    hint at the wonders below so the crust of the earth is merely the borderland of a vast underworld teeming with life This underappreciated and little known realm is one of the richest habitats on the planet home to millions of species and is integral to regulating the planet s biosphere Because it is difficult for us to penetrate with our eyes as well as our tools it is not well understood How strange that one of the least known places of all is the one that we walk on top of every day This selection of landscape photographs features artists who have pointed their cameras at an unfamiliar and unsung place the ground Instead of sharing a vista or a view they chose to look downward at the astonishing contours of a dark and dense universe that we may never know more than skin deep Includes work by Richard Baron William Clift Rick Dingus Lee Friedlander Mary Peck Eliot Porter Meridel Rubenstein David Scheinbaum Aaron Siskind and Frederick Sommer Images from the Exhibition Gallup New Mexico from the series Still Lives New Mexico 2013 Pigment print courtesy of the artist Richard Baron Gallup New Mexico from the series Still

    sun Areas of the paper exposed to light changed color creating an outline around the area of paper covered by the object Today this very basic form of photography is commonly known as a sun print and in the art world as a photogram This technique has been revised and revisited by artists who are attracted to its directness as well as its challenge to the artistic traditions of representation and storytelling One of its pleasures is the contradiction between the necessary realism of a picture created using materials from our physical world and the abstract or non narrative picture that often results Most photograms are not pictures of something even when you can identify what was used to make them a leaf a compact disk Often they are not even about something They are pictures to enjoy on their own terms This group exhibition includes more than two dozen cameraless photographs by Caleb Charland Susannah Hays Leigh Anne Langwell David Ondrik Carol Panaro Smith and James Hajicek and Norman Sarachek A fascinating group of images of explosions in the desert are featured in an installation of work by Phoenix artist Christopher Colville titled Works of Fire Another unusual installation is Wait and See by Swiss artists Françoise and Daniel Cartier in which expired photo paper is hung on the wall and exposed over the course of the exhibition In the photographs in this exhibition all made without a camera a lens or a scanner each artist takes us on a visual journey to a place where our visual knowledge of the world is of little assistance With their inventive use of materials they invite us to encounter something we have never before seen and to question our idea of what a photograph can be Images from the Exhibition Shadow

    from a Dark Room 1 9 15 4 19 15 Photography used to be synonymous with the darkroom where negatives were developed in a light tight space with running water sloshing chemicals and the glow of a red safe light While many photographers were happy to give up this environment in the switch to digital printing others continue to prefer the special alchemy of the darkroom The pictures on view here are all made with objects common to a traditional wet process darkroom and stand as tributes to its particular rituals and ambience Alongside the shift away from darkroom printing is the change in how people view images The word photography writing with light was chosen in 1839 by British scientist and scholar Sir John Herschel to describe his discovery that sodium thiosulfate could be used as a photographic fixer to preserve images on a surface Until recently a photograph was almost always a physical object you could hold in your hand Today most photographs are viewed primarily on a lighted screen a computer or phone and are stored electronically as a series of numbers In recent years artists have been responding to this seismic shift some by embracing the exciting new possibilities and some by memorializing or reactivating darkroom printing and historic photographic processes Includes work by Brian Buckley John Cyr Aspen Mays and Robert Stivers Images from the Exhibition Sally Mann s Developer Tray 2011 Pigment print Courtesy of the artist and Catherine Edelman Gallery John Cyr Sally Mann s Developer Tray 2011 Pigment print Courtesy of the artist and Catherine Edelman Gallery Eight Lens Composite 2005 Polaroid Type 809 print unique photogram Courtesy of the artist Brian Buckley Eight Lens Composite 2005 Polaroid Type 809 print unique photogram Courtesy of the artist Artists Joan Myers 3 17

    and ashen ground In Fire Frazzle we see a portrait of a towering individual tree destroyed by fire Despite the sobering subject matter Metcalf finds unexpected beauty in the burned trees Galagan s series The Green Fuse also addresses the inescapable destruction of the fire ravaged landscape but emphasizes fire s role in the regeneration of the forest ecosystem The pieces in the show range from Tiny River of Green in which the artist highlights a small area of regrowth among the dead trees to August s Garden in which a massive fallen trunk is cradled in the grasses and wildflowers nourished by the burn The images Galagan writes remind us that the most essential task of a forest in our hotter drier world is to survive Jane Fulton Alt s series The Burn began in an eventful year in which her first grandchild was born her sister was diagnosed with cancer and she witnessed a controlled prairie fire in the area bordering Chicago Struck by the expressive possibilities of the fire at this turbulent time in her life Alt spent the next six years working amidst the heat and smoke of controlled burns in Lake Forest Illinois attempting to capture the ephemeral moment when life and death are not opposed but are harmonized as a single process In Burn No 93 and Burn No 55 she uses the subtleties of shifting smoke as visual manifestations of her own disorientation lucidity and emotional fluidity using the external landscapes to reflect inner states Larry Schwarm a native of Kansas now based in Wichita has been photographing prairie fires in vivid color for several decades Printed large and often appearing as fields of intense color Schwarm s pictures convey the scale and force of prairie fires along with their terrible beauty The

    variety of techniques from 1974 to 1990 Myers sometimes used paper negatives instead of film negatives taking advantage of the texture of the paper to soften her subject matter She also made prints using the platinum palladium process in which the photographic image is in more direct contact with the paper To augment these prints she often added touches of watercolor or pastel by hand to create the effects she wanted When digital photography came along the artist saw it as another tool for creative expression and since 2001 she has been working primarily with digital photography and pigment printing Over the years as Myers has continued to travel the world with her camera she has been increasingly drawn to big picture views and the size of her prints has also gotten larger another advantage of digital printing In pursuing the theme of human interventions in the landscape Myers has followed the Santa Fe Trail from Missouri to New Mexico photographed remnants of World War II relocation camps recorded the submerged structures in California s Salton Sea traveled the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and traced the footsteps of photographer Russell Lee in Pie Town New Mexico Myers has also made several trips to Antarctica one a four month artist residency where she produced one of her most acclaimed series Wondrous Cold An Antarctic Journey More recently she has photographed in the jungles of India She is now nearing completion on a body of work that centers on volcanic and geothermal sites around the globe Her newest work on view here for the first time examines the identity of the Southwest as expressed in outdoor advertising and signage Images from the Exhibition Guadalupe New Mexico Coca Cola Sign 2013 Pigment print Courtesy of the artist Joan Myers Guadalupe

    of the Maya 1974 and Monuments of the Incas 1982 Ranney sees the two series as important comparative projects that reveal the interdependence of cultural and natural landscapes Accordingly the selections from the two bodies of work are here presented side by side to illuminate the differing approaches and environments of these sophisticated cultures As Ranney was completing work on his project Monuments of the Incas in 1979 he started a new undertaking on a mesa near Las Vegas New Mexico The site was selected by artist Charles Ross as the location for Star Axis an ambitious construction that is part architecture part sculpture part earthwork and a naked eye celestial observatory Sensing a connection between the two projects Ranney came to think of Star Axis as a ruin in reverse an extension of the idea of archeology At Ross invitation he has photographed at the site for more than three decades from the initial groundbreaking up to the present as it nears completion The photographs offer a portrait of the site in disarray as it slowly moves toward realization commenting on the human drive to create in the face of our own mortality Since 1985 Ranney s visual survey of ancient sites from New Mexico to South America has been focused on the coastal deserts of Peru and Chile including photographs of their monumental geoglyphs large scale marks made by humans on the landscape These lines and shapes made by clearing the desert s dark surface rock and sand are sometimes delineated with stones and often run significant distances Thought now to be oriented principally toward sacred peaks and sources of water they are believed to be sites of important ceremonial activity Born in Chicago in 1942 Edward Ranney has lived in New Mexico since 1970 raising a family
