  • International Cup Show Submission Details | MEDALTA
    10 different countries Entries are now closed good luck to everyone and thanks for your support JUROR Carole Epp is likely best known for her work on Musing About Mud www musingaboutmud blogspot com an online resource of ceramic related content She is a graduate of the Australian National University produces two distinct lines of functional and sculptural ceramics exhibits internationally and at the end of the day is a mother to two charming young boys ELIGIBILITY The exhibition is open to all international artists Work can be either functional or sculptural so long as it addresses the idea of the cup Please submit only original work that has been completed in the last two years All work must use at least 50 fired clay as the primary medium You can submit up to three entries Entries could include 3 different cups or any of the entries can be a set If the cups are to be juried as a set please put set in one photo Front and back views are not required but if you feel it s necessary to properly convey your cup using a front and back view then using a side by side shot as one of the entries uploads is recommended Work must not exceed 2 feet in width All work must be properly prepared for exhibition be durable enough to survive shipping and display and come with exhibition assemblage instructions if applicable Medalta reserves the right to reject any work that is not suitably prepared for exhibition or that differs from the original submission Medalta reserves the right to use images and photographs of accepted works for the purposes of promotional materials including postcards calendars local media as well as online promotion All entries must be for sale priced in Canadian Dollars IMPORTANT

  • Media Release – First Annual Medalta International Cup Show opens Sept 6, 2013 | MEDALTA
    Medalta is hosting its first annual International Cup Show in the Yuill Family Gallery The exhibition features 150 pieces of artwork from 10 different countries Saskatoon based ceramic artist and international blogger Carole Epp juried the exhibition which received over 450 submissions The pieces which all showcase the artists interpretation of a cup showcase a wide range of styles and personalities The goal of the exhibition according to Medalta Curator Jenna Stanton is to expose Medicine Hat to a wide range of artistic styles and show the creative possibilities that exist in an everyday object like a cup The exhibition features both functional and non functional pieces which take the idea of a cup to the extreme According to Stanton we re excited for this exhibition to push people s perceptions of what is possible in ceramic art Medalta has partnered with Medicine Hat College to emphasize the community building aspect of the International Cup Show by offering one month artist residencies accommodation as well as a purchase prize for exceptional works of art from the show The Medicine Hat College Purchase Prize will be juried by Carole Epp with those pieces becoming an identified part of the Friends of Medalta Society public collection The Medicine Hat College has also offered one month s accommodation to the artist selected to participate in Medalta s one month artists residency in the summer of 2014 According to Medicine Hat College Director Advancement Mark Keller Medicine Hat College recognizes the positive impact of arts in our community We re pleased to welcome artists to the community and look forward to another success for Medalta The Opening Reception for the First Annual International Cup Show is Friday September 6 at 7 00pm in Medalta s Yuill Family Gallery The online sales gallery will be

    a Comment MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release Friends of Medalta Society Names 2013 14 Board of Directors focuses on sustainability July 29 2013 Medicine Hat Following the Friends of Medalta Society Annual General Meeting in June the Society re convened to select its 2013 14 Board Executive and officially welcome two new Directors to the mix This is a very dynamic Board explains Dave Sherwood who was re elected by the Board to a second year as Chair I m excited to be working with this group to develop long term sustainability plans for the Historic Clay District The goal of this organization is to provide world class cultural and heritage programming for all and we are confident that we re moving in the right direction to accomplish that There was some change within the Board of Directors for 2013 14 Retiring from the Board are Vice Chair Dawn Barr and Director Gerry Nadeau both of whom served a maximum six year term Director Cal Niebergall will replace Barr as Vice Chair while incoming Board Directors James Parsons and Jon Sookocheff will begin their first three year term as Directors There is one vacancy on the twelve member Board 2013

  • Market at Medalta to host fundraiser for flood-affected families of Elm Street & St Louis Schools on July 11, 2013 | MEDALTA
    has teamed up with Elm Street School St Louis School and to organize a fundraiser for affected families The fundraiser will take place from 4 30 8 30pm on Thursday July 11 at Medalta with all proceeds going to each school s parent council Funds raised at the July 11 Market will go towards helping families purchase essentials which were lost or damaged in the flood Historic Clay District Executive Director Barry Finkelman sees Medalta and the Historic Clay District as a rallying point for community We have always been extremely proud to be part of this neighbourhood explains Finkelman Yes we are a museum and arts centre We have also put tremendous effort into being active positive influences on this community Medalta was spared much of the flooding that hit elsewhere so we feel compelled to help the neighbourhood which we also call home This fundraiser as part of the Market at Medalta is a good way to do that For Elm Street School Principal Reagan Weeks assisting the families after the flood is her primary motivator Medalta St Louis and Elm Street recognize that many of our students lost everything they own in the flood Canceling the last week of school also meant that our students were not able to participate in year end celebrations It is our hope that we can contribute to the lengthy rebuilding process and spread a little cheer in the River Flats community One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to those directly impacted by the flood who attended St Louis or Elm Street School The fundraiser will feature live music donation drop boxes sign up sheets connecting in kind donors with recipients Medalta s museum will be open for the first time during a Market with all admissions going to the

  • July 3, 2013 Flood Update: Medalta Potteries National Historic Site | MEDALTA
    anticipated July 2 2013 Medicine Hat Alberta Canada The Medalta Potteries National Historic Site has escaped the worst of a flood which devastated much of Southern Alberta in late June However the site will remain closed to visitors as staff and volunteers work on dealing with flood damage The site which includes an industrial museum contemporary gallery gift shop and event space is preparing to open again on Thursday July 4 Any flood damage to Medalta was mitigated to a large extent because of permanent berms that surround the site These berms have been built over the past eighteen years specifically to deal with potential flooding The museum galleries collection room and offices sustained some damage while the Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics was spared Medalta has been closed to the public since a mandatory evacuation order was issued for the River Flats neighbourhood of which Medalta is a part on June 22 2013 Following the flood staff and volunteers returned to the site to deal with flood damage in the exhibits and offices Medalta s museum galleries are being prepared for opening on Thursday July 4 at 9 30am This includes the Collector s Turning Room and Reception Galleries The popular Market at Medalta which takes place every Thursday from 4 30pm 8 30pm will be open to the public on Thursday July 4 Exhibitions planned for the Yuill Family Gallery are scheduled to open on July 15 with a public opening reception to be announced later We are very concerned about the River Flats neighbourhood says Barry Finkelman Executive Director of Medalta and the Historic Clay District We were fortunate in that we were able to escape the worst of the flooding But we are aware that many in our neighbourhood were not so fortunate Our thoughts

  • Medalta Flood Update: 2:30pm MST, June 24 | MEDALTA
    30pm MST June 24 Posted by Safira Lachapelle on Monday June 24 2013 Leave a Comment Medalta staff has still not been cleared to return to the site and will not be able to until official clearance has been issued by the City of Medicine Hat which we anticipate will not happen in the next few days The flood waters from the South Saskatchewan River are slowly receding Once we are cleared to return we do have a plan of action in place on how to deal with the flooding of Medalta From what we can see from a distance the site did sustain some water damage primarily on the South end of the building with some water approaching the building from the east via a backed up storm drain Until we are cleared to safely re enter we won t be sure of the full impact The Brick Tile plant is flooded However the berms were not breached The water entered that site through backed up storm drains These drains were plugged by staff in anticipation of the flood but they unfortunately did not hold We really need to thank everyone for their support We have received hundreds of messages asking how we are doing including many former resident artists from around the world Medicine Hat residents media including CBC Toronto the Toronto Star CityTV Lethbridge and Calgary Canadian Art and our incredibly dedicated local media especially CHAT TV Medicine Hat News CJCY FM CHAT 94 5fm and MY96FM who all did an amazing job covering this tragic flood There are thousands in our neighbourhood who are still unable to return home and whose homes have been devastated by the flood There have been many offering to help out and we truly appreciate the support Once we know what
