    MPPM Repudiates Presence of Avigdor LIeberman in Portugal 26 Jan 2011 MPPM REPUDIATES PRESENCE IN PORTUGAL OF FOREIGN MINISTER OF ISRAEL AVIGDOR LIEBERMAN The National Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and Peace in the Middle East vigorously rejects the presence in Portugal at the invitation of the Portuguese Government of the current Foreign Minister of Israel Avigdor Lieberman who is leader of a xenophobic right wing party and is known for his positions overtly racist and favourable to the expulsion of the Arab population of Palestine As Foreign Minister he has taken prominent position in the illegal and criminal policy of occupation and colonization of Palestinian territories and the intensification of persecution of the Arab community in Israel and of the human rights organizations that denounce the Zionist policy of occupation The reception given by the Portuguese government to such a personality is an affront to the democratic and solidarity sentiments of the Portuguese people and a blatant violation of Article 7 of the Constitution The National Directorate of MPPM claims of the Portuguese Government to adopt a firm and consequent policy in the demonstration of solidarity with the national cause and the inalienable rights of the

  • Abdullah Hourani Died Yesterday
    between May 27 and June 1 2006 His visit was seminal for the MPPM for it occurred at a time when the movement was structuring and creating its bases of support from national public opinion It was also very important for the Palestinian cause because it was accompanied by interviews with major figures in political and labour life as well as its participation in public meetings for clarification on the situation in Palestine During his stay in Portugal Abdullah Hourani was received by Vice President of the Assembly of the Republic Manuel Alegre the Presidents and Councilors of the Municipalities of Lisbon Beja Serpa and Almada the President of the PS Socialist Party Almeida Santos and the Secretary General of the PCP Communist Party Jerónimo de Sousa the parliamentary groups of the PS the PCP and BE Block of the Left and the Directorates of CGTP IN General Confederation of Portuguese Workers and UGT General Workers Union He participated in public sessions in Almada and Serpa as well as in a meeting with individuals linked to the formation of the MPPM Silas Cerqueira Secretary for International Relations of the MPPM gives his personal testimony about Hourani I knew Abdullah Hourani for over 30 years and had with him a relation on the political and personal level I learned a lot from him and learned to respect his rare qualities of political courage integrity and intelligence That is why he split from Yasser Arafat not angry but refusing his insistent offers when he embarked by the Oslo Accords a trap set by the European social democracy and whose tragic results for the Palestinian people and Arafat himself are obvious today On the human level Abdullah was a kind and cultured personality a good man He liked Portugal of the April 25

  • MPPM Celebrates International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
    Carlos Almeida noted that the United Nations General Assembly resolution 32 40 of December 2 nd 1977 establishing the observance of International Day of Solidarity with the People of Palestine stated in its first part that a lasting peace in the Middle East was inseparable from the establishment of a just solution to the Palestinian question and that this could only be achieved on the basis of the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people first the right to independence and national sovereignty as well as right of return of refugees He evoked then the World Conference of Solidarity with the Arab nation and its Central Cause the Palestinian Question held in Lisbon in 1979 the first major meeting of solidarity with the Palestinian people of a country in Western Europe Translating the Israeli violence against Palestinians in the brutality of the numbers Carlos Almeida denounced the expansionist policies of Israel and the complicity of the international community He concluded by calling for international solidarity now more than ever necessary Spoke then Adel Sidarus who raised the issue of Christians in Palestine He recalled that the founders of the most radical groups of the Palestinian national movement were Christians and evoked the names of some Christians who more radically criticize Israel to denounce the pressure exerted by Israel on Christians to leave the country After referring the violence of the Israeli occupier which forced the mass exodus of the Christian population of Palestine Adel Sidarus ended by denouncing the current process of Judaizing Jerusalem The last speech of the session came from the new diplomatic representative of Palestine in Portugal Ambassador Mufeed Shamati He began by welcoming those present on his own behalf and on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas and Foreign Minister of Palestine Riad Al Malki

  • Journey to Palestine Culminates School Contest Edition 2009-2010
    delegation went to East Jerusalem having visited namely the Mount of Olives the Holy Sepulchre and the Wailing Wall The third day was spent in Nablus where the Portuguese delegation was received by the Democratic Union of Women in the Civil Government where they had a meeting with the Civil Governor in the City Council where they were welcomed by its Mayor at the University of An Najam where they were received by a representative of the Dean and met a Portuguese professor Dr Micaela Miranda who currently works at the Freedom Theatre in Jenim and who will be the reader of the first course of Portuguese language to be taught in Palestine There was also a visit to the EVE Cultural Center and a walking tour of the city s historic district The day ended with a visit to the Balata Refugee Camp The next day the Portuguese delegation travelled to Bethlehem where they were received at the headquarters of the Fatah Youth having left here accompanied by a group of young people for a city tour that included the Church of the Nativity In the afternoon there was a visit to the Palestinian Political Prisoners Association the Fatah Youth Women s Holiday Camp and Aida Refugee Camp The day ended at the Shepherds Field of Beit Sahur where the delegation was received by the Mayor who had returned from Portugal that same day The fifth day was spent in Ramallah It began in the Permanent Representation of Portugal in Palestine where the delegation had an interview with Ambassador Jorge Torres Pereira Then accompanied by the Portuguese Ambassador they went to the Yasser Arafat Foundation where they were welcomed by its chairman Dr Nasser Alkudwa After a meeting with Dr Nabil Shaath former Minister of Foreign Affairs the group went to the Birzeit University where he was received by Heba Hammad responsible for Public Relations of the University In the afternoon the delegation had a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of Negotiations with Dr Xavier Abu Eid and visited at his home the catholic priest Manuel Mussalam who is a member of the National Movement for the Liberation of Palestine and Chairman of the World Christian Department A visit to the tomb of Yasser Arafat preceded the dinner in the company of the new Palestinian Ambassador in Portugal Dr Mufeed Shami The penultimate day of the visit began in Hebron where the delegation was received in the City Council by its Mayor Khaled Osaily The ensuing visit to the Old Town was followed by lunch at Betoma and return to Ramallah The last day was spent on returning to Amman on the way to Lisbon In addition to the visits and institutional contacts socializing with the Palestinians and in particular with its young to be informed about the history culture and daily life of the people the group had the opportunity to feel the gratuitious violence in Israel check points the provocation of the settlements the

  • MPPM Condemns Israeli Attack on Gaza Freedom Flotilla
    for Gaza and taking on board about 750 people of sixty nationalities with 10 000 tons of various products to help the people of Gaza that group of vessels was attacked while in international waters according to the available news by units of the navy of Israel which sets up a serious violation of international law This brutal action of the Israeli armed forces which occurred only days after the formal accession of Israel to the OECD most dramatically illustrates the aggressive nature of Israeli politics and its profound contradiction with the principles of peace freedom and democracy It is therefore inseparable from the status of impunity that the government of that country seems to enjoy as well as the climate of passivity if not active complicity with which the international community is following the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and in particular the brutal blockade that continues to be imposed on the population of Gaza The climate of high tension generated by this military operation underlines once again how the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is a serious and permanent threat to the peace and security in the region It is therefore urgent and necessary to mobilize the

  • School Contest Peace for Palestine Ends in Festive Atmosphere
    city of Lisbon s Republic and Resistance Museum Library where were also exhibited to the public until May 26 the winning works in Written Work and Fine Arts categories The award ceremony was conducted by Julio de Magalhães who chaired the jury assisted by Amador Clemente executive coordinator of the competition It also counted with the presence of Ambassador Randa Nabulsi who gave an unsurpassed support to the initiative and with some of the jurors who delivered the awards The auditorium on that Saturday was full of students faculty and guests of all ages grandparents and siblings of young age who came from almost the entire national territory with the exception of prize winning students of the Pico Island Azores who had great difficulty in travelling to the Continent It was with great enthusiasm that these young people attended the reading of texts and projection of videos of the winning entries and with great emotion and respect that they received the awards and the keffiyeh scarf that was well known in the sixties for becoming a symbol Palestinian nationalism that Ambassador Randa Nabulsi General Delegate of Palestine placed on the shoulders of each prize winner students and teachers One highlight there was when the Ambassador announced the Special Prize of the Jury consisting of a trip to Palestine for winning students and the faculty advisers for a week accompanied by representatives of the General Delegation of Palestine and MPPM The winners were Ana Isabel Silva Lourenço Carla Felícia Mira Adriano Jéssica Alexandre Pinto Roque Rafael Alexander Alegria Miller Simaura Alexandre Marques Faria and Professor Aníbal José Ribeiro Serra of the Basic School of the 2nd and 3rd cycles Poceirão Palmela Ana Filipa da Cunha Real André Rafael Gomes Fernandes and Sara Cristiana Marques Costa and Professor Carla Sílvia de Vasconcelos
