    4 months of age Most SIDS deaths occur in colder months African American babies are twice as likely to die of SIDS as white babies A SIDS death happens suddenly with no sign of suffering Preventing SIDS Place your baby to sleep on his or her back at night and during naptime Let your baby play on their stomach while you watch carefully Have your baby sleep in a crib that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards Use a firm mattress Don t place any types of bedding such as pillows quilts or bumpers in the crib There should be no toys in the crib either The safest place for your baby to sleep is in the room where you sleep Place the baby s crib or bassinet near your bed within an arm s reach Don t let your baby get too warm during sleep If a light blanket is needed make sure you tuck it in on all sides and that it doesn t come above the baby s arms Make sure the baby s feet are at the bottom of the crib Make sure your baby s head and face stay uncovered Do not allow smoking
