  • Red Man with Moustache - Willem de Kooning | Museo Thyssen
cavas Medidas 186 x 91 5 cm Úbicacion Museo Thyssen Bornemisza Madrid Numero de inventario INV Nr 631 1984 17 VEGAP Madrid Print Request Image The work in context More information about this work Listen Willem de Kooning s entire artistic career is characterised by the ease with which he moved between abstraction and figuration His exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery in 1953 showing a group of paintings of huge sized expressive women was a succès de scandale The gestural brushwork and violence of the colour combined with a portrayal of the female figure that was grotesque demoniacal even in appearance ushered in a stage in which the artist sought to capture the vital energy of the human being in his works Red Man with Moustache a work painted in 1971 that can be linked to this series shows a sculptural full length figure of a man concealed behind a jumble of thick gestural dabs of impasto that conveys great vitality The elongated canvas a format the artist used after moving his studio to Long Island in 1963 allows him to portray an oversized larger than life figure As in other paintings by De Kooning the picture space is defined by crammed almost claustrophobic brushstrokes that leave no breathing space whatsoever adding to the abstraction of the image It is therefore through the very act of painting that the artist succeeds in erasing all distinctions between figuration and abstraction The predominant red often found in De Kooning s compositions from the 1960s onwards is linked to feelings of passion and rage Its widespread use in the present composition could be interpreted as the artist s need to utter a deep cry that inevitably recalls the convulsive deformation of Bacon s figures Paloma Alarcó Search Advanced search Featured Products Catalogue

  • Good Hope Road II. Pastoral - Arshile Gorky | Museo Thyssen
fantasy The Museo Thyssen Bornemisza Good Hope Road II of which there is an earlier version now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts belonged to The Museum of Modern Art in New York for a time It was executed the year that the artist s first one man exhibition was held at the Julien Levy Gallery The catalogue included a short introduction by André Breton who had met Gorky in 1944 and immediately became his main champion though he never managed to persuade him to join the Surrealist group The leader of French Surrealism had sought refuge in New York at the time where he had drawn together a small circle of Surrealists to which Max Ernst André Masson Yves Tanguy and Roberto Matta belonged Their presence on the art and literary scene aroused the interest of the young American artists The present painting also known as Hugging may be considered a typical example of Gorky s biomorphic abstraction which anticipated American Action painting a movement which blended seemingly opposite trends such as Cubist spatial construction and Surrealist automatism It was executed at the home of his friend David Hare in Good Hope Road Roxbury Connecticut where Gorky lived from 1944 until his death in 1948 In an interior illuminated by firelight two figures can be made out locked in an embrace while a window in the upper part establishes a relationship between exterior and interior Julien Levy the painting s first owner described it as a depiction of the artist with his dog and a cow which explains Gorky s interest in basing his paintings on his personal experiences Various influences can be identified in the composition from Matta he borrows the amoebic forms of the setting and the manner of applying the paint in fine layers from

  • Untitled (Renate Series) - Hans Hofmann | Museo Thyssen
canvas Medidas 121 9 x 91 4 cm Úbicacion Museo Thyssen Bornemisza Madrid Numero de inventario INV Nr 587 1981 10 VEGAP Madrid Print Request Image The work in context More information about this work Listen Hofmann s conception of abstraction is based on the early twentieth century theories of metaphysical and universal truths Like Kandinsky he was concerned with the spiritual content of painting however he did not share the same Utopian ideas and was convinced that art had an entity of its own that was totally unrelated to life His visual language which rejected the notion of theme yet did not renounce transmitting a certain ethic and his theories on the autonomy of art which he himself taught at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York made him one of the most influential artists on the American art scene of the mid century Towards the end of his life in 1965 Hofmann produced the Renate Series which was inspired by his second wife Renate Schmitz These paintings among them the present work belonging to the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza are held to be the culminating point of his non objective language which attempted to reconcile the clarity of geometric abstraction with more expressive and colourful abstract forms The picture space is structured around quadrangular elements in saturated colours that float amid a dark uneven surface and volume is built by means of contrasting colours forms and textures The resulting tension between flatness which is passive and the illusion of depth which is useless was defined by the painter as a push and pull effect The result of these contrasting rhythms is an ambiguous dynamic and fluctuating picture space Paloma Alarcó Search Advanced search Featured Products Catalogue of the Madrid Realists exhibition Spanish Hardcover Add to Basket

  • Untitled - Matta | Museo Thyssen
the exhibition of artists in exile organised by the Pierre Matisse Gallery and is portrayed in the famous photograph immortalising the event alongside Breton Ernst Masson Tanguy Eugene Berman Marc Chagall Fernand Léger Jacques Lipchitz Piet Mondrian Amédée Ozenfant Kurt Seligmann Pavel Tchelitchew and Ossip Zadkine During his years in New York Matta established an even greater complicity with Breton and Duchamp with whom he shared the notion of Les Grands Transparents invisible entities that surround human beings Breton referred to these entities in his writings and the Chilean painter gave visual form to them in his apocalyptic settings Matta s emphasis on the power of violence led him to be hailed as one of the most influential figures of late Surrealism and during the early 1940s his studio in the Greenwich district New York became the centre of a debate in which many of the future Abstract Expressionists took part such as Robert Motherwell William Baziotes Arshile Gorky and Jackson Pollock Although the titles of his paintings were essential to the Chilean painter the present work does not have one It has sometimes been published as Composition or Abstract Composition but both the artist s wife Germana Ferrari and Christopher Green prefer the more neutral name of Untitled which is now used Furthermore although this small canvas belonging to the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza has been dated to around 1938 39 on more than one occasion on account of its biomorphic forms built from fine semitransparent layers which greatly resemble his Psychological Morphology paintings or Inscapes interior or mental landscapes of the late 1930s it is more likely to have been painted while he resided in New York Christopher Green convincingly proposes that the work should be dated to 1942 43 Although related to the Psychological Morphology paintings derived from
