and credit unions a finding that has also been obtained by others ii While some big banks have raised fees and restricted or eliminated free checking some still provide it especially with a regular direct deposit Recommendations For Regulators A more detailed list occurs later in the report The new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has an important opportunity to make markets work better for consumers and good actors in the marketplace it should make bank account fee disclosures more transparent by enforcing the current law and improving the law s disclosure requirements The CFPB should extend the requirements of the Truth In Savings Act to the Internet It should require that banks post fees in a searchable web format e g xml or similar to encourage the establishment of local online shopping guides by community groups The CFPB should require that the most important savings and checking disclosures required by the Act be provided prominently in a tabular format such as the Schumer Box required for credit card disclosures For Consumers A more detailed list occurs later in the report Review your bank statements and count your fees In addition to ATM surcharges you are likely paying your own bank an off us ATM fee that only appears on your statement whenever you use another owner s ATM Examine how many fees you pay Shop around Look for better accounts Bank at a credit union not at a bank Credit unions are member owned lower cost alternatives to banks and often offer the same variety of services It is easier to qualify for membership than most consumers think See for example Big Banks Bigger Fees 1999 and 2008 Double ATM Fees Triple Trouble 2001 The Campus Credit Card Trap 1998 and 2008 ii A financial reporter had similar results recently

reduce our publicly held debt to GDP ratio to a more sustainable level of 60 percent While our organizations have often differed about the proper regulatory scope of government and a host of tax policies we are united in the belief that we spend far too much money on ineffective programs that do not serve the best interests of the American people The cuts deal with specific reforms to entitlement programs defense spending wasteful subsidies and a broad range of discretionary items of a smaller scale While these proposals won t get us all the way there it is a start that could establish some common ground and make government more accountable in the process Some of the suggestions are aimed at procedural improvements like collecting errant payments for Supplemental Security Income or housing subsidies Others seek to eliminate programs that are wasteful or unnecessary like the Market Access Program which helps some of the most profitable companies in the world advertise their products abroad Every item on the list includes a five year savings estimate for the Commission s 2015 target Those estimates are backed up by authoritative official sources such as the Congressional Budget Office Government Accountability Office Joint Committee on Taxation or the Office of Management and Budget as well as bipartisan panels and audit agencies The recommendations are specific detailed and actionable items that Congress could pursue right now to reduce spending About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Chapters Berkshire Community College Fitchburg State University Holyoke Community College Mass College of Liberal Arts MassBay Community College Middlesex Community College North Shore Community College Salem State University UMass Amherst UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth UMass Lowell Westfield State University Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a PIRG Chapter Full Time Jobs Campaigns Make
