    About Us Our mission and history The New England Wild Flower Society is the nation s oldest plant conservation organization and a recognized leader in native plant conservation horticulture and education Our mission is to conserve and promote the region s native plants to ensure healthy biologically diverse landscapes Life on Earth depends on plants Founded in 1900 as the Society for the Protection of Native Plants New England Wild Flower Society protects rare native plants through conservation research and seed banking The Society is based at Garden in the Woods a renowned native plant botanic garden in Framingham Massachusetts that attracts visitors from all over the world From this base 25 staff members and more than 700 volunteers work throughout New England to monitor and protect rare and endangered plants collect and preserve seeds to ensure biological diversity detect and control invasive species conduct research and offer a variety of educational programs The Society also operates a native plant nursery at Nasami Farm in western Massachusetts and owns seven native plant sanctuaries in Maine Massachusetts New Hampshire and Vermont that are open to the public The Society s vital work to conserve native plants and their habitats depends on

  • Invasive Plant Atlas of New England — New England Wild Flower Society
    States Department of Agriculture awarded a grant to the New England Wild Flower Society the University of Connecticut and the Silvio O Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge to track the distribution and spread of over 100 invasive plant species throughout New England The Society s role was to identify recruit train and coordinate 450 volunteers Volunteers collected information that became part of the Invasive Plant Atlas of New England IPANE at the University of Connecticut The data in IPANE will appear on the Internet for use in early detection of problem species research and to aid in decision making on how to control invasive species slow their spread and reduce their impact on our native flora The Invasive Plant Atlas of New England is a web accessible atlas of invasive plant species for the New England area The atlas will support early detection and rapid response of invasive plant species Included in the Atlas are images of and descriptive data about invasive plants and a collection database documenting the existence and spread of those species in the New England area Additionally maps and other GIS data for current plant distribution and chronological changes are planned The Atlas is intended
