debt is in safe lower interest federal loans a significant amount is in private loans that can carry interest rates of over 18 percent In fact due to aggressive marketing nearly 3 million American students took out private loans last year up from less than 1 million just four years before Since federal loans are lower interest and have more borrower protections taking out unnecessary private loans for college is like putting tuition on a high interest credit card that students can t pay off for years And like credit cards private loans carry costly penalties and fees and are marketed heavily to students regardless of need resulting in unnecessary and damaging levels of expensive debt Unfortunately unlike with credit cards there has been no Credit Card Holder s Bill of Rights for student loans to reign in the worst abuses in the private loan market This absence of basic consumer protections is why American students need a new consumer watchdog About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Chapters Berkshire Community College Fitchburg State University Holyoke Community College Mass College of Liberal Arts MassBay Community College Middlesex Community College North Shore Community College Salem State University UMass Amherst UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth UMass Lowell Westfield State University Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a PIRG Chapter Full Time Jobs Campaigns Make Textbooks Affordable 100 Renewable Energy Stop Overuse of Antibiotics Get Big Money out of Politics New Voters Project Hunger and Homelessness Newsroom Latest Updates Blog News Releases PIRG in the News Reports DONATE Internships Work on important issues learn valuable skills get hands on experience and make a difference Get Info Students in Action Like Us Follow Us RSS Contact Reports by Campaign New Voters Project Make Textbooks Affordable Make Textbooks Affordable 100 Renewable Energy

  • Congress Moves to Cut Textbook Costs in Landmark Bill | MASSPIRG Students
which textbook the consumer students must buy Since professors assign the textbooks best for their courses students must purchase their books regardless of cost Student PIRG research found that publishers further exacerbate this problem by withholding price information from professors The bill reverses this problem by requiring publishers to put price information on the table so professors can consider costs on behalf of students The bill contains two additional provisions that give students more options as consumers First it requires publishers to sell all textbook bundles as individual books and supplemental materials PIRG research identified bundling as one of the main practices publishers use to drive up costs Second the bill asks colleges to inform students which textbooks they need a full semester early That way students will have time to shop around for the best deals The textbooks legislation was contained in the larger Higher Education Opportunity Act H R 4137 which passed today 380 49 in the House and 83 8 in the Senate The bill will now proceed to the President to be signed into law The textbooks provisions go into effect July 1 2010 To download a full analysis of the provision visit http www studentpirgs org resources textbook price disclosure law About the Student PIRGs The Student Public Interest Research Groups is a national network of non profit non partisan student advocacy groups that work on public interest issues pertaining to the environment consumer protection and government reform About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Chapters Berkshire Community College Fitchburg State University Holyoke Community College Mass College of Liberal Arts MassBay Community College Middlesex Community College North Shore Community College Salem State University UMass Amherst UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth UMass Lowell Westfield State University Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a
