  • The College Application Process | Mohonasen Central School District, Rotterdam, NY
    a piece of paper to make a list your activity sheet and your application checklist READ THE INSTRUCTIONS Do you need a black pen Use a pencil first to fill out the application OR make a photocopy to fill out a practice application The goal is to avoid submitting an application with mistakes or cross outs Follow the instructions thoroughly for each application item Use the sheet of paper you have to list the things you have questions about and make a list of the other things you need to complete the application teacher recommendations application fee activities sheet etc Read the application checklist for information about Mohonasen needed to complete the application Our school code is 335103 Fill out the Application Checklist and return it to your guidance counselor along with the completed application EACH completed application MUST have an Application Checklist for a cover sheet Request written recommendations from teachers counselor coaches etc and provide each person with the necessary forms Recommendations must be requested a minimum of two weeks before you need them Attend Senior Information Night for college application process information The date is on the district calendar flyers are mailed home and information is also publicized on the website as it draws near Check each application deadline and be continuously aware of this date Applications are due to your counselor AT LEAST two weeks before the due date to the college KEEP IN MIND Counselors will always make time to see seniors but please schedule appointments in advance to make sure there is sufficient time to work with you answer your questions etc Read application essay questions carefully and select one Work with an English teacher on this Give a draft to your counselor to review for content and suggestions Start this early Carefully look over your completed application and have Mom or Dad look at it also Include a check for payment of the application processing fee Read instructions for who to make the check out to and write your name and social security number in the memo portion of the check Include that in the envelope for the application Drop off your finished application to your counselor or preferably make an appointment to go over your applications with your counselor Ask any questions from your list and have your counselor double check that you have everything Now relax if possible and wait it out Good luck When you hear back from any school let your counselor know the verdict right away Now think you re done No way In December check to see if the FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid is available to pick up from the Counseling and Career Center Or visit the FAFSA Web site to download the worksheets and start preparing Check to see if the CSS Financial Aid Profile is required by any of your schools The College Board Web site has a list of the schools that require it Attend the Parent Workshop on Filling Out

    of local college admissions counselors are the featured speakers Check the district calendar for the date and time January March Counselors meet with every junior to do an annual review Discussions focus on academic progress PSAT scores course selections for grade 12 the college selection process and career plans March April Also in March April students should sign up for the SAT SAT Subject Tests and ACT exams May Students should attend the College Fair at Hudson Valley Community College more than 200 colleges participate May Students and their parents should attend the College Information Night The Application Process for Juniors Check the district calendar for the date and time May June Students take the SAT SAT Subject Tests and ACT exams June August Students make plans to visit colleges over the summer Students should call for an appointment first to avoid visiting a campus when it may be closed or between semesters An interview is advisable Students should also be registering for SAT SAT Subject Tests or ACT Exams that they would like to retake in the fall GRADE 12 Congratulations You re almost there Your senior year will be an exciting one focusing on making a smooth transition to college the military or directly into the workplace September October Each senior meets individually with his or her counselor to review graduation and course requirements diploma options and post high school plans A college application timeline is formalized in this meeting Retake SAT SAT Subject Tests or ACT Exams September October Students and parents attend Senior Information Night presented by the high school counselors and a college admissions rep Check the district calendar for the date and time Students should be requesting recommendations from teachers counselors and other relevant adults They must include an addressed stamped envelope for each individual to each college applied for recommenders to send letters directly to the school Seniors should also begin checking in regularly at the Counseling and Career Center to look for scholarship applications October Seniors and parents attend a college essay writing workshop presented by a college admissions counselor Check the district calendar for the date and time November College applications should be submitted directly to your colleges during this month Always remember to make a copy if sending a paper application or print a copy if submitting it online Check to see if your colleges require SAT or ACT scores sent directly from the test center Keep checking for those scholarship applications this month A transcript request form for each college applied to needs to be submitted to the guidance counselor to ensure that transcripts and other important documents are submitted in a timely fashion December Make sure to complete and submit any application with a January 1 deadline This includes requesting all transcripts and recommendations at least two weeks prior to the holiday vacation Also this month Request a PIN number needed to complete a FAFSA from www pin ed gov and check to see if the schools you

    having to cross the street should move away from the bus Children should never reach for something like a homework paper that has fallen beneath the bus Likewise they should not attempt to go back on the bus for a hat or a lunch box left behind Many children will do this because they are afraid they will be in trouble Parents can help by assuring them that it s more important to be safe On the bus Follow the bus driver s directions the first time they are given Be courteous to others Do not use profane language Do not eat or drink on the bus Keep the bus clean Cooperate with the driver Keep your arms head and possessions in the bus at all times Do not smoke Do not cause damage to the bus or to other s property Stay in your seat unless the bus is at rest and you are boarding or departing the bus The bus driver is authorized to assign seats Make room for those who need a seat Items on buses Students are responsible for any special articles they bring on the bus They will lose the privilege of bringing these special articles on the bus if there are problems Generally if an item does not fit in the student s lap it will not be permitted on the bus Any large items must be approved by the driver and consideration must be given to room available on the bus No child will be without a seat because of a large article taking up space Any small items like toys balls marbles etc should be kept in a backpack or other bag Rolling and thrown objects are serious safety hazards to the driver and the students What is and is not permitted
