  • AAROM science symposium hosted in Miramichi
    26th and 27th the North Shore MicMac District Council and Gespe gewaq Mi gmaq Resource Council co hosted a science symposium in Miramichi NB This science symposium brought together representatives from 10 organizations spanning across five provinces with the goal of sharing best practices and ideas in conducting scientific research Dr Albert Marshall was also presented the concept of Two Eyed Seeing combining western science practices with Mi gmaq ecological

  • Fish Friends
    only 2 will survive the difficult task of avoiding hungry predators the migration out to the ocean and the return to their natal river as spawners Yesterday Denny and I finished the setup of the last aquarium that will kick off the project Fish Friends in our community s education centers L M D C and A G S Fish Friends is a great interactive educational program that involves the classroom incubation of Atlantic salmon eyed eggs and the care of these delicate eggs as they hatch and develop into alevin fry and then parr at which point they will be released into the Eel river Over the next two months myself and Denny along with our volunteer Roland Lavallee will be going into the classrooms periodically to teach the students about the Atlantic salmon s behaviors migratory route habitat and the importance of healthy waters for the survival of the species and to share in the salmon s cultural significance to us as Mi gmaq through stories and legends Each year I look forward to the excitement and curiosity the Fish Friends program brings to each student s face and this year is no different The students truly love

  • GMRC Participates in habitat restoration
    Restigouche River Watershed Management Council and the Harmony project came together and planted over 900 trees along the Matapedia River In time these trees will grow to protect the river in many ways The foliage will provide shade in the summer for the fish and the roots will help prevent erosion The GMRC would like to thank L Association Forestierè de la Gaspesié for providing the trees and also thank

    Funding from the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation will allow us to set up fish tanks with salmon eggs in three schools Alaqsite w Gitpu School L E R School and Terry Fox Elementary This initiative gives young students ranging from grade 3 to grade 5 the opportunity to follow the development of the salmon from egg to fry It is also a great chance to learn more about the salmon
