  • SENATE PASSES ELECTION MODERNIZATION BILL | MASSPIRG Students
Day registration and 14 states have adopted pre registration of teens age varies With a particular focus on young voters MASSPIRG and Mass Student PIRG together have registered over 50 000 new voters in Massachusetts over the course of the past six statewide elections Most of those new voters were between the ages of 18 and 24 a cohort which study after study shows are more likely to become lifelong voters if they start young That said the barriers to young people engaging in their franchise like still requiring paper registration are significant The online registration provision as passed by both the house and the senate would go a very long way towards getting youth to exercise this most basic democratic right Yet to truly get our elections into the 21st century we need to adopt all the reforms the senate overwhelmingly passed The push for this bill was led by the Election Modernization Coalition a robust alliance comprised of Common Cause Massachusetts League of Women Voters Massachusetts MassVOTE ACLU of Massachusetts MASSPIRG Progressive Massachusetts the MIRA Coalition and others New Voters Project Related topics Democracy About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Chapters Berkshire Community College Fitchburg State University Holyoke Community College Mass College of Liberal Arts MassBay Community College Middlesex Community College North Shore Community College Salem State University UMass Amherst UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth UMass Lowell Westfield State University Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a PIRG Chapter Full Time Jobs Campaigns Make Textbooks Affordable 100 Renewable Energy Stop Overuse of Antibiotics Get Big Money out of Politics New Voters Project Hunger and Homelessness Newsroom Latest Updates Blog News Releases PIRG in the News Reports DONATE Internships Work on important issues learn valuable skills get hands on experience and make a difference Get

country s largest farming operations mainly to grow just a few commodity crops including corn and soybeans Among other uses food manufacturers process these crops into additives like high fructose corn syrup and vegetable oils that provide a cheap dose of sweetness and fat to a wide variety of junk food products Shoveling cash at commodity crops also means we re subsidizing these unhealthy additives too continued Russo At a time when government spending is coming under increasing scrutiny it s time for Congress to get its priorities straight Among the report s key findings Between 1995 and 2010 16 9 billion in tax dollars subsidized four common food additives corn syrup high fructose corn syrup corn starch and soy oils better known as hydrogenated vegetable oils At 7 36 per taxpayer per year that would buy each taxpayer 19 Twinkies Outside of commodity crops other agricultural products receive very little in federal subsidies Since 1995 taxpayers spent only 262 million subsidizing apples which is the only significant federal subsidy of fresh fruits or vegetables Coming to 11 cents per taxpayer per year that would buy less than a quarter of a Red Delicious apple Childhood obesity rates have tripled over the last three decades with one in five kids aged 6 to 11 now obese Research shows that increased snacking is responsible for a significant portion of this increase The full report is available at the U S PIRG website About Us Our Leadership Our Mission Accomplishments Chapters Berkshire Community College Fitchburg State University Holyoke Community College Mass College of Liberal Arts MassBay Community College Middlesex Community College North Shore Community College Salem State University UMass Amherst UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth UMass Lowell Westfield State University Get Involved Take Action Volunteer on Campus Campus Internships Start a PIRG Chapter
