    MEDA365 SharePoint MEDA Master Photo Library Travel Tracker Email Print Gary Leis Gary Leis Member at Large Wellesley Ontario Gary Leis is President and CEO of Leis Pet Distributing Inc which distributes pet food and supplies to independent pet retailers across Eastern Canada Between the head office in Wellesley Ontario and a second location in Moncton New Brunswick Leis Pet employs 55 full and part time employees As a long time social and peace activist Gary has always struggled trying to justify feeding pets for a living but has found comfort in MEDA Belonging to an organization like MEDA meeting other business people and financially supporting the poorest of the poor in an entrepreneurial setting has given me a sense of social responsibility What better way to achieve world peace by meeting the basic needs of people around the world Gary was first introduced to MEDA through the local Waterloo chapter where he became a member of the local board for nine years and served six years as Board Chair As he approached retirement age he felt the need for a new challenge It was his belief in MEDA s mission coupled with his business experience that made it a natural fit As a new member to MEDA s Board Gary is looking forward to seeing firsthand MEDA s work during his upcoming visit to the GROW project in Ghana He strives to become an ambassador for MEDA sharing the good news story Gary says it s not only important to help people start businesses but also to complete the value chain from producer to the end user as MEDA does He added how rewarding it is to see their lives improve in a sustainable way My MEDA dollars are multiplied many times over by government and other funders The

    Learning Centre Policies Logos and Branding My MEDA My Communication Preferences My Giving History MEDA Staff Logins Website Login Logout MEDA365 E mail Login MEDA365 SharePoint MEDA Master Photo Library Travel Tracker Email Print Tim Penner Tim Penner Prairie U S Regional Director Harper Kansas Tim is president of Harper Industries which manufactures specialized agricultural industrial and turf products from flatbeds and hydraulics to bale loaders and all terrain mowers Tim got to know MEDA while serving with Mennonite Central Committee in Bolivia and says he was very impressed with how MEDA operated in economic development job creation and micro loans Ever since then economic development has been in his blood His children caught it too Son Daniel spent part of last year with MEDA Paraguay and daughter Jessica works with Plowsharing Crafts based in St Louis Tim and his wife Faith like to bring fellow employees to the annual MEDA convention That has been a lot of fun he says It s just amazing how often during the year those times together as a business group with spouses come up in conversation as people reflect on what they learned A MEDA investment club that former MEDA staffer Peter Wiebe helped start a dozen years ago still meets on the first Saturday of each month I don t think we ve ever missed a Saturday Tim says The group has invested in two MEDA entities Sarona and MicroVest Tim enjoys sports and reads widely Recently he and his brother planted native grasses and several hundred trees on their farm in Nebraska to create a wildlife habitat and return some of the land to its natural state Another hobby is the sister church relationship between his local congregation and a Mennonite church in Santa Cruz Bolivia About every other year there

    to Farmer MSCU Mutual Aid in Action Fundraise for MEDA AmazonSmile Donate while you shop Products Supporting MEDA Donate aeroplan miles Resources Publications The Marketplace Magazine Learning Centre Policies Logos and Branding My MEDA My Communication Preferences My Giving History MEDA Staff Logins Website Login Logout MEDA365 E mail Login MEDA365 SharePoint MEDA Master Photo Library Travel Tracker Email Print Bryce Bergey Bryce Bergey Northeast U S Regional Director Hatfield Pennsylvania Bryce is an investments officer with Univest Corporation of Pennsylvania Souderton Pa working with the Institutional Investments team to assist clients with corporate retirement plans He was recruited while a business administration and economics student at Eastern Mennonite University Ken Hochstetler a senior Univest executive and MEDA past board member came to EMU and invited Bryce to become a corporate management trainee at Univest Bryce agreed and ended up staying When he succeeded Hochstetler on the MEDA board at 25 its youngest director he continued a decades long tradition of Univest involvement with MEDA Bryce attended local chapter meetings in Harrisonburg Va and attended a number of MEDA conventions while a student I believe in the power of the markets and the power of people he says MEDA uses the best of both of these to provide new business solutions to entrepreneurs around the world He s also likes MEDA s first to market track record which combined with MEDA s faith emphasis allows for a powerful platform that reaches out to millions of families This is also exciting because it allows MEDA to be flexible to adjust to new market conditions Entrepreneurial thinking can lead to new opportunities for our stakeholders Work ranks high as a hobby for Bryce but he rounds it out with volleyball golf and skiing He and his wife Maureen absolutely love to travel

    miles Resources Publications The Marketplace Magazine Learning Centre Policies Logos and Branding My MEDA My Communication Preferences My Giving History MEDA Staff Logins Website Login Logout MEDA365 E mail Login MEDA365 SharePoint MEDA Master Photo Library Travel Tracker Email Print Dale Beachey Dale Beachey Secretary Gulf States U S Regional Director Sarasota Florida Now retired Dale Beachey spent 34 years as Chief Financial Officer at the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System He and his wife Verda who is also retired after a career in insurance are a MEDA rarity they ve both served on its board of directors Dale for the past three years and Verda for nine Dale is a big fan of MEDA s agile focus on solutions to poverty I like the way MEDA is constantly innovating and coming up with new ways to combat poverty he says I like the fact that they re disciplined enough to go in set something up that s sustainable and then leave that in local hands and move on to the next challenge Not many organizations would have the discipline to do that As a longtime board couple Dale and Verda have enjoyed visiting MEDA s work in Paraguay Nicaragua and Tanzania as well as TourMagination trips that touched on MEDA projects in Romania and Egypt Dale has also volunteered his financial skills on internal audits of MEDA projects in Nicaragua and Tanzania That s always been a highlight to get out and see the projects in greater depth and get to meet the people we re impacting he says Bedsides traveling Dale likes reading and playing several games of golf a week In the summer he and Verda head north to Elkhart Indiana to visit their two daughters and six grandchildren ages 3 to 16 Like many doting grandparents

    Centre Policies Logos and Branding My MEDA My Communication Preferences My Giving History MEDA Staff Logins Website Login Logout MEDA365 E mail Login MEDA365 SharePoint MEDA Master Photo Library Travel Tracker Email Print Kevin Dorsing Kevin Dorsing North West U S Regional Director Othello Washington Kevin plays a key role in his family s fruit production company in east central Washington state one of the nation s largest growers and processors of tart cherries and other fruits He is president of Royal Ridge Fruits which handles processing and drying The orchard division Dorsing Farms Inc is run by his brother Scott What really appeals to Kevin is MEDA s business solutions strategy and use of business skills to alleviate poverty around the world That s a unique approach that you don t find elsewhere he says He also likes the clarity and impact of MEDA s tight focus We re not for example a relief organization We recognize that s not who we are that s not where our skill is Kevin s most memorable MEDA experience so far was the 2008 board meeting in New Orleans where MEDA helped small businesses recover from Hurricane Katrina He was amazed by the devastation The reality hits you when you stand in an empty lot and look in all directions and see that there are no homes he says Yet it was good to see the resilience of those who were there to stay and rebuild Mostly chasing kids He and wife Wanda have three children Alisha 7 Trenton 6 and Trevor 3 They re at a real fun stage I get attacked every night when I come home from work In winter the Dorsings take to the slopes I have a ball teaching the kids to snow ski In the summer

    aeroplan miles Resources Publications The Marketplace Magazine Learning Centre Policies Logos and Branding My MEDA My Communication Preferences My Giving History MEDA Staff Logins Website Login Logout MEDA365 E mail Login MEDA365 SharePoint MEDA Master Photo Library Travel Tracker Email Print Laura Stephenson Laura Stephenson West Coast U S Regional Director Rancho Cucamonga Calif Laura is co owner with her brother of 4D Concepts a 14 year old import firm with distribution centers in California and Georgia We travel all over the world looking at products we can bring in and sell in the United States she says Their specialty is Internet business but they have been expanding to retailers and count companies like Target and Bed Bath Beyond among their clients I like the way MEDA provides opportunities to people to be entrepreneurs Laura says She knows from personal experience how challenging it can be even in the United States to operate a small business and to need cash to be able to grow I also like the emphasis some of the projects have on women s issues On our recent MEDA board trip to Ukraine it was interesting to meet the women farmers and to be able to speak to them Although she went to see MEDA s agricultural project a side benefit was to learn about the country s history and to visit the homeland of the Russian Mennonites I didn t know the Russian Mennonite history and how close it is to a lot of people Laura says It was a very emotional experience for people who have roots there She also enjoyed the interaction with other MEDA board members It s a great group of people she says I m always challenged by the people They stretch me to think Laura enjoys making jewelry and
