    Title U S Year 1940 Author Arthur G Dove Title Blackbird Year 1942 Biography Listen Arthur Dove is regarded as the first American artist to create abstract works He was connected with Alfred Stieglitz and the circle of artists who promoted an artistic renewal in the United States From 1903 to 1907 Dove worked as an illustrator for various periodic publications such as Century and Life He travelled to Paris and the south of France where he was attracted by Fauvism and the work of Paul Cézanne and met some of the American artists then living in the French capital such as Patrick Henri Bruce and Max Weber After returning to New York in 1909 he met Stieglitz who became his friend and dealer and organised his first oneman show in 1912 Dove s work was frequently exhibited at the three galleries Stieglitz successively opened in New York during those years 291 Intimate Gallery and An American Place Dove moved to Westport in 1911 with the aim of earning a living as a farmer and illustrator He separated from his first wife in 1921 and lived in various houseboats and boats with Helen Torr also a painter until 1927 when he was forced by ill health to limit his stays on the boat to the summer months Dove s work from 1910 onwards was characterised by abstraction In it organic forms intermingled and were superimposed creating compositions that were notable for their movement and rhythm As his style developed these compositions became somewhat more leisurely in pace and more harmonious with a greater tendency towards geometry and two dimensionality Dove was interested in various media and was particularly keen on pastels at the end of the 1910s From 1921 to 1927 he practically abandoned painting in order to experiment with

    Jardin was probably born around 1622 as his age was given as about 50 in a document of 1672 It is sometimes assumed that his father was the painter Guillaum de Bardyn of Amsterdam although there is no confirmation for this Houbraken states that the artist studied with Claes Berchem His first dated painting is from 1646 formerly Cramer The Hague Du Jardin travelled from Amsterdam to Paris in 1650 as a merchant and reportedly married Suzanne van Royen in Lyon Du Jardin may have made an early trip to Italy around 1650 1652 but the evidence is unclear In any event he was back in Amsterdam by 1652 Three years later he moved to The Hague where he is listed as a member of the Confrerie Pictura in 1656 1658 By 1659 he had returned to Amsterdam where he is documented occasionally between 1670 and 1674 Ferdinand Bol portrayed the artist in 1658 although the painting is now known only through an 18th century drawing In 1653 he published a series of prints and continued to make etchings through the 1650s The following decade Du Jardin began to paint religious and history works with large figures In May 1672 Du Jardin along with several other Amsterdam artists was asked to appraise Italian pictures from the Reynst Collection In 1675 Du Jardin sailed to Italy with Jan Reynst probably stopping in Tangiers in October 1675 A painting in Antwerp Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten inv no 965 signed Roma 1675 initiated a period of renewed activity in landscape painting His nickname in Rome was Bokkebaert Goatee He died in Venice in 1678 A versatile artist Du Jardin painted religious and history paintings genre scenes animal pieces and portraits as well as Italianate landscapes Peter C Sutton Search Advanced search Featured

    it has been suggested that he was a pupil of Guido da Siena or of the Florentine master Cimabue The first documented reference to the artist dates from 1278 and refers to a series of minor works commissioned from the artist suggesting that he enjoyed a solid reputation by that date Duccio worked as a painter and miniaturist The first known work by his hand is the Rucellai Madonna of 1285 for the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence This panel Galleria degli Uffizi Florence depicts the Virgin in majesty seated on a throne with the Christ Child on her knee and surrounded by angels Its style and composition can be related to the work of Cimabue Other works attributed to Duccio include The Crevolli Madonna of 1280 Museo dell Opera del Duomo Siena and two triptychs of around 1300 National Gallery London and Museum of Fine Arts Boston Duccio s style is notable for the humanity and expressivity of the figures and for his innovative use of line and colour In 1308 he began work on his most ambitious project The Maestà an altarpiece painted on both sides for Siena cathedral Completed in 1311 its central motif was the Virgin and Child surrounded by angels and saints The front face has episodes from the life of the Virgin and angels on the pinnacles while at the lower front edge was a predella with scenes from the life of Christ alternating with figures of prophets On the back were twenty six episodes from the life of Christ and another nine on the predella This ambitious work which was installed in the Duomo with great pomp and ceremony was dismantled in the 18th century and its panels separated Some of them are now to be found in museums including the

    Raoul Dufy Title At the Races Year ca 1930 1935 Biography Listen Dufy was born in Le Havre in 1877 His interest in and disposition towards painting established themselves very soon At the age of eighteen he enrolled at the École des Beaux Arts of Le Havre where he met Othon Friesz Initially he was influenced by the artists of modernity Between 1895 and 1898 he painted landscapes and genre scenes at the style of Boudin Corot and Sisley In 1899 he moved to Paris and enrolled in the École Nationale des Beaux Arts There he attended Léon Bonnat s classes and concentrated on the study of Impressionist and post Impressionist artists Fame came for him at the beginning of the 20th century He exhibited works at the Salon des Artistes Français 1901 and at the Salon des Indépendants 1903 The year 1905 marked an initial turning point in his work He joined the fauvist movement constituted around Matisse He painted decked streets and many beach scenes His palette became brighter and his brushstroke freer In 1907 he abandoned Fauvism for the Cubist style He made friends with Picasso Derain and Léger In 1910 he made his first prints He illustrated many books notably Guillaume Apollinaire s famous Bestiaire or Cortège d Orphée before working with Poiret and Bianchini Ferrier a silk manufacturer of Lyon In 1919 in the aftermath of the war Dufy developed a more personal style characterised by more supple and energetic traits and brighter colours He also spent some time in the South of France and travelled around the Mediterranean He painted orchestras seascapes and race courses and enjoyed expressing joie de vivre and movement Dufy died in Forcalquier in 1953 leaving a considerable number of works about three thousand paintings six thousand watercolours four thousand

    Newark and following a five year apprenticeship moved to New York with his master in 1817 About 1818 he began to attend drawing classes at the American Academy of Fine Arts and soon became the most important engraver of the time In 1826 he was involved in establishing the Drawing Association of New York which later became the National Academy of Design of which he was director from 1845 to 1861 Although Durand began to execute portraits of prominent figures around 1830 his interest shifted to a different field following his trip to the Adirondacks and Lake Schroon with Thomas Cole in 1837 There he made a great number of sketches from life an area in which he was a pioneer Thenceforward he concentrated on landscape painting and became one of the staunchest advocates of this genre as the true source of inspiration of the American artist During the summer of 1840 Durand set off on what would be his only visit to Europe accompanied by his painter friends John F Kensett John Casilear and Thomas P Rossiter The tour which began in England also included France Germany Switzerland and Italy These travels left an important mark on his painting and he was especially influenced by the work of Claude Lorrain and John Constable On returning in 1841 he exhibited the paintings he had executed in Europe and resumed his trips to the Hudson River area Thomas Cole s early death in 1848 made Durand an even more important figure on the American art scene His reputation was further enhanced by the publication of his Letters on Landscape Painting from 1855 to 1856 in The Crayon an influential periodical partly edited by John Durand his son and first biographer In his letters Durand explained the fundaments of the Hudson River

    he made a short trip to Venice then opened his own workshop the following year During this period Dürer became associated with scholarly humanist circles in Nuremberg and established an enduring friendship with Willibald Pirckheimer This was the most productive period of his career when he produced major works such as the woodcut series of The Apocalypse 1498 and the paintings of The Adoration of the Magi of 1504 Galleria degli Uffizi Florence and the Paumgärtner Altarpiece of the same year Alte Pinakothek Munich Between 1505 and 1506 he made a second trip to Venice this time proceeded by his fame as a celebrated artist and met leading figures in the city s art world such as Giovanni Bellini In Venice Dürer painted The Madonna of the Rose Garlands Národní Galerie Prague and a significant group of watercolours He also focused on theoretical issues of proportion Dürer s experiences in Venice are recounted in his interesting letters to Pirckheimer In 1512 Maximilian I summoned the artist to produce various works including the design for a Triumphal Arch and Dürer continued to work for the Emperor until 1519 Dating from 1513 are his prints of The Knight Death and the Devil and Saint Jerome in his Study while the great print of Melencolia I dates from the following year In 1520 the artist travelled to the Countries with the aim of persuading the new Emperor Charles V to renew his pension His impressions of this trip are recorded in Dürer s comments and drawings in the first known artist s diary of this type Among the cities visited by Dürer where he was received with honours were Antwerp Brussels Bruges and Ghent On his return to Nuremberg he continued to execute prints and paintings including the painting of The Four Apostles
