    important place among the British artists of the post Second World War period His work executed slowly with great attention to detail has been associated with the School of London a heterogeneous group of artists with a shared interest in representing the human figure and an outright rejection of the academic naturalist tradition Raised in a strict Methodist environment Andrews studied at the Slade School of Art in London in 1947 and again from 1949 to 1953 after performing military service There he was a student of William Coldstream a realist artist linked to the Euston Road School who taught him the importance of copying from life and received classes from Lucian Freud From his early days as a painter his works were characterised by a concern with achieving technical virtuosity and representing states of mind and different types of behaviour Andrews paintings of family scenes of the 1950s were followed in the 1960s by party pictures into which he incorporated images from the media fashion the film world and pop music together with depictions of his friends In 1959 he began teaching at the Norwich School of Art and later held posts at the Chelsea School of Art and Slade School of Art Like Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud before him in 1966 Andrews signed a contract with the Marlborough Gallery which enabled him to devote himself solely to painting and start work on studies for his Lights series In this series he experimented with acrylic paint and spray guns which allowed him to achieve surfaces from which the artist s hand was absent and in which light acquired a far reaching significance His exploration of nature as a liberating experience increased in the paintings and watercolours made during his trip to Australia and numerous visits to Scotland and

    Ponte It is known that between 1418 and 1421 he entered the monastery of San Domenico in Fiesole as his name is associated in 1423 with the execution of a crucifix for the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova Among Fra Angelico s first works in addition to his activities as a miniaturist are the Saint Peter Martyr Triptych and The Virgin and Child both Museo di San Marco Florence They reveal the influence of the late Gothic style of Lorenzo di Monaco a knowledge of the artistic innovations introduced by Masaccio and Ghiberti and Brunelleschi s approach to architecture By the early 1430s Fra Angelico was an esteemed artist and was considered one of the greatest painters in all of Florence In 1436 the community of Dominican monks to which he belonged was assigned to the monastery of San Marco in Florence where the artist is documented in 1441 For this monastery Fra Angelico painted a series of around 50 frescoes to decorate the monks cells He conceived these compositions as devotional aids and their colouring and composition encourage a mood of reflection and serenity In the last phase of his career he was summoned to Rome by Pope Nicholas V to decorate one of the chapel in the Vatican in fresco Executed between 1447 and 1450 this ensemble depicts scenes from the lives of Saint Stephen and Saint Lawrence and reveals a greater emphasis on narrative and detail than the San Marco series In 1450 the artist returned to his monastery in Fiesole where he was appointed Prior Three years later he returned to Rome and on his death there in 1455 was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva Vasari dedicated a chapter in his Lives to the artist in which he emphasised his modesty and

    Annenkov Title Amiens Cathedral Year 1919 Biography Listen Born in Siberia where his family was in exile Yurii Annenkov moved to Saint Petersburg as a child In 1908 he enrolled at university and attended the workshops of Savely Zeidenberg and Yan Tsyonglinsky where he came into contact with avant garde artists such as Matvey Vol demar and Mikhail Matyushin From 1911 to 1912 he lived in Paris and worked at the studios of Maurice Denis and Félix Vallotton In 1913 Annenkov returned to Saint Petersburg where he soon turned towards abstraction though he did not join any particular group of artists and continued to show a certain fondness for decoration In 1919 he developed an interest in collage a medium in which he produced numerous works and worked intensely as an illustrator of both magazines such as Satirikon and Argus and books on varied themes prominent among which is Alexander Blok s revolutionary poem Dvenadtsat The Twelve Saint Petersburg 1918 In parallel with this activity he produced portraits which combined interest in the sitter s physique with a fragmentation of the picture space inherited from Cubism and Constructivism During this period he painted portraits of foremost figures such as Leo Trotsky Annenkov spearheaded the resurgence of the World of Art group between 1922 and 1924 and was involved in establishing the Society of Easel Painters He worked as a stage designer for theatres in Moscow and Petrograd now Saint Petersburg and designed among other pageants the celebrations staged in 1920 to commemorate the 1917 Revolution in the streets of Petrograd and the re enactment of the storming of the Winter Palace which involved some seven thousand performers In 1924 he settled in Paris where he continued to work as a stage designer Search Advanced search Featured Products Catalogue of the
