  • Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. Inicio
the case with the other genres that acquired a newly elevated status in the 17th century Saenredam was the first major artist to depict such motifs in a rigorous and realistic manner moving away from the imaginary architectural scenes that had been widespread in art in the second half of the 16th century and early years of the 17th century Cornelis de Bie who wrote the first biography of the artist published in 1662 the year of the present painting noted that around 1628 Saenredam decided to devote all his activities to this new genre and that his skills in such works would earn him the description of the first architectural portraitist Saenredam was friends with two important architects who were also painters Jacob van Campen who designed the new Town Hall in Amsterdam and Pieter Post The painting s provenance is known from 1768 when it appeared on the art market in an auction in Haarlem The canvas remained in Holland until 1928 when it was to be found on the UK art market and was included in an exhibition on Dutch art held in 1929 at the Royal Academy in London In 1952 it was with the art dealer C Duits It was acquired in 1979 for the Thyssen Bornemisza Saenredam was in Utrecht between June and October 1636 During his stay he made drawings of the interior and exterior of the Romanesque Mariakerk as well as drawings of other churches such as the Buurkerk and the Jacobskerk in August and the Janskerk the Cathedral and the Catharijnekerk between September and October The present panel depicts the Romanesque church of Saint Mary of Utrecht or the Mariakerk which was demolished in the 19th century There is a drawing by Saenredam of the church dated 30 August 1636 according

  • Castle in a Forest - Jan Wijnants | Museo Thyssen
works date from slightly before 1650 and generally depict farms or large brick huts surrounded by dense woodland During this period the artist collaborated with the painter Dirck Wijntrack who painted the animals and some other elements in his compositions At the end of the decade Wijnants modified his style and included a series of elements derived from other landscape painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael From this point onwards his rustic houses are located further back in the pictorial space becoming smaller and fusing with the background planes In addition Wijnants located stumps of trees gnarled trunks of fallen trees or dry twisted ones in the foreground motifs derived from Ruisdael and illuminated with a glowing light The subject of this panel as Gaskell noted is unusual within Wijnants oeuvre The view opens on the left with a stream that leads directly to the plain façade of an imposing castle On the right bank and following the course of the water is a road framed on either side by a line of trees with figures walking along it towards the castle This side provides a marked contrast with the other bank which is concealed by a dense mass of trees shrubs and undergrowth A feature that would become characteristic of his work in the 1670s is the dry trunk of a gnarled tree located in the foreground This composition has been related to the work of another artist who collaborated with Wijnants in Amsterdam namely Jan Hackaert in particular Avenue of Birch Trees in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in which Hackaert depicts an area of water on the right that is followed by the curve of a path lined with birch trees Proceeding along the avenue is a lively group of riders hunters with their dogs and passers by With

  • Landscape with a Sunset - Aelbert Jacobsz. Cuyp | Museo Thyssen
second half of the 1640s Cuyp embarked on a new direction and started to depict views of mountains flocks with shepherds and travellers on roads illuminated with the soft golden light of the Mediterranean evening It would seem however that Cuyp never went to Italy and that he derived these elements from innovations in the work of his fellow painters who had visited that country The work of Jan Both was an important influence with regard to Cuyp s new approach to landscape Landscape with a Sunset is a typical composition by the artist and one that includes the various elements that brought him fame and popularity The subject chosen as a pretext to depict the sunset is that of a cowherd who is seen in the centre of the composition guiding his herd home at the end of the day The path which runs almost parallel to the edge of the painting in the immediate foreground turns to the left and leads on to a rustic wooden bridge that creates a marked diagonal dividing the composition into two areas emphasised by the lighting Cuyp fills the dark foreground zones from which the sun has already departed with undergrowth and branches whose leaves are carefully painted and which contrast with the soft pale tones used in the background The sky is tinged with the pink of sunset that touches the peaks of the distant mountains and highlights the clouds and branches of the trees on the right With regard to its composition the panel has been compared to various paintings by Both including Landscape with a Bridge that was formerly in the Cook collection in Richmond and three others in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich the Wallace Collection in London and in a private collection There are also two further
