    display Jan 7 2011 Apr 8 2011 Motels and Motion on the Mother Road New Mexico To Begin a People s Survey of Route 66 Motels and Motion on the Mother Road New Mexico To Begin a People s Survey of Route 66 in the Governor s Gallery marks the start of a large scale community project spearheaded by artist Robin Ward Assistant Professor of Art at the University of New Mexico The project will push the boundaries of how a community might experience and steward an endangered history through creative expressions Running through New Mexico on its way from Chicago Illinois to Los Angeles California the popularity of Route 66 contributed to the growth of businesses and communities across the United States as restaurants motor courts and roadside attractions sprang up along the highway This unique piece of American culture has been and continues to be a witness and participant to decades of American history Artists take inspiration from many places and the Mother Road had been immortalized in literature song film television and by international aficionados who visit and document it in unique and unexpected ways This exhibition includes work by artists Ellen Babcock Beau Carey Eric Cousineau Steve Fitch and Eila Kovanen Each of these artists takes a different approach to their source material Ellen Babcock s Orphan Sign Project brings new life and purpose to abandoned signage on Albuquerque s Central Avenue Beau Carey paints the landscape between populated areas on the route depicting the subtle atmospheric conditions of the wide open vistas Eric Cousineau hints at the people who pass through towns as he photographs details of hotel and motel interiors Steve Fitch combines decades of his photographic documentation of historic motel signs to create striking images that are also small archives Eila Kovanen s
