    Brenda Danbrook Katriona Drijber Jim Etzkorn Stephen Evans Bridget Fairbank Hilary Forge Judith Green Priscilla Janes Bradley Keys Suzette Knudsen Sean Kunz Robin Lambert Joan Matsusaki Lisa McGrath Dan Miller Tammy Parks Legge Connie Pike Kathryn Ransom Auvery Reid Joe Reid Kathryn Ruckman Carol Richard Selfridge Ruby Serben Monika Smith Darlene Swan Sam Uhlick There is considerable chatter about the state of pottery these days Is it a dying art form A number of current trends might suggest so Many potters have shifted their self descriptions to ceramist ceramicist ceramic artist or visual artist working in clay Some potters and other craftspeople are being referred to as designers who self manufacture And in the academic world of interdisciplinary it seems unfashionable to even use a media specific term such as potter Some institutions such as the Ontario College of Art and Design now revised to OCAD University have purged the work pottery OCAD now calls the remains of its ceramics program material arts Yet other trends refute any notion that pottery is on a road to extinction At the Alberta Craft Council there are more members working professionally in clay than in any other medium Clay exhibitions and ceramic work in exhibitions remain public favourites And pots sell in more volume and for more total sales that any other work in the ACC s retail gallery Member potters often report increasing sales and better prices at their own studio sales And the longer running members studios now have second and third generation customers coming to shop In addition it seems that there are more ACC members working in clay who travel teach or exhibit internationally Ceramic technologies are also in some flux Most kilns unless wood burning are now very energy efficient They are often computer controlled Transfer decorations once

    Posted by Safira Lachapelle on Saturday February 1 2014 1 Comment Joshua s work is an illustration of the dichotomy of humanity and nature He draws inspiration from nature the human world and especially where the two meet the urban decay of factories and machines His work not only depicts the antagonistic relationship between humanity and nature but also the harmonious beautiful and tenuous Muted finishes emphasize form Wheel throwing is a mechanical process while clay is naturally occurring He accentuates this by creating and joining forms that could have been made on a lathe The surfaces emulate the effects of nature on mankind s constructs oxidized metal weathered concrete and stone moss and lichen Joshua lives in Bennington Vermont with his wife and son In 2001 he received his BFA from Maine College of Art in Portland He is a juried member of the Frog Hollow in Burlington Vermont and the NAACO Gallery in North Adams Massachusetts Notable shows include Dualities The Work of Ed Carson and Joshua Primmer at NAACO Gallery and Nature Mechanized at the Arts Center in Troy NY This exhibition is the culmination of six months of exploration on Medalta s studios Everyone is invited

    The Alberta Flood Rose Project invited all Calgary and area working visual artists to create and donate an original unframed 4 x4 inch piece of wall art depicting the provincial flower of Alberta the wild rose The finished pieces were arranged into eight groups of 81 and were framed together as larger collection pieces After being on display in public locations during August the framed art pieces were up for auction at The Flood of Roses Auction in Calgary on August 28 2013 with over 25 000 to the Red Cross for flood relief This unique opportunity for individuals or corporations to own an exclusive piece of Alberta history in the making is still available with 100 of the auction proceeds going to flood relief These are one of a kind collaboration pieces by emerging and professional visual artists The depiction of the Alberta rose symbolizes the pride of these Alberta artists The number of artists participating shows how many committed Alberta artists were willing to help restore the damage done by the flood and help those in need ARTISTS THANK YOU for your submissions You re amazing Your name and website have been added to the list on the
