  • Senior project promotes literacy among kindergartners | Mohonasen Central School District, Rotterdam, NY
    read or ask someone to read to them for at least 15 minutes a day The energy in our room was amazing and the children were thrilled beyond belief to get these books and enjoy the story and project said kindergarten teacher Christine Baumann The special visit was the culmination of two months of work to establish the non profit community organization Tomorrow s Leaders Helping Readers The initiative served as the class community action project designed to make an impact on the local community and was borne from the seniors eagerness to share the impact that reading had on them growing up and their hope to inspire children to read more With all the new technology emerging it s important for all students to recognize that because of reading and books we are able to learn and succeed said senior Emily Scholz It s important that we reach out to the youngest students and show them how we got where we are Working in teams seniors focused on ways to help children build a strong foundation in reading and writing skills Prior to their visit the class reached out to Mohonasen faculty and staff to design a logo for the project and learn best practices for reading to and interacting with young children They also created a budget lesson plans and communications and messaging surrounding the project Books were generously donated by Barnes and Noble and funding was provided by the Mohonasen Foundation for Excellence About Us Academics Athletics Board of Education Community Student Services Featured Budget Finance Breakfast Lunch Menus Calendar Contact News Staff Resources About Us Budget Finance Calendar Contact Directions Employment Forms News Notifications Policies Publications Registration Staff Resources Academics APPR Common Core Learning Standards Continuing Education Enrichment Extracurricular Offerings Grant Programs High School Course of

  • State wide graduation data shows overall increase | Mohonasen Central School District, Rotterdam, NY
    goal This is why we are working so hard to provide students with a wide variety of courses and learning opportunities things like AP courses career and technical education programs internships and college in the high school This is why we ve focused on literacy and STEM programs in the early years so that students enter high school with a strong base of skills Superintendent Dr Kathleen Spring said As we work to implement the Common Core standards and other changes that have been handed down by the state we re encouraged to see that our graduation rate has held steady and we re hoping to see it increase in the years to come The report s findings underscored that while graduation rates for all districts have increased over the past five years the performance gap between high need and low need districts remains nearly unchanged at approximately 30 percentage points More than 94 percent of students from low need districts graduated compared to only 66 percent of students from high need urban and suburban districts In commenting on the report Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H Tisch noted that the reforms we started in 2010 are being put into practice every day in classrooms across the state and we re starting to see the benefits She concluded by reaffirming the Board of Regents commitment to giving all students the opportunity to graduate ready for college or career by creating multiple pathways to graduation each focused on rigorous coursework and a program of study The Board of Regents is expected to vote in January on new regulations that would allow students to replace an existing Regents requirement for graduation with exams in one of five pathways including the humanities STEM Career and Technical Education the arts or bi literacy A

  • Using technology to teach and learn | Mohonasen Central School District, Rotterdam, NY
    develop students critical thinking problem solving and creativity skills all of which are considered fundamental to success by today s business industry education and government leaders Mohonasen Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Lisa Cutting says technology simply offers teachers more tools in their toolbox Technology can change how a student interacts with a lesson There s the ability to hear touch and see what they are learning in a variety of ways she said Today s kids are often referred to as digital natives because they don t know what the world was like before the Internet It s engaging them in their world and it works In a recent survey of Mohonasen families 50 percent said their child had access to a desktop computer outside of school for the purposes of homework 69 percent said a laptop and 64 percent said their child had access to a tablet More than 73 percent said their child had access to a cell mobile phone for the purposes of school work District officials say the fact is students go home and power up We re done with powering them down in school says district Technology Director James Dilbone Today s students have access to so many different devices We need to make sure we re using that to our advantage Google A game changer Along with websites like Twitter and Flocabulary teachers students and administrators are increasingly using Google resources throughout Mohonasen s schools All teachers and students have a Google account with e mail file storage and file sharing capabilities Teachers and students can share Google Docs with each other for easy editing review and grading Google eases collaborations between students and students teachers and teachers and teachers and administrators In a recent English Language Arts class at Draper Middle School students were working on Google Chromebook computers to complete their morning assignment As they worked teacher Kim Coelho was able to follow along from her workstation seeing which students might need a little extra help and which ones were working ahead It s an immediate assessment Coelho said I can immediately see what they re doing There are a few Chromebook carts throughout the district Each cart contains enough computers for an entire class and the carts are rotated through the schools A group of Mohonasen teacher leaders have been trained on the Google platform through the New York State Strengthening Teacher Leader Effectiveness Grant that the district was awarded These teachers are implementing what they are learning and training their colleagues Mohonasen faculty and staff are also using Google to create classroom websites and even flipped classroom lessons video lessons students and parents can watch at home We saw the vision of the Google environment and how it integrates into the classroom What we re finding is that the more the teachers learn the hungrier they become to learn more and use more technology Dilbone said Google has become a game changer for the district on a number
