  • MPF Annual Dinner to Benefit MPF’s 50th Anniversary Campaign, Featuring Dr. Peter Raven » Missouri Prairie Foundation | Prairies Now and Forever
    One Prairie at a Time Peter H Raven is president emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden George Engemann Professor of Botany Emeritus at Washington University in St Louis and a Trustee of the National Geographic Society and Chairman of the Society s Committee for Research and Exploration For more than 39 years Dr Raven headed the Missouri Botanical Garden an institution he nurtured to become a world class center for botanical research education and horticulture display During this period the Garden became a leading center for botanical research and conservation in Latin America Africa Asia and North America and co sponsored with the Missouri Department of Conservation a thorough revision of Steyermark s Flora of Missouri completed in August 2013 Since the mid 1960s Dr Raven has been an outspoken advocate of the need for conservation throughout the world based on efforts to attain sustainability and social justice everywhere He was described by TIME magazine as a Hero of the Planet and has received numerous prizes and awards including the International Prize for Biology from the government of Japan Volvo Environment Prize the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement the Sasakawa Environment Prize and the BBVA Prize for Ecology and Conservation Madrid Dr Raven has also held Guggenheim and John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation Fellowships In 2001 Dr Raven received the National Medal of Science the highest award for scientific accomplishment in the United States He has been president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Sigma Xi the American Institute of Biological Sciences and a number of other organizations He served for 12 years as Home Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences to which he was elected in 1977 He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the

    center for individual and small group learning experiences Trails through woods prairie plantings ponds and streams can gently introduce visitors to the natural habitats of Missouri the geologic and human history of the area This is a growing and evolving New Bloomfield MO property now employing a paid horticulturist and a groundskeeper Lorna shares the responsibility with husband Henry Henry s parents initially purchased the property in 1971 Bill T Crawford Award Prairie Professional of the Year Mervin Wallace Brazito MO has been in the business of propagating and selling plants of Missouri genetic origin for more than 30 years Through the years Mervin has also grown into his well qualified role of educator His Missouri Wildflowers Nursery catalog has become a handbook for beginning and longtime native plant gardeners Mervin has earned the respect of his naturalist peers and has given us more access to some very fine plants and the knowledge to grow them well He has shared his philosophy of the natural world without shouting it from a podium or writing it in a book Donald M Christisen Award Prairie Volunteer of the Year Monte Abbott St Louis MO was a partner in creating the non profit Sustainable St Louis and has taken on a number of projects that have specifically targeted the Shaw neighborhood in St Louis Among the initiatives he and his partner have undertaken is the mobilization of volunteers to convert four massive corners of an underpass at Interstate 44 the Thurman Gateway to prairie plantings Monte has personally maintained the plantings for more than a year He also converted an impressive section of I 44 right of way to plant a savanna of various shrubs and nectar plants that he personally maintains In addition Monte recently grew 250 milkweeds from seed that are

    at the 4 30 p m Annual Missouri Prairie Foundation MPF Member Meeting members in good standing at the meeting have the opportunity to vote for four nominees to the board of directors Each will serve a three year term Per the Missouri Prairie Foundation by laws members at large may submit an alternative slate of nominees David Young of Windsor Missouri worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation for 30 years as a wildlife land management biologist on public lands David has been an MPF member for more than 40 years is a Master Gardener and helped manage prairies in west central Missouri Thomas Martin of Belton Missouri has worked with the Missouri Department of Conservation on remnant prairie restoration and prescribed burns and has documented changes to the habitat as practices were implemented Thomas has worked for 35 years in communications writing for the media as an illustrator photographer and has been published in a number of trade publications He also has marketing experience Scott Lenharth of Nevada Missouri has been a valued board member of MPF for the last three years Scott has focused much of his passion training and talents towards the restoration of Stilwell Prairie
