our fabulous dinner Posted in HomePost Special Events Special Interest Groups Leave a Comment 0 Letter read at 30th Anniversary Dinner Posted by sbaur on November 2 2014 One of the highlights of our 30th Anniversary Dinner was a letter read to the membership from Joanne Collins the Windsor High School teacher whose classroom received a gift of an iPad from NCMUG Here s that letter in case you missed it Lorene I regret that I will not be able to meet with the Mac Users Group this evening I have been out sick for the past 4 days and on returning to work today find that I am not up to par yet I would like you to please let the organization know what your donation has meant to our class Meeting you and having you donate an iPad to our classroom was an extraordinary event The item in and of itself has made a difference to my students I would however like to speak first about what I see as a much more valuable connection between the Mac Users Group and the students of K 10 Typically a classroom full of students with severe disabilities is like an island existing within the framework of a school We have different principals secretaries and support staff We mingle within the general education community as special people but we are rarely if ever thought of businesses and other community members when it comes to donations of equipment or funds or any other type of classroom support What was so different about your presentation to us is the relationship it has built You didn t just say Here is an iPad for you and then disappear back into the regular world You came to lunch You sat with the students of K 101 and the staff parents and I and enjoyed a lovely social event Typically students with significant disabilities don t get community members to sit down to lunch with them On top of that Lorene you maintained contact with us You can t imagine what that lovely gesture means to us My students need to develop relationships with people in the community It is often very difficult to do that because my students always present themselves as a large group who needs to have paid adults to Take care of them Thus the community sees my students as special people who need to always be in special areas What we need is for the community to see them as employable competent workers In my classroom you were able to see some of the things my students were able to accomplish with accommodations Now that we have the iPad we have an exceptional tool to encourage communication and open doors to the community Your donation of the money for us to purchase the speech program has opened up communication in the classroom and the community for some students who were more comfortable hanging in the background avoiding social interaction It gives

organization that fulfills the changing needs of the Mac Users community Just as computers have changed over the last 30 years and new devices have been developed many user groups have changed or disappeared Over the last few years you may not have realized some things that have happened to NCMUG Postage rates and printing costs increased and the paper newsletter went away No one wanted to edit an electronic newsletter and it went away Due to increasing costs and lack of volunteers to stage MCE it went away Since we were taking in less than 20 00 in raffle money some months and we were receiving very few vendor donations and still had to make monthly reports to the State of California the raffle went away Members were not buying books even at our discounted prices so book sales went away We should have as many as 15 on the Board of Directors and for the last two years despite requests for members to step up and join us we have been operating with 8 and we are approaching burn out Our memberships dropped by 70 from 384 to 314 in the last 16 months The total loss was even greater when the additional household or business names associated with a membership also went away To put this in perspective in January 2012 there were 462 memberships We have been averaging about 30 members at the regular meetings not enough to make it worthwhile for speakers to prepare presentations and travel long distances to come to our meetings Our biggest financial costs are for liability coverage and rent for space for general meetings and SIGS that are lightly attended The board participated in a day long retreat last Saturday 5 17 2014 and we had long and frank discussions on the condition of NCMUG and its future The results of the survey were gone over thoroughly In addition 11 General members had been interviewed before the retreat and 3 of those interviewed joined the board at the retreat on Saturday The members did not realize the depth and breadth of the group s challenges In many respects the situation is disheartening but there is still some interest and passion to keep the group going The next few months are going to be critical for the future of NCMUG We need the support of the members now as never before We are going to need help to focus on defining our goals and future direction We are inviting and encouraging members to join us for a very important and critical discussion regarding the desired future of NCMUG All members are invited to join us on Tuesday June 17 2014 from 6 8 30 pm at the Rohnert Park Senior Center where we hold our regular General Meeting We plan to continue looking at our challenges and need the participation of members to help us find a way for NCMUG to continue to be of value to our community We will
