  • Yellowfin in Focus
    the end of the caudal fin Beginning behind the eye a thin blue neon line runs along the top edge of the black stripe The lower half is a whitish color Fins true to their name are often yellow Figure 1 In spite of these consistencies in appearance individual Yellowfin Shiner coloration can be fairly variable The brownish upper third of their body may be of a sandy reddish greenish or yellowish nature that may be either of a light or dark hue The dark central stripe usually appears black but in certain lighting can take on a bluish cast The narrow neon ish stripe is larger and more yellow in some populations It also can vary with the lighting and may be more greenish or yellow The length of this electric stripe may also vary depending on light Figure 2 Breeding males develop very intense red hues that seem to radiate from the very depths of their bodies When colored up to their peak their stripes aren t even visible The fins of breeding males may be bright red or yellow Michael has even documented a Georgia population with very white fins and another that has so many melanophores on the fins rays that they appear to be grey Figure 3 Yellowfins are fond of smaller flowing waterways that feature rocky bottoms A personal observation is that they have an affinity for overhanging cover Brushy tree limbs overgrown riparian vegetation and other such objects that lie close to the water surface in a sunny spot are more likely to hold Yellowfins than adjacent sunny stream areas without overhang even when suitable submerged cover is present One thought is that they are looking for a quick meal hanging out where the terrestrial insects are most likely to fall into the water Similarly if a stream has overhanging cover on both banks but one side is shaded while the other bank is sunny the Yellowfins will be more numerous on the sunny side Any low hanging cover will be used Indeed my Matt first experience with these little beauties was in a tiny Athens Georgia area headwater with fellow NANFAns Michael Wolfe and Keith Hudgins A road construction runoff prevention tarp had ironically enough washed into the stream It managed to do so in a manner that left it floating on the surface in the sun Dozens of Yellowfins were residing underneath it Even though we found other N lutipinnis in this cover rich stream they definitely preferred the paradoxical shady spot in the sun Though this incident occurred in early February this pattern seems to hold for most of the year Only in the hottest of summer days do they seem to favor total shade Figures 4 and 5 Notropis lutipinnis is a summer spawner that appears to require the presence of another species of fish to reproduce successfully Bluehead Chubs Nocomis leptocephalus build stream bottom nests of pebbles upon which they reproduce Several other fish species spawn over Bluehead

  • The Gerald C. Corcoran Education Grant
    a convenient field guide for future naturalist course participants Unfortunately shortly after the grant was awarded the Mississippi River Field Institute was disbanded and the checklist was never completed 2009 James Moore of Henry County Stormwater Management Department GA was awarded 834 60 for purchasing a Native Stream biotype educational display This display will be used by Henry County Stormwater Management to educate the residents about non point source water pollution and its effects on local stream ecology The display will be maintained by James Moore Additionally this display will be setup at different sites in the area and NANFA brochures will be made available to the public near the display UNFORTUNATELY PROPOPSED PROJECT DID NOT COME TO FRUITION AND A FINAL REPORT WAS NOT SUBMITTED 2008 With the generous support of Maureen Corcoran NANFA doubled its 1000 commitment to its Gerald C Corcoran Education Grant program in 2008 Two proposals vied for the top spot But instead of letting one deserving proposal go unfunded Ms Corcoran daughter of the late Gerald C Corcoran the former NANFA president and environmental educator for whom the grant is named donated 1000 so that both proposals could get the support they needed The first place winning proposal is the San Felipe Creek Project submitted by Cassidy Mickelson of the Del Rio Council for the Arts in Del Rio TX This project aimed at students K 12 focuses on the ecological interactions between the federally threatened Devils River Minnow Dionda diaboli and the exotic Suckermouth Catfish Hypostomus cf plecostomus in the San Felipe Creek in Del Rio TX The project begins with field trips to the creek during which Suckermouth Catfish will be harvested from the creek while students watch from the bank learning about the invasive fish s negative impact on the ecosystem Students will also help take water quality measurements Over the next week students will put together displays about the creek to be shown at the San Felipe Creek Festival then throughout the school year traveling from school to school Total grant award is 920 The second place winning propsal is Wetlands as a Classroom submitted by Debbie Piscitelli of the Harpers Ferry Historical Association in Harpers Ferry VA This project is aimed at educating middle school students on the importance of wetlands to the health of the local regional and global ecosystems The project will take place on Harpers Ferry National Historical Park land at a newly restored nine acre patch of wetlands located at Nash Farms Curriculum content will be composed of five lesson plans each centered on hands on and feet wet activities collect samples from the wetlands and identifying the living creatures found collecting water samples and performing tests to determine water quality explore the soils of the wetland to learn about the importance of soil and the process of decomposition constructing mini boats using wetland material in order to demonstrate the significance of wetlands to humanity and learning about the native fishes in the region and

  • The NANFA Conservation Research Grant
    intraspecific relationships that can used for conservation efforts such as restocking extirpated populations and identifying particularly divergent and unique populations and provide insight into the geographic scales of diversification in the upper Tennessee River drainage 2008 In 2008 for the fifth year in a row NANFA has at least doubled its 1 000 annual commitment to the NANFA Conservation Research Grant program This year three grants were awarded bringing the grant funding total since the program began in 2001 to 13 850 The three Grant awardees are Richard Harrington a doctoral candidate at Yale University under the direction of Tom Near receives 1000 for his proposal Analysis of Genetic diversity and Hybridization in the Barrens Darter Etheostoma forbesi The Barrens Darter subgenus Catonotus currently has no state or federal agency status although it has an extremely restricted range in tributary streams to Barren Fork part of the Caney Fork River system in middle Tennessee With only nine known occurrences the species is highly vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances and hybridization with other darter species The two questions Richard wishes to address are Is the population genetic structure of E forbesi characteristic of a long term stable population size or is there evidence of reduced genetic diversity Is there hybridization between E forbesi and a closely related sympatric species Jacob Egge an assistant professor at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma Washington receives 825 for his proposal Conservation Genetics of the Least Madtom Noturus hildebrandi The Least Madtom from western Mississippi and Tennessee demonstrates unusual patterns of cryptic diversity given its distribution that are not consistent with current taxonomy Species diversity among madtoms is currently underestimated due to their conservative morphology N hildebrandi is closely related to the federally endangered Smoky Madtom N baileyi Further knowledge of the population structure of N hildebrandi will be useful in considering efforts to preserve diversity in both species One aspect of this proposal the review committee found attractive is the involvement of undergraduates as part of a summer project Ben Koch a doctoral student at the University of Wyoming receives 675 for his proposal Impacts of Non Native Trout on the Food Base in High Elevation Cutthroat Trout Refugia in Colorado This work will take place in the East River watershed where non native Brook Trout and Brown Trout have been introduced and the native Colorado River Cutthroat Trout has become rare Ben hopes to answer two questions Are these alpine streams serving as sink habitats for non native trouts due to a limited food base Are these alpine streams capable of supporting minimum viable populations of native cutthroat trout NANFA¹s grant will specifically support the rental of laboratory space at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory during field research 2007 In 2007 for the fourth year in a row NANFA has doubled its 1 000 annual commitment to the NANFA Conservation Research Grant program This year three grants were awarded Anna L George Tennessee Aquarium Research Institute Cohutta GA and David A Neely California Academy of Sciences San Francisco CA will receive 1 000 for their proposal Conservation Genetics and Larval Biology of Popeye Shiner a Rare Fish in a Fragmented Ecosystem The Popeye Shiner Notropis ariommus is an enigmatic minnow that is sporadically distributed across the greater Ohio River drainage It has been eliminated from much of its historic range including all populations north of the Ohio River and persists only as localized and highly fragmented populations in rivers with exceptional water quality Its decline is thought to be due to habitat degradation especially increased turbidity and reservoir construction and its near absence from collections for the 55 year period between 1894 and 1949 The researchers propose to examine 1 the spatial distribution of genetic variation in populations of the species from across its range 2 reproduction and larval ecology in captivity and 3 current status across their range Allison Pease Texas A M University College Station TX will receive 750 for her study Ecological Effects of an Introduced Cichlid in the Rio Panuco Basin The Convict Cichlid Archocentrus nigrofasciatus is a popular species in the aquarium hobby due largely to its hardiness and ease of breeding in captivity These traits also increase its chances of establishment outside of its native range in fact many established nonindigenous populations have been reported including a relatively recent introduction from an aquarium breeding facility in the Rio Panuco basin of east central Mexico In her study Pease will investigate how introduced A nigrofasciatus have affected native Herichthys cichlids focusing on competition for food and nesting resources Mike Sandel University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa Tuscaloosa AL will receive 500 to study Inbreeding Depression and Conservation Genetics of Spring Pygmy Sunfish Elassoma alabamae Questions to be investigated include Have reintroduced populations of E alabamae incurred inbreeding depression Is scoliosis in the species a defect associated with inbreeding depression reduced microsatellite heterozygosity or parasite infestation And is scoliosis associated with reduced reproductive potential or growth rate 2006 In 2006 for the third year in a row NANFA has doubled its 1 000 annual commitment to the NANFA Conservation Research Grant River Basin Coahuila Mexico with Particular Emphasis on the Rare and Endemic Rio Salado Darter Etheostoma segrex The Rio Salado flows through north central Mexico and historically drained the now isolated Cuatro Cienegas basin to the Río Grande Above the mouth of the Rio Sabinas this stream is known as the Rio Salado de los Nadadores and exists as a small to medium sized stream flowing through a fairly narrow valley Habitat here historically included many gentle riffles that were home to the endemic E segrex Although

    to the BOD on how to award the funds The grant committee will take nominations from NANFA members until January 31st of the award year and make a decision March 31st on how to award the grant In return NANFA requests public acknowledgement of the grant web banner t shirt logo etc and details on how the funds will be used for use in an article in American Currents John Bondhus 1997 Questions about the award may be addressed to Josh Blaylock Board Member and Kentucky Regional Representative Previous NANFA John Bondhus Grant Recipients 2015 NANFA inititated the John Bondhus Grant for the first time in 2015 and awarded it to Conservation Fisheries Inc Conservation Fisheries very much appreciates the money we were awarded from NANFA this past year This money will be used to help fund our efforts to get more kids in the creek We have received money to purchase some kid sized wetsuits some mask and snorkel gear and changing tents The NANFA money will be paired with other money received to help get this program off the ground We were able to get in one trip this year with kids in Little River Blount Co TN
