  • Alive With Worship Remix #5: Bright City / Newday
I see myself as one of the guys trying to get the best out of everyone This is just one side of your music persona as you and your wife Sarah have also been putting music out under the title Climbing Club It s still early days but you ve already seen some good success on the first singles you ve put out what are your future plans for Climbing Club can we expect a full length Climbing Club has been a lot of fun and was intended as a project where we could enjoy music as a hobby and do whatever we wanted We ve been amazed by the reception and plan to make some music when we get some more time and money haha You ve also previously worked with Martin Smith of Delirious and still do what s it like working alongside such an experienced artist with such a vast discography you must have learnt some real gems from collaborating with him Martin has been and still is one of the people who has invested so much in to me and my wife Sarah I m so grateful to him for me giving me a chance to produce his solo records and play live with him I ve learnt so much from him He s taught me to invest in other people to give people chances to be generous to be grateful to have the best job in the world as he always says Martin is someone who always takes risks and I love that So with this Newday remix you ve done what was the initial inspiration did you have a clear idea from the start as to how it would sound or was it more experimentation This remix was a joint venture with producer Kevin Swartwood Kevin helped produce the Bright City album too He s a painter decorator by day and Ableton wizard by night We spent a few days collaborating and experimenting to achieve the final result Making music is always more fun with other people involved On that note how important do you think collaboration is between churches and musicians in seeing the creation of new and fresh music that resonates with thousands of people in and outside church Collaboration is vital We need each other We need to encourage each other and tell each other when things could be better Churches like Hillsong and Bethel are doing amazing things and making great music from just that the synergy between church and music There needs to be a lot of trust and release Do you think there is scope for more remixes and genre cross over to take place within church culture I don t know where the idea that church music has to have acoustic guitars and bad versions of Coldplay riffs comes from because the church should be at the forefront of creativity We have access to THE creator the one who made everything He s also made us unique

  • Interview with Simon Brading, Sam Cox and Jotham Oakley / Newday
that because you know the song is thriving and that s the end goal Sam Cox leading worship at Newday festival 2015 Whilst writing songs you must be thinking about how these will be taken by churches and adapted and played for their specific congregation and in their own sound does that affect the songwriting process at all Simon Brading We want to write songs for the local church and equip worship leaders with fresh new songs Some of our songs have been written from our local church in Brighton then spill out into Newday Some are written very much with Newday in mind then spill out into local churches There are some songs that will only get lead at Newday as there s a certain festival vibe you get with 7000 people in a tent that just won t work on a Sunday morning However the local church is totally in heart of our writing In the same way that the lyrics and chord sheets are given away so that church worship bands can play these songs do you see a similarity between that and the way that people are taking these remix stems and creating their own versions of the song Do you think this will become more important for the future of resourcing the church Simon Brading With the style of music we are writing and leading resourcing people with the specific sounds and stems will become more important for the future of resourcing the church The chord charts and lyrics are obviously essential but helping people recreate in the local church the sounds and tracks you ve spent hours on is a really good way to serve people Sam listening to these remixes what s it like hearing your voice taken out of it s initial context and surrounded in new sounds bringing a whole new experience to the song Sam Cox I ve so enjoyed hearing all the remixes particularly because lots of them have utilised the original vocal track to such creative effect chopping up the syllables messing around with pitch and really twisting and contorting the sound of my voice Very clever stuff After hearing how Alive With Worship has been adapted and remixed by all these producers do you think it could influence any future songwriting at all Simon Brading Yeah I think it may influence how we lead this song live There s a couple of killer chord changes that have stuck with me which I might start using Jotham Oakley Yeah I m the same Even though me and Simon wrote this song I ve never actually led it in a worship time When I m preparing to lead worship me and my band spend a lot of time rethinking the instrumentation of existing songs into an Electronic style I think because I ve been living with the song for so long now I ve found it hard to re arrange it into the style I lead in on Sundays

the inspiration because our approach to remixes is to listen to the stems and ask What story are these telling and how can we tell it differently So we re always trying to uphold the essence of the original song whilst at the same time totally reimagining it The great thing about creativity is that every producer will hear the stems in a different way and their ears will lead them in a unique direction and so instead of trying to achieve a particular style we essentially followed our instincts and took it from there What was it like having your faith spill into your work life on this project do you think it altered the way you approached the track Really good in the sense that working with a worship song isn t something that happens very often for us at work and so it was a new experience in that sense Hopefully the faith element didn t alter the way I approached it though because the goal whenever I sit down to write or produce regardless of the project or client is to try to do so as an expression of worship in the words of Chali 2na If you ain t giving God the praise then it s useless If you could produce a track for any singer rapper who would it be Frank Ocean How did you get started in the music production business We both started out in fairly similar ways just over slightly different timeframes Having studied music production degrees in Leeds we then worked various jobs to pay the bills whilst finding or creating opportunities to play or write music wherever we could and connecting with other musicians and creatives We ve both come to be working as full time composer producers through a combination of putting ourselves out there getting to know people and taking an interest in what they re doing asking for opportunities and then continuing to turn up until we were either paid or told to go away What would your advice be to young musicians out there wanting to pursue music as a career Basically as above Whatever it is that you re wanting to do in music do it a lot practice get experience however you can be reliable and see things through Particularly if you re writing or producing get good at being decisive getting tracks finished and getting them in front of people however awesome your ideas are if nobody hears them it s pretty much guaranteed that they won t earn you any money which is pretty key when you re trying to earn a living from them Don t sit on that awesome idea you ve had until that perfect moment comes along finish it get it out there and move on to the next thing because you can count on the fact that you ll write something even better in the future Whatever area of music you re working in you ll

  • Pete Coggan Heir Remix Alive with Worship / Newday
doing a second project together Working with Becky was an amazing experience she has such a gift at creating heartfelt piano pieces that move you as the listener so it was a real privilege working alongside her to create Years Heir is unique in that it actually evolves with each album by collaborating with a different artist I am currently thinking of who to collaborate with next but I know that I would want to continue to stretch myself musically and am excited to be unaware who how it sound How did you first start making music I first picked up a guitar after watching our lodger at the time playing it every day and it fascinated me I then joined a few bands at school playing electric guitar just enjoying music with friends What would your advice be to aspiring musicians how would you encourage them The biggest lesson I ve learnt and am still learning is to stop comparing myself to others it s a lose lose game We all have our own unique gifts and view of the world so sing produce create using that unique voice I found the best antidote to comparison is to celebrate to actively celebrate and promote others over yourself creates in you humility and peace The Father showed me a year back that He is lavish and has enough time attention love for ALL of his children so there is no room for competition within the family of God Celebrate others simple but tough to do but go for it and see how the Father changes your heart Where can people find your past catalogue of music You can find my debut solo EP Take Heart on iTunes Spotify it sounds better on iTunes Download the stems for Alive With Worship

music and a lot less willing to take on board other people s ideas Over the years I ve learned that letting someone else in on the creative process has so many huge rewards because other people have a different take and a different perspective and that s hugely valuable It can also be loads of fun I think the first two producers I ever collaborated with were Larry Holcombe aka GetToKnow back when he was known as Rebel Sonix and Don Heersema aka Kreecha Both of whom are really great producers and really lovely guys Working with each of them was what really taught me to love collaborations If you could work with anyone current or past who would it be Crumbs now you re asking That s a tough one obviously as a lover of music there s so many artists past and present who I really love and respect But gun to my head I think I d have to say Kraftwerk I m a huge huge Kraftwerk fan I d love to work with them just because I d love to see what their whole creative process was like Especially if I could go back in time to the mid 70s and work with the classic lineup Hütter Schneider Flür and Bartos They were notoriously secretive so just being with them in the studio seeing them work would be amazing Although you don t write lyrics or sing how does your faith affect the music you make Actually I do write lyrics and sing from time to time I sing on my song Fool and on my song Don t Wanna Leave Your Side My vocals are always heavily processed because I ve never been that confident about my singing ability But I m growing in confidence as a songwriter getting to collaborate with talented songwriters like Abi F Jones has definitely helped so I m keen to sing and write more lyrics in the future But to answer your question I think it affects my music in a number of ways Not always in a way which is obvious I m not writing congregational worship songs but all my music is informed by a Christian perspective I think that acknowledging and understanding that music and creativity is a precious gift from God definitely changes your whole approach Do you think more dance electronic elements should be brought into worship music I think they already are If you listen to most contemporary worship albums from the last couple of years I feel like keys and synths play a more prominent role than they used to And I suspect that s probably a direct result of the way EDM has become so huge everywhere in the last few years There s some great synths and arps in the original Alive With Worship for example I think it s great to bring in electronic elements if they serve the needs of the song I think DJs dance music
