during the start of the school people are trying to desperately sell off their old textbooks You can also check out Half com or BetterWorldBooks com offers free shipping worldwide Just remember to factor in the price for shipping and handling and compare how much it would cost if you bought a used or even new edition at the store Another way to get cheap textbooks is to rent them That way you ll pay much less than the original price just remember to return them on time You can rent books at the Textbook Annex though not all of them are up for rent There are also several websites that offer a good selection of textbooks for reasonable prices such as TextbookRevolt com which is good for math science business or management courses is good for multiple subjects but it s better for more expensive texts because some of the cheaper books come out costing just as much as new purchased edition There is also CourseSmart com offers a great selection for all subjects and lets you compare prices Valorebooks com offers cheap books for rent and for sale they will also pay for the shipment both when you buy rent and sell If you aren t sure about renting or buying you can swap books See if your college or major department holds swapping events sometime during the semester UMass has its own textbook swap which
