    from 10 organizations spanning across five provinces with the goal of sharing best practices and ideas in conducting scientific research Dr Albert Marshall was also presented the concept of Two Eyed Seeing combining western science practices with Mi gmaq ecological knowledge when conducting research Community Feast August 30 2013 Each year GMRC hosts a community feast in honor of the Mi gmaq relationship with the salmon This year just like every other year we received generous donations of salmon from fishers in Listuguj and Ugpi ganjig It is also this very generosity that we come together to celebrate each year MFU and First Nations collaborate in lobster seeding efforts Listuguj QC July 31th 2013 This week the communities of Listuguj Eel River Bar and Pabineau collaborated with Homarus Inc to seed approximately 40 000 lobster larvae in the Upper Bay of Chaleur The aim of this initiative is to build sustainable lobster stocks in the area The First Nation communities together form the Gespe gewaq Mi gmaq Resource Council GMRC Based in Listuguj it is a non profit environmental company focused on improving aquatic resources through research and education activities GMRC Participates in habitat restoration July 2 2013 On Friday June 9th the GMRC in partnership with the RRWMC Restigouche River Watershed Management Council and the Harmony project came together and planted over 900 trees along the Matapedia River In time these trees will grow to protect the river in many ways The foliage will provide shade in the summer for the fish and the roots will help prevent erosion Kelt Monitoring Research May 14 2013 We are currently participating in a kelt black salmon monitoring project in the Restigouche river Some of you may have noticed some yellow buoys out on the water There are six in total 3

    Fyke nets for eel research Gulf region report on striped bass in Miramichi Medicinal walk with Karen Tree planting on the Eel river Sign Up for the GMRC Newsletter Enter your email address Subscribe Unsubscribe EMAIL PRINT Fish Friends by Jessica Gideon Did you know that a female salmon can lay anywhere between 3 000 20 000 eggs That may seem like a lot but out of all these eggs on average only 2 will survive the difficult task of avoiding hungry predators the migration out to the ocean and the return to their natal river as spawners Yesterday Denny and I finished the setup of the last aquarium that will kick off the project Fish Friends in our community s education centers L M D C and A G S Fish Friends is a great interactive educational program that involves the classroom incubation of Atlantic salmon eyed eggs and the care of these delicate eggs as they hatch and develop into alevin fry and then parr at which point they will be released into the Eel river Over the next two months myself and Denny along with our volunteer Roland Lavallee will be going into the classrooms periodically to
