  • New Mexico Museum of Art - The Surreal Life
    and Marco Rosichelli who share a desire to create alternative universes both familiar and strange The Surreal Life opens at the New Mexico Museum of Art on September 25 2009 Snyder and Rosichelli present in their art extremely well known elements Snyder s beautifully crafted paintings with their Renaissance inspired backdrops and Rosichelli s finely crafted playground toys However they juxtapose these artistic elements with surreal content Snyder with amorphous balloon like cartoon shapes and Rosichelli with fetus like forms Rosichelli s sculptures evoke common objects reminiscent of childhood icons and toys He says the viewers are enticed to interact with the work The figures in Snyder s paintings have an unruly organic quality that suggests Darwinian principles run amok they can t stop growing extra breasts yet lack basic necessities like arms or mouths We are asked to consider the anthropomorphic forms represented in both artists work either through our subconscious dream fueled mind or as literal symbols Is the Rosichelli sculpture in the exhibition Spring Fetus 2 the realization of some dream gone bad or more literally a hobby horse common to children s playgrounds Is Snyder asking us to look at the forms in his paintings as if through a window or is the canvas a mirror Exhibition curator Tim Rodgers Ph D said that he hopes the viewer will find such art inspiring in that it opens up new possibilities and alternative worlds Snyder earned his B F A from the University of Oregon and his M A in Art and Media at New York University Snyder lives in New Mexico His work has been exhibited internationally and is in the Whitney and DeYoung Museums permanent collections Rosichelli received his B F A in sculpture and design from Southern Oregon University in Ashland Oregon He recently

    IAIA Con Cariño Artists Inspired by Lowriders Online Exhibitions Focus on Photography Alcove 12 0 The Museum s Collection How the West is One Art on the Edge 2013 Art on the Edge 2010 Alternative Spaces 100 Years of the MNM Pulling Strings Art on the Edge 2008 The Show IDEA Photographic Looking Back Interactions Past Exhibitions Past Exhibitions 2002 to 2008 Past Exhibitions 2009 Past Exhibitions 2010 Past Exhibitions 2011 Past Exhibitions 2012 Past Exhibitions 2013 Past Exhibitions 2014 Past Exhibitions 2015 Share Exhibitions Past Exhibitions Past Exhibitions 2009 Gustave Baumann On display Sep 25 2009 Apr 3 2010 A long term exhibition at the Museum of Art highlights Baumann s many talents featuring some of his more obscure yet beautiful work Gustave Baumann A Santa Fe Legend runs indefinitely beginning September 25 2009 in the Women s Board Room Born in Germany in 1881 Baumann eventually settled down in Santa Fe taking inspiration from the New Mexican countryside for many of his woodblock prints In 1931 he began carving his little people marionettes that he toured around the state for many years Baumann s legacy lives on today through replicas of his loveable little people who entertain young and old alike at the Museum of Fine Arts annual Christmas festivity A highly prolific artist Baumann carved more than sixty five marionettes during his lifetime His marionette self portrait as well as marionette representations of his daughter and actress wife Jane Devereaux Henderson will be featured in the exhibition More images of these and other marionettes including his camera toting Tourist can be viewed in the museum s e Gallery of Pulling Strings Baumann began his wood cut prints by making gouache paintings of a local scene These opaque watercolor paintings relied on flat planes of color and were

    Exhibitions 2010 Past Exhibitions 2011 Past Exhibitions 2012 Past Exhibitions 2013 Past Exhibitions 2014 Past Exhibitions 2015 Share Exhibitions Past Exhibitions Past Exhibitions 2009 Intertwined On display April 24 2009 September 6 2009 Intertwined and its accompanying catalog will provide an international look at contemporary basket making and its current level of innovation and experimentation The baskets in their collection utilize a range of materials and techniques from traditional organic to commercial and often surprising media Represented artists include the well known international to the regional four from Santa Fe and they work in both functional containers as well as closed sculptural forms Intertwined will include more than 70 traditional and non traditional baskets including works by some of the major figures in contemporary basket making Ed Rossbach Katherine Westphal Sally Black Kiyomi Iwata Kazuaki Honma Dorothy Gill Barnes Carol Eckert John McQueen Elsie Holiday Ferne Jacobs Norma Minkowitz Fran Reed Lisa Telford John Garrett Kay Kahn and many more Both Garrett and Kahn are New Mexico artists This exhibition demonstrates how basketry has been redefined during the past four decades says Laura Addison Curator of Contemporary Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art and local curator for this exhibition She goes on to say Many of the works in Intertwined are unrecognizable as baskets rather they are sculptures that employ traditional and nontraditional basketmaking techniques and materials The Liebermans collection is exceptional in its quality and breadth Included are works primarily from the United States including Native American basketry but also from Japan and Great Britain The contemporary baskets of Intertwined are another sub category of crafts that the Museum has been showing in recent years including this summer s exhibition Flux Reflections on Contemporary Glass and several exhibitions on ceramics over the past decade Intertwined is curated

    Portraits from the Collection Finding a Contemporary Voice the Legacy of Lloyd Kiva New and IAIA Con Cariño Artists Inspired by Lowriders Online Exhibitions Focus on Photography Alcove 12 0 The Museum s Collection How the West is One Art on the Edge 2013 Art on the Edge 2010 Alternative Spaces 100 Years of the MNM Pulling Strings Art on the Edge 2008 The Show IDEA Photographic Looking Back Interactions Past Exhibitions Past Exhibitions 2002 to 2008 Past Exhibitions 2009 Past Exhibitions 2010 Past Exhibitions 2011 Past Exhibitions 2012 Past Exhibitions 2013 Past Exhibitions 2014 Past Exhibitions 2015 Share Exhibitions Past Exhibitions Past Exhibitions 2009 Pulling Strings On display Jan 30 2009 May 10 2009 More than sixty marionettes carved by Gustave Baumann will be on view in this first ever large scale exhibition featuring recreated stages with posed marionettes hand made props and Baumann painted backdrops Donated to the Museum in 1973 by his wife Jane Baumann the marionettes props and other stage material have been used in Christmas productions since 1935 Originally intended to amuse their daughter Anne in their home the marionettes quickly became well known in the Santa Fe community and performances were soon offered annually in St Francis auditorium in the Museum Although the marionettes are much loved in Santa Fe there has never been a complete display of them in theatrical settings To recreate the experience of viewing the marionettes on stage an audiotape will accompany the exhibition and give viewers the opportunity to hear actors perform sections of the scripts written by Gustave Baumann and his associates In addition to the staged marionettes the exhibition will present prints and paintings by Baumann that are part of the Museum s collection of over 2 000 works by the artist Baumann s works produced in
