  • Karsh’s Faces from History: Making a Difference –
    by those capable of greatness Yousuf Karsh Canadian born Armenia 1908 2002 utilized photographic portraiture to capture the essence of such people His rich and detailed photographs disclose the mind and soul behind the human face Karsh believed that those who attain greatness share certain traits He stated The physical details of the faces of artists and thinkers vary of course but anyone who examines these portraits will observe in them all I think an inward power that power that is essential to any work of the mind or imagination A childhood witness to the genocide in Armenia Karsh sought to portray cultural icons that bore a similar witness to great changes in society Each portrait in the exhibition Karsh s Faces from History Making a Difference was a celebration of the accomplishments of people who made a difference in our world through their leadership and ideals All great humanitarians they each played a role in making our world a better place Included were portraits of people such as political activist Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel First Lady of the World and human rights activist Eleanor Roosevelt songwriter musician and activist for human rights and environmental justice Joan Baez clergyman and iconic Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr and Anglican bishop and South African Social activist Desmond Tutu Yousuf Karsh Canadian born Armenia 1908 2002 Bishop Desmond Tutu 1986 gelatin silver print on paper Gift of Estrellita Karsh in honor of Mark M Johnson and in memory of Yousuf Karsh 2013 5 68 Fascinated by those capable of greatness Yousuf Karsh Canadian born Armenia 1908 2002 utilized photographic portraiture to capture the essence of such people His rich and detailed photographs disclose the mind and soul behind the human face Karsh believed that those who attain greatness

  • Piecing Together History: Civil Rights Quilts by Yvonne Wells –
    25 2013 Sparking a radical cultural shift various events in the early 1960s including the Montgomery Bus Boycott the Selma to Montgomery March to Freedom and the bombing of Birmingham s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church brought the nation to attention and laid the groundwork for landmark Civil Rights legislation Montgomery and Alabama were at the center of many of these events Fifty years later to commemorate the journey out of those difficult days and into the future the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts presented Piecing Together History Civil Rights Quilts by Yvonne Wells A Tuscaloosa Alabama native Yvonne Wells American born 1940 witnessed firsthand many of the struggles involved in the Civil Rights Movement Her signature story quilts serve to illuminate many difficult moments from the era including the bombing of the church in Birmingham that killed four little girls George Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door in an attempt to stop integration at the University of Alabama and the violence that cost forty individuals their lives However Wells does not focus solely on the struggles she also depicts the joyous celebrations and hopeful changes that time has brought while honoring some of the heroes of the movement including Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr As she has said Everything I create is like a story a record of history to benefit people in the future Yvonne Wells American born 1939 Rosa Parks I 2005 cotton polyester blend polyester cotton plastic buttons Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Association Purchase 2008 9 6 Sparking a radical cultural shift various events in the early 1960s including the Montgomery Bus Boycott the Selma to Montgomery March to Freedom and the bombing of Birmingham s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church brought the nation to attention and laid the groundwork for landmark Civil Rights legislation
