    Biography Listen Zoffany s name was originally Johannes Josephus Zauffaly son of the architect Franz Zauffaly He began his apprenticeship in the studio of the painter and engraver Martin Speer in Ratisbon In 1750 he left for Rome where he completed his training with Agostino Masucci and met Mengs During this early phase Zoffany painted a series of paintings and frescoes for Clement Augustus Prince Elector of Trier in his palaces at Trier and Ehrenbreitstein now lost In 1760 the artist moved to London where he began to work in the studio of Benjamin Wilson At this point he began to paint small compositions in which groups of figures are engaged in conversation a format that brought him enormous success and fame Over the following years he principally worked for the actor David Garrick for whom he painted a large number of these conversation pieces as well as a series of mezzotints of theatrical scenes These were exhibited at the Society of Actors in 1762 and were highly acclaimed by the public and critics further consolidating his fame throughout Great Britain As a result Zoffany began to receive commissions from the British aristocracy including Lord Bute who probably presented him to George III and Queen Charlotte in 1763 In works such as Queen Charlotte and her two eldest Sons or George Prince of Wales and Frederick Duke of York both Royal Collection Windsor Castle Zoffany depicted the royal family for the first time in an informal manner marking a radical departure from the traditional type of royal portrait In 1769 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy while in 1772 the year that he acquired British citizenship Zoffany left again for Italy There he painted one of his most celebrated works The Tribune of the Uffizi Royal Collection

    Squarcione in Padua with whom he signed an adoption contract on 24 May 1455 but this agreement only lasted two years as Zoppo decided that it was more to Squarcione s benefit than his own After the contract was annulled he moved to Venice and although he remained faithful to his Bolognese roots his style evolved towards one that combined the lessons of the great painters of the day At the outset of his career the influence of Donatello and the Paduan school is particularly evident of which The Virgin and Child with Angels Musée du Louvre Paris is a clear example reflecting the decorative manner of Squarcione Zoppo s style continued to evolve and began to reflect the work of other masters such as Mantegna A work from this period is The Virgin and Child National Gallery Washington which is notable for the pose of the figures and the drapery while another major work of this date is the altarpiece of around 1468 for the church of Santa Giustina of which only fragments have survived including Saint Augustine National Gallery London and Saint Paul Ashmolean Museum Oxford Zoppo s style also reveals a knowledge of the work of Andrea del Castagno and of the leading Ferrarese painters particularly Cosmè Tura while his later output manifests his familiarity with the art of Giovanni Bellini and Antonello da Messina who was in Venice in the early 1470s In general Zoppo s painting became more luminous and his landscape backgrounds acquird greater importance Late works include The Virgin and Child Lindenau Museum Altenburg Zoppo was esteemed by his contemporaries and despite his early death had a large number of pupils and clients His drawings are also outstanding and he left behind a large corpus of imaginative designs Search Advanced search Featured Products

    trained in the workshop of Pedro Díaz Villanueva in Seville On completing his apprenticeship in 1617 he established himself in Llerena where he lived for more than ten years The following year he married his first wife María Páez She bore him three children one of whom Juan de Zurbarán was an excellent still life painter He returned to Seville on receiving a commission from the Dominican friars of San Pablo el Real to produce a series on the life of Saint Dominic The first dated work from this period is the Crucifixion in the Art Institute of Chicago Despite his youth these works already display an impressive skill at reproducing materials great expressive intensity in the faces delicate hues and a rich palate with a considerable variety of shades of white He also worked for the friars of the Merced Calzada for whom he executed the Saint Serapion now in Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford By this time he was one of the most important and famous painters in the whole of Andalusia and ran a large workshop In 1634 he moved to Madrid to decorate the Hall of Realms of the Buen Retiro palace with a series of ten canvases illustrating the Labours of Hercules and two canvases on the Defence of Cádiz He returned to Seville the following year This was his period of artistic maturity and also his most fruitful as it witnessed the execution of some of the most important series such as those for the charterhouse of Jerez de la Frontera and the monastery of Guadalupe During his final years he produced private devotional works in which his style became more luminous and gentle Zurbarán was an active exporter of paintings to Spanish America Mexico Lima and other major cities In 1658 he returned to

    with whom she lived in California Italy and Switzerland until his death in 1973 Together they built a house on the Costa Brava that remains one of the Baroness s favourite residences While on holiday in Sardinia in the late 1970s Carmen Cervera met Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen Bornemisza a businessman and art collector whom she married in England in 1985 and from whom she was inseparable until the Baron s death in April 2002 From the outset Carmen Thyssen shared the Baron s wish that his art collection should be accessible to the world In addition and with his support and guidance she also embarked on creating her own art collection thus continuing the artistic tradition of the Thyssen Bornemisza family The Baroness s key role in bringing about the agreement between the Thyssen Bornemisza Collection and the Kingdom of Spain initially for the loan of the former and subsequently for its permanent acquisition by the Spanish State has been widely recognised The agreement was a historic event for Spain and also guaranteed that the Collection would remain undivided and that it would be displayed in the finest possible setting In recognition of her endeavours in 1988 the Baroness was awarded the Gran Cruz of Isabel la Católica and in March 1999 the Gold Medal for Fine Arts presented to her by King Juan Carlos of Spain in Santiago de Compostela The Baroness has been an Academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Cádiz since 2000 In 2009 she was awarded the Melvin Jones Prize by the Fundación Lions Club of Gijón and the Alfiler de Oro Prize by the Asociación Mujer Siglo XXI in Bilbao in 2010 In 1999 Baroness Thyssen publicly expressed her wish that her collection should be loaned for eleven years for display
